In The Hayesbrook Art department we aim to provide students with a wide and diverse curriculum experience.

Students in year 7 start advanced printing techniques that other schools only begin to provide at the end of ks3 or at GCSE level. We firmly believe that by providing boys with a wide range of creative opportunities that they will find an area that they can excel at. We often hear the phrase ‘I can’t draw so I’m no good at Art!” this is a myth that we aim to dispel quickly! Artistic talent comes in many forms and all students by the time they reach the end of their KS3 journey will have found an area that they thoroughly enjoy and have mastered.

Whilst we offer a packed curriculum currently, it is our aim to start using our links with other Trust schools throughout the year to develop opportunities in the field of Photography. Our intention is to do this initially through our Enrichment programme and then interleave it into our KS3 and KS4 curriculums.

Art is an incredibly important aspect of a student’s developing mind and, whilst we watch our year 9 students every year take options to lead them onto the next steps in their education, creative or otherwise; we know that the Art department have allowed them to develop key skills such as Critical thinking, problem solving, reflection, communication, resilience, self-direction, collaboration, risk taking, creative thinking and imagination.

As a department our aim is to inspire students to value the relevance of literary arts and to understand the opportunities that are opened through communicating effectively. In a nutshell we want our boys to love reading, be confident in challenging opinions and in discussing the world around them.

I am proud to lead a department of highly experienced teachers who have a wealth of subject knowledge but more importantly of how our subject can enrich the lives of our students.

Our KS3 curriculum has been designed to support and challenge students, thus preparing them for the rigours of GCSE. From the start, boys discover 19th century fiction, poetry and Shakespeare. We use the rehearsal room approach allowing students to experience the plays as intended whilst removing the fear of the language.

One of the highlights of the week is our 200 word challenge, which not only allows students the opportunity to express their creativity but provides them with the resilience to write accurately, eloquently and at length on many topical issues.

Each year, your son will also study a media unit which hones their skills of analysis and further allows them to connect to their own world.

Fortnightly visits to the Library develops vocabulary, questioning skills, analysis and access to the thoughts and feelings of great writers.

No boy is left behind – there is no wrong answer in English, it’s about building the confidence to believe what you are saying is valued. I really like English lessons

Hello and welcome to Technology! This is a subject that is purposeful as well as exciting. You will learn invaluable skills in designing, analysing and evaluating, and of course get the chance to make your designs a reality.

You will get to work with a wide range of materials including acrylic, paper and a variety of woods while learning how to shape and finish these to a high standard. In Food Technology we start off with the basics such as knife skills, and by the end of Year 7 you will be able to use the hob, oven and grill with success to make dishes such as chicken chow mein, muffins, pasta salad and many other dishes that allow you to be creative with ingredients.

ICT also plays a part in our curriculum, and students really enjoy using the laser cutter to engrave their pencil case with a own logo and the vinyl cutter will make lettering and images. But we also value hand craft, and that is why many of our projects are a fusion of technology and traditional methods of making.

We believe nothing is more important than giving every child the skills and support to cook a range of healthy meals and understand the importance of a balanced diet. Nutrition and practical skills are taught on alternate lessons to ensure we get the balance right of practical and theory in order for our students to know how to be healthy and live well.

I am really proud to be a member of such an experienced team, where we all work together to help students achieve beyond what they first thought was possible, and enjoy celebrating the success of every student. We are looking forward to using new technologies and skills to ensure our students are well informed in our ever changing society.

Our new KS3 curriculum provides students with a solid foundation in geographical study. We teach students how to think like a geographer through conducting geographical enquiry, using geographical knowledge to question the wider world around us, and in the process become more knowledgeable and better citizens of the world.

We have designed the curriculum to be challenging, broad in content and with a balance between physical, human and environmental geography meaning our students develop in to knowledgable, confident geographers. Our teaching brings the subject to life and makes it even more relevant to pupils’ lives by using up to date case studies and current events that dominate the headlines. We use a variety of different resources in our lessons, including recent magazine and newspaper articles, interactive media such as videos, ArcGIS for map and data analysis and run a variety of fieldwork trips to engage our students outside the classroom as well as within.

