Message from Mrs Wakefield – Welcome Back Everyone! Thank you for the warm welcome back that I have received. My family and I travelled nearly 18,000km in 14 weeks from NSW, QLD, NT, WA, SA, VIC and back home to NSW. We had a fabulous time and created some lifetime memories. I am looking forward to a busy term to end the year. Please check the front of the newsletter each week for dates to remember as we approach the end of 2018. Sporting Schools starts today and continues throughout the term. The sporting skills concentrated on this term are hockey and golf. Thank you to our four staff members who provide this for students after school hours (3pm – 4pm) each Tuesday and Thursday. Schools Spectacular Team – the team and Mrs McLeod started rehearsing yesterday in the library from 3pm to 4pm. This will continue for the next 6 weeks until our team heads to Sydney. Please ensure students bring their songbooks each Monday. Thank you and best wishes everyone with your preparation. Kindergarten 2019 If you are aware of any children who will be starting at our school in 2019, please pass on the following information. 12th November – Kindergarten 2019 Orientation in the school hall. 2019 students should attend and visit the kindergarten rooms, while parents and carers meet in the hall to gather information, chat and watch a slide show regarding Kindergarten 2019. We look forward to meeting some new faces. Our transition/Smooth Start program then continues on the following dates: 19 November, 26th November and 3rd December. Presentation Night Survey With the end of year approaching quickly, it is time to start thinking about assemblies and events. One of our school’s annual events is our presentation night. We have aimed to improve it each year from feedback given to us. I am interested in your thoughts regarding the timing of this event and whether parents/carers would prefer the event to be held in the evening or during the day. I appreciate that many parents/carers work, however on speaking with some families and with quite a bit of notice, families may be able to arrange 2 hours during the day off work. I am interested in your thoughts. I will construct a survey this week and send it to families via the School App. Yours in education – Leanne Wakefield, Principal.

Infants’ Frolic for a Farmer

Last term the infants’ students, teachers and their parents had a fantastic night of dancing fun at our ‘Frolic for a Farmer’! The students had learnt and practised a variety of dances throughout term 3 and wanted to show them off to their parents. The night started with the students dancing to a Zumba piece they had learnt in term 2. This was followed by dances such as Toe the Line, Sing a Song Along and the Mexican Hat Dance. We then had a dinner break and students and their families enjoyed either a picnic dinner or delicious sausages they had purchased to raise money for our farmers in drought. We then continued with some more fun dances such as the Nut Bush, Heal and Toe Polka, the Chicken Dance and the Hokey Pokey. Parents then joined in on our dancing fun and joined their children to dance to the Chicken Dance, Hokey Pokey and the Nut Bush. It was fantastic to see so many parents, grandparents and friends come and support the night and join in on our dancing fun. We would like to say a special thank you to Sally Maslen and Ruth Edwards from the P and C for helping to cook the BBQ and Clair Deen for being the photographer for the night. Special thanks also goes to Hebby’s Bakery for donating all of the bread, Clarence Town Butchers for giving us sausages at a reduced price and the Henrickson family for donating a few kilos of sausages. Together with the proceeds from the students dressing up on Thursday, we raised a total of $1239.95. This money will be donated to the CWA ladies to pass on to the Farmers in Drought relief fund. Thank you again everybody who came along to support GPS and our farmers.

Gloucester High School Tri-Challenge

On the last day of Term 3, myself and seventeen Year 6 students, attended the Gloucester High School Tri-Challenge. We had a wonderful day biking, kayaking and running, with two of the Gloucester teams coming in first and second. The students had an exciting day competing in this high school event and are already talking about competing when they are in Year 7 next year. Mackenzie Schafer, Sam Whittaker and Mitchell Hawkins were the first placed primary team with Kyden DeAngelis, Thomas Hooke and Mitchell Hawkins being the second place getters. All students were a pleasure to take on this excursion. I would like to thank Adam Cameron for his amazing efforts in making this event happen and to the parents/carers who supported their children throughout our preparation. Eve Green Year 6 teacher

Year 5 Parents…. We need YOU! Traditionally, it is the parents of Year 5 students that manage and run the Year 6 Farewell each year. This

allows you to be part of a fun team to put together a wonderful event for our Year 6 students and to sit back next year and enjoy the experience of your own child as they participate in this special and memorable event. We are seeking mums, dads, carers and other special representatives from families to be part of the planning, design and operation of this year’s ‘Farewell to Year 6’. We need a great team to share the load and be part of the fun! Job criteria: Great sense of humour, hardworking, creative, good on a ladder, good in the kitchen, good on the computer, good at leading others, good at being told what to do, or good for nothing. If you fit all, some or none of these criteria…. you are exactly what we need! Thank you to those few Year 5 parents who turned up to offer their support to the organising of the Year 6 farewell this year. Whilst some people did send their apologies on the day, we still require more helpers to be part of organise this special evening. Please join us for our next meeting at 3.05pm on Tuesday 23 October in the 5/6D classroom near the hall. The farewell will be on Tuesday 18th December. If you cannot make it on the day but are willing to contribute to the team, please leave a message at the office or send in a quick note with your child to let us know. If your child does not participate in Sporting Schools, consider joining them for the day or we will have the room adjoining for them to do some quiet activities. We look forward to a room full of happy helpers! Rod Maggs – Assistant Principal (Stage 3)

PtoH Transition Program to GHS Our PtoH Program begins next Wednesday 24 October. Students will leave GPS at 1pm and walk to Gloucester High School for a

1.15pm start. Please ensure that the permission note has been returned outlining how your child will be getting home from the high school on the alternate Wednesdays. Should any changes be required at

later sessions, please send a note in to your child’s teacher. The students will be participating in a variety of lessons and experiences during these sessions, including some activities in the STEM rooms. Therefore, leather topped school shoes are essential to their participation in these sessions as a Work Health and Safety requirement. Without such footwear, students may be unable to join in these sessions. Should you require further information regarding this program, please feel free to contact me at school. Year 5 Parents - Selective High School Applications for 2020

The application process for seeking selective high school placement is opening in the coming weeks. Selective high schools cater for high achieving academically gifted students who may otherwise be without sufficient classmates at their own academic and social level. These schools help gifted and talented students to learn by grouping them with other gifted and talented students, teaching them in specialised ways and providing educational materials at the appropriate level. If you would like to have your child considered for Year 7 selective high school entry in 2020, you need to apply online. Detailed instructions on how to do this are available now at: https://education.nsw.gov.au/public schools/selective-high-schools-and-opportunity-classes/year-7 The application website opens at that link on 9 October 2018 and closes on 12 November 2018. You must apply before the closing date.

It is highly recommended that you discuss your intention to apply for selective high school placement with your child’s class teacher and myself prior to an online submission.

If you would like further information, please see me at school for an information pack outlining the application process.
