Opportunities Within Our Churches A Word from the Executive Director of Missions by Dr. Mitch Martin, Executive Director of Missions I agree with Dr. Chuck Herring, “For the last few years the C2M Conference has been well planned, highly relevant, and effective. From the main event with Vance Pitman speaking to the breakout sessions, this year was off-the-charts.” Thank you Dr. Jim Collier, Casey Pearson and everyone else at Kirby Woods for hosting us. It was an awesome night. Those who receive our digital newsletters have already seen some of the photos and video highlights of C2M. Are you getting our emails? We send out about a dozen newsletters a year, half paper and half digital. To subscribe to our e-mail newsletters, contact [email protected]. If you have never been to the Southern Baptist Convention, this is a good year to start. First, it will be in St. Louis, which is so very close and convenient. Second, one of our own, Dr. Steve Gaines will be nominated as President of the Southern Baptist Convention. On Monday May 2, at the Ministers’ Conference at Bellevue, Brother Steve will share his thoughts about the SBC and why he is willing to be nominated. Call the association office at 901-373-6161 and let us know you are coming to lunch, or call us if you need help registering messengers or finding transportation to St. Louis on June 14. I believe this will be a historic convention. I’m looking forward to it and hope to see many of you there. On May 5, we are going to have our first Pastors and Wives Fellowship. This event will be hosted by Robert West at Kingdom Center Ministries, (2210 Charjean Rd.) beginning at 6:00 p.m., and it is primarily intended for those who serve in the south and west regions but is open to all MSBA pastors who pre-register by May 2. In months to come, we hope to have similar gatherings for pastors and wives in the north and east regions and inside the loop. To stand strong, we must stand together. Participants came from nine states and a couple came from Venezuela. Over 50 participants were registered to learn how their churches could become involved or continue on mission to the ends of the earth. Training was offered in narrating the Bible, adopting unreached people groups, church planting (four fields), prayer walking and several other areas. From the group that attended, there are more than 12 international mission trips planned to go and plant a witness to an unreached people group. For 10 years, Enlace Global has been held at the International Learning Center in Richmond, VA. This is the first time Enlace Global has occurred outside of Richmond. It served as a healthy prototype for the future as Enlace Global expands its impact and influence regionally in other parts of the United States. Lucy Baptist Church formed in September, 1870 in the township of Lucy, TN. The church first met at the “town hall” and later in 1875, an a-frame building was built under an oak tree on the property where the church stands today. Baptisms in the early days were held in the Loosahatchie River on Raleigh-Millington Rd. The church has come a long way in 146 years. Pastor David Lawrence and his family began serving at Lucy in July, 2005. Bro. David was born and grew up in Leeds, AL, outside of Birmingham. He went on to graduate from Mobile College and earned his Masters Degree from Mid-America Baptist Theological Seminary. Bro. David is married to Karen, who serves as an administrative assistant at Ellendale Baptist Church in Bartlett. They have three grown, married sons: Jonathan (Bemarie), Jared (Carlye) and Joel (Natalie) and one grandson, Micah. (Pictures of the grandson are available upon request.) Before coming to Lucy Baptist, Bro. David served as an associate pastor at Sage Ave. Baptist Church in Mobile and lead pastor at several churches in Alabama and Tennessee. Over the years, the neighborhood around Lucy Baptist has transformed to be primarily Hispanic. The church has held Bible studies, family movie nights, sports camps and children’s Bible clubs to share the gospel and reach their community. They currently have four community groups that meet in members’ homes and one group that meets at the church campus every Sunday night. Each fifth Sunday, all the groups join together for a night of worship that includes music, scripture reading, testimony and prayer. They also have men’s and women’s disciple-making groups that meet throughout the week. During the Sunday School hour, they offer a growth track that focuses on spiritual disciplines that encourage Christian growth in the members. Church members are actively involved in mission opportunities both locally and around the world. They have recently had teams serving in Indonesia, Nicaragua and Costa Rica. The church is living out the three-fold mission they feel God has called them to: Love God, Love People and Make Disciples in Congregation, Family, Community and World. When the opportunity arose to become one of this year’s Focus Churches, Bro. David was excited to get to participate. He enjoys the opportunity for fellowship with local pastors that he doesn’t otherwise get to spend time with and the relationships that have formed and will hopefully continue. He was also attracted to the Biblical and practical way Dr. Mitch Martin and Dr. David Leavell have organized the seven metrics of a strong church around Acts 11. He feels the guest speakers and strong leaders have done a great job equipping this year’s participants and that he has benefitted from the practical projects that he was challenged to put in practice in his own church. He highly recommends being a focus church to anyone considering it when the opportunity arises. Looking to the future, Bro. David is leading a Membership Matters Ministry that he hopes will lead the church toward more biblical church membership. They are also praying for an open door to partner and plant a church, hopefully in the Hispanic community. He covets your prayers as Lucy Baptist seeks to honor, obey and serve Christ in the power of the Holy Spirit and that they will be a healthy, Christ-exalting, world-impacting, disiple making church.

Volunteers Needed to Provide Lunches for Mission TeamsEvery year, mission teams come to Memphis to work at Brinkley Heights Ministries through their Street Reach program. These teams do Backyard Bible Clubs at 8-12 sites in the Jackson/Macon area of the inner city in the mornings and then participate in other mission work in the afternoons such as cutting yards, sports clinics and visiting nursing homes. The mission teams are making a tremendous difference in the lives of inner-city children by showing the love of Jesus! For many years, area churches have provided lunch for these mission teams. A simple sandwich, chips, fruit, dessert, drink and paper products are needed. Would your church or mission group provide lunch for one or more days?

The dates and team sizes are :June 6-10 (169) June 13-17 (133)June 20-24 (182) July 4-8 (120)July 11-15 (180) July 18-22 (184) July 25-29 (150) August 1-5 (45)