Our new curriculum (redesigned in 2019) provides all our students with a solid foundation in historical study. We teach students how to think like a historian through conducting historical enquiry, using historical knowledge to question the wider world around us, and in the process become more knowledgeable and critical of the world we live in today and how it has been shaped by the past.

The History curriculum experience is academically rigorous. We use strategies in our teaching to support students and give them confidence to tackle longer reading texts to inform and develop literacy skills. We have taken a co-ordinated approach with the English department on essay writing meaning students find success more accessible. Our curriculum is broad, diverse and above all relevant. It covers distinct topics from year 7 including black history and women’s history. We have developed links with the Holocaust Education Trust and for the past few years have hosted

Holocaust survivor events where survivors come into Hayesbrook to speak to students of their experiences. This is just one of the ways we bring history to life as well as offering the chance to visit historical sites and locations such as Auschwitz.

Our ‘meanwhile, elsewhere’ homework activities are also an effective way to extend students’ knowledge on topics they do not cover in the classroom. We use a variety of different resources and media in our lessons, as well as written resources and encourage pupils’ use of online learning websites such as Quizlet and Seneca to increase their knowledge retention.

I find all the things we do in lessons really interesting. The

teachers explain things really well and I like learning lots of really

One of the great strengths of the Computing and ICT department is the expertise of our staff. At a time when many schools are cutting back on providing specialist ICT teaching, because of recruitment issues, all our lessons are taught by trained specialists.

The subject is taught in 3 dedicated ICT rooms each equipped with 30 Pcs. In addition to this there are a number of other fully equipped rooms located around the school including the use of a 3D printer.

An area that we are particularly excited about is the development of our students programming skills; we start this in year 7 and one of the modules they complete in the summer term has them programming robots to scoot across the playground!

We also feel that we need to teach our students life skills and as a result our curriculum includes modules that will equip them to meet the demands of the work place. Most students arrive at Hayesbrook with a great knowledge of certain aspects of computing but do not know how to use a database or a spreadsheets. We will make sure you have the skills we know you will need for the future.

For those students with a flair for the subject we offer a computing pathway all the way up to the end of year 11 and into the sixth form. Many former students have gone on to university to study this route further.

Throughout my time at Hayesbrook I have always enjoyed ICT and I am looking to apply for a degree in Computer Science at university with an emphasis on

artificial intelligence(Adam – Year 12)

Students are provided with opportunities to deepen their mathematical thinking and understanding as well as applying these skills to real world problems.

Our curriculum in years 7,8 and 9 takes a ‘mastery’ approach meaning we understand that practice can make perfect and that everyone learns in different ways and sometimes at different speeds, depending on what topic we are covering.

We use the ‘Maths Ninja Program’ to support a strong foundation in arithmetic to allow students to gain confidence with the use of number. This in turn allows students to stretch themselves and further develop their mathematical understanding.

Students take part in the annual junior and intermediate Maths Challenges with great success, as well as other activities such a puzzle solving mornings and the Tonbridge Schools Maths Challenge Competition.

We have a number of activities and tasks that help support learning and make lessons more engaging, examples include matching activities, virtual visits and mini murder mysteries.

The department aspires to create a love of learning of mathematics and to help students realise their potential. We are working on embedding low stakes testing to enhance learning in the classroom. The maths department at Hayesbrook has a proven track record of excellent outcomes both at GCSE and A Level because of a strong curriculum from day one.

MATHSA Hayesbrook student will be mathematically fluent, numerate, will be able to see connections between concepts, making links and be able to problem solve, reason and communicate mathematically. You will have good understanding of how numbers make the world go round.

At Hayesbrook, no matter what ability, maths is fun for

everyone. The teachers here make maths and challenging, I may not be the best but maths is still one

of my favourite subjects!(Mayson – Year 10)

Our aim is to instil in our pupils an appreciation and love of European Language and Culture.

The MFL Team have all spent time living in their specialist language country so you can expect to be immersed in a cultural experience from the outset.

We want our students to communicate effectively in a second language and value the importance of International conversations.

