Bhabha Atomic Research Centre

Summer Training opportunities for Science and Engineering graduate/ postgraduate students

Bhabha Atomic Research Centre being a multidisciplinary organization and a national laboratory with the

prime motive to support the nuclear programme in the country, extends its expertise to provide great

opportunities for research and impart training to students/fellows from academic institutions in order to

encourage the growth of scientific/technological research in the country.

Eligibility

Bonafide students in the third or fourth year of under-graduate engineering programme and science

students in post graduate programmes may apply for undertaking project work/training, as a part of their

academic curriculum, in various engineering disciplines (namely Mechanical, Chemical, Electrical,

Electronics, Instrumentation, Computer) and basic sciences (namely physics, chemistry, biology) for

duration not less than three months. Such opportunities are provided to students on an on-availability

basis.

No accommodation is offered in the barc training school hostel or guest house to any student

selected for undertaking summer project.

Applications have to be submitted through their respective academic institution indicating the personal

details of the student including his/her academic record, year of study, discipline, duration of project. The

Radio Astronomy Centre, Ooty

Pulsar Observatory for Students (POS)

The program consists of two stages. The first part involves a two day workshop, to be

held at the Radio Astronomy Centre (RAC), Ooty, Tamil Nadu during June .

It will have lectures on the basics of Radio and Pulsar Astronomy (both theoretical and observational

aspects), future prospects and excitements in the field and hands on experiments, relevant for observing

pulsars with a radio telescope.

The second stage involves live Ooty Radio Telescope (ORT) observations of certain selected Pulsars by

the workshop participants. The second stage will be pursued by four batches of you during various

academic breaks between June and December. This is mainly because the ORT is usually subscribed

for other science goals so live Pulsar observations by all the workshop participants at one epoch will not

be very educative. Therefore, we have created four slots during which four batches of participants can

use the ORT for Pulsar observations.

It is expected that each batch will contain around 6-8 workshop participants and these slots selected keeping in mind your various academic breaks.

Saha Institute of Nuclear Physics (SINP), Kolkata

One-Year Post- M.Sc. Associateship Course

The Post-M.Sc. Associateship Course in Physics was launched in 1953 at Professor M N Saha's initiative.

The purpose then was to train bright and strongly motivated young students with a Master's Degree in

Physics from Indian Universities for high quality education and research in Nuclear Science.

The scope of the Course was later widened to embrace other areas of physical sciences. The duration of

the Course, 9 months in the beginning, was soon extended to a full year.

Recently UGC has made such a course work before initiating research for Ph.D. a mandatory. In 1973 a

similar course was also introduced in Biophysical Sciences.

The Courses in the two streams (Physcs/Biology) equip students for the Ph.D. Programme through

classroom lectures at basic and advanced levels, laboratory sessions and exposure to computers.

Those admitted into the Course are designated as Junior Research Fellows (JRF) of the Institute and

enjoy stipends of Rs 12,000/- per month for the first two years and Rs 14,000/- per month thereafter.

Personal medical reimbursements are also available according to the CS(MA) Rules. House Rent

Allowance (HRA) is given at 30% of fellowship extra if hostel accommodation is not needed, or not

available. An annual book grant of Rs. 3000/- is also available after the first year.

Successful completion of the Course leads to the award of a Diploma called "Associate of Saha Institute

of Nuclear Physics" and qualifies a student for joining a research group in the Institute.

The session normally starts in August, entailing three terms. The first term (August-December) deals with

basics and the second (January-April) with Advanced topics. Both terms include laboratory work. The

third term (May-August) is devoted to Review/Project work by the students on topics which may be

pursued in their research career.
