Last Sunday night was a wonderful time of worship, Bible study, and prayer. We had a special commissioning prayer time for all our students and adults going on the Seattle Mission Trip. They will be leaving this Saturday morning, and I would encourage you to pray for them. Pray for safety as they travel. Pray as they sing and serve in Seattle. Pray also that they would have opportunities to share the gospel and that people would respond. This upcoming Sunday, we will also have a special prayer time for our other summer missionaries. I’m so thankful to be a part of a healthy church that desires to take the gospel to the ends of the earth. If you are on track with us, we are working through Week 22 in the read-ing plan. This is the first time that we will move from the narrative stories in Genesis through Esther and see the perspective of the prophets. The prophets are set in the same time period as 1 and 2 Kings, but they are written from the perspective of the prophet and not King David, King Solomon, or another narrative writer. The prophetic literature is more poetic and figurative than the narratives, but have similar themes; God is sovereign, humanity is sinful and rebellious, and God desires our obedience and worship. I don’t have space to discuss all four of this week’s prophets, but I do want to explain at least the first three days of reading so you’ll have an idea of how to navigate through the prophetic readings. The first two days, you’ll read about Jonah, the reluctant prophet. God wanted him to preach repentance to the wicked people of Nineveh. Despising the Nine-vites, Jonah decided to flee to Tarshish instead. After God threw him from the boat, and after spending three days inside a large fish, Jonah went to Nineveh and preached and the people repented. This only made Jonah more upset. Even though we may not consider everyone worthy of salvation, God does. The next day, you’ll read about Hosea, the redeeming prophet. God asked Hosea, a faithful man, to marry a prostitute named Gomer. After they were married, and even after having three children together, Gomer left Hosea to return to the world of prostitution. After some time had passed, God commanded Hosea to go and buy her back from the auction block. Hosea did as the Lord commanded. All of this was a picture of Israel’s relationship with God. He chose and loved Israel, but Israel committed spiritual adultery against God by worshipping other gods. Yet out of His unfailing love, God continued to pursue Israel despite their rebellious ways. This Sunday, I’ll be preaching from 1 Kings 18, which is one of my favorite Old Testament stories. It features the prophet Elijah engaged in a supernatural battle against the prophets of Baal. I know it’s a holiday weekend, but I really hope to see you here Sunday. Keep going in the reading plan and have a blessed week! In Christ, Jason

A Message from Carter’s Corner This week in the life of our youth, the 2017 Youth Choir Mission Trip begins! We are headed out to Seattle, Washing-ton on Saturday at 4:00 a.m. This will be a week-long trip and we will return back home on the following Saturday. This year our students will be doing many yard clean-up projects, as well as, serving in local food banks, and many concerts. Our students are excited about the opportunity to serve in Seattle and the surrounding areas. We are so thankful that our church is sending students and adults out all across the United States to share God’s Word. We ask that you pray in the coming days for the people of Seattle as we minister to them and serve the people just as Christ did. Please pray for our students and adults as we travel to Seattle that God would provide His hand of protec-tion. Also, continue to pray for the leaders in Seattle as we make the final plans of the details of this trip. Thank you so much for your constant support, prayers, and love for our students at First Baptist Church. You are truly making a difference in the lives of not only our students, but a difference around the world. ▪Act Justly ▪Love Mercy ▪Walk Humbly