Our KS3 Spanish curriculum engages students with interactive activities which develops their use of practical language. The knowledge of the language enriches understanding of your own native tongue specifically in the sometimes challenging arena of grammar acquisition. It is for this reason that the MFL and English teams work together in one faculty.

Later, in years 10 and 11, we encourage students to build on their prior learning and develop their skills to GCSE level when they can communicate effectively with a native speaker.

Here at the Hayesbrook, we want you to love the performing arts. In your first couple of weeks at the Hayesbrook, we will be giving you all a trial lesson with our peripatetic teachers on keyboard, guitar and drums. We also offer peripatetic lessons in Music Production and DJing.

We understand that music has undergone considerable changes in how we listen, access and create. We want you to know how to play, listen, record and compose the music you want to. Which is why you’ll learn the foundations of music and then relate it to some of the following subjects; Rap, Afrobeats, Sampling, Underscoring films, cartoons and commercials.

We have been building the department for the last two years, having invested in an iMac suite for music production and a room to practice Djing. We have plans to turn two of our practice rooms into a recording studio and control booth.

In drama, we develop techniques which will enhance your confidence, make public speaking easier and give you tools to always adapt to any situation in life like presenting yourself for a job interview.

What makes our curriculum different? Your son. We have listened to what they want to learn, added what we need to teach them, the result is an experience we hope they will carry with them forever.

Music is great we learn to make music which we’d listen to. I like

drama also as we get to be anybody, go anywhere in the world

Our PE team are highly experienced, and hold specialisms in a wide variety of sports, which suits our approach of offering a broad and balanced curriculum. Building and maintaining positive relationships with our students, and a personal approach is something that we value very highly and have great success with.

We are adaptable in our approach, and will alter the curriculum based on areas of interest of our students. The PE department will often use the skills and qualities of our 6th form students to offer enrichment opportunities throughout the year. Our Sports day has a festival feel, with giant inflatable assault course, fun multi activities, ice cream van as well as a traditional element with competitive track and field events. We hold an annual sports awards ceremony to celebrate participation and reward excellence with certificates, trophies and the well sought after ‘Sports ties’. We also have the School Sports Partnership for West Kent operating out of Hayesbrook and working with over 40 local primary schools, which often leads to extra opportunities for our students, to either compete in various tournaments or to gain accreditation and experience leading and coaching in the wider community.

We are working towards the development of a rugby academy, to complement our well established football academy in partnership with Chelsea Football Club.

Our fully fitted CrossFit/exercise space is ideal for teaching the students about the importance of physical activity and the many ways we can improve our physical and mental well-being. We have brand new outdoor cricket nets, sat on a state of the art bowling surface that is excellent for spring and summer use. We also have a fantastic third generation astro-turf pitch that is FA approved. This is used for lessons and for competitive fixtures against other schools. Our indoor sports hall boasts a full size basketball court, 4 smaller basketball courts, 4 badminton courts, cricket nets and a futsal pitch

I really love PE. There are so many opportunities either during our lessons or after

school if you want to do them. I have enjoyed trying new sports I have not

done before like Futsal(James – Year 7)

The Science department at The Hayesbrook School is a buzzing hive of activity! Practical work is a key element of our teaching methodology and we are lucky enough to have well equipped teaching laboratories to enable us to deliver our practical work in a fun and effective way. The aim of practical work is not only to make lessons more hands on but also to strengthen students’ theoretical knowledge.

Our new Key Stage 3 curriculum has been carefully designed to ensure students learn key scientific knowledge as well as having the opportunity to see how Science is important in the real world and develop their ‘Science Capital’.

Within the Key Stage 3 curriculum we have included a bespoke topic called ‘Careers in Science’ to make sure students are aware of the importance of Science and the many different roles it plays in a variety of jobs. Our curriculum experience ensures that students are challenged and have a firm base of knowledge to ensure they are ready for their GCSE studies. As a department we firmly believe that Science education does not stop when you leave the classroom and we offer many extra-curricular activities ranging from university guest speakers to trips to Professional Science labs. In the future we aspire to increase the number of opportunities available to students. I am incredibly proud to lead my team of experienced and enthusiastic Science teachers as we embark on the privilege of educating the future generations.
