A Typical Scenario – Some Reflections
What is missing?
•The control system usually remains invisible.
• It is also assumed it works properly and is well tuned.
In that context:
• Is the control strategy really optimal?
•Are the controllers adequate?
•Are all components really adequate?
•Do we really need to supply the determined amount of heat/cold?

OPTi – Approach
• Develop OPTi-Sim which is a full scale dynamic virtual twin.
• Design the OPTi-Framework by combining OPTi-Sim with components for control and optimization, economic assessment, and user analysis.
• Involve end-consumers
• Gender perspective.

Optimisation on all levels
In OPTi, the hierarchy of the optimisation and control approach makes use of three layers:
• Low-level control of pumps, valves and production units. This includes control configuration selection and design of controllers.
• Optimisation based control of the DHC system by adjusting set points for the low-level control. This includes the consideration of forecast information.
• Optimisation of operation considering (A)DR strategies and production scheduling.

OPTi-Sim – The virtual twin as the basis

Answers:
• Are controllers and components adequate?
Enables:
• Design & Validation
• Re-design
• Testing/Piloting
• New Idea? – No.
• In large scale with full dynamics? – Rarely and usually not flexible.– Control system usually not considered
• Luleå grid: > 10,000 consumers, > 46,000 pipes, 4 production units, sensors, pumps, valves
• Need for network reduction, simplification and automatic generation of dynamic models

Identifying grid control strategy with ProMoVis
Answers:
• Is the control strategy optimal?
Background:
• Achievable performanceis limited by the chosencontrol strategy
• Low level control strategiesaffect on all levels
Enables:
• Optimal selection of controlstrategies
• Decision making/support

Answers:•Where to supply heat and how
much?
Enables:•Selection of target users•Provides the needed amount
of incentives
New idea?•Originates from the smart grid area• It is now adapted to DHC
Virtual Knob Concept – Understanding the user
•Enables the use of live feedback from the consumers about their comfort.
•A simple, intuitive interface to express their experience of the comfort
•Ranging from ‘too cold’ to ‘too hot’.
2017-05-16Wolfgang Birk - Luleå University of Technology 14
Virtual Knob
Answers:
• How much heat/cold is needed?
Enables:
• Active use of the comfort zonein optimization.
• Aids in widening the comfort zone
New idea?
• We believe so. Not the interface though.
• More testing is needed.

Some Concluding Remarks
•In relation to the questions – we believe, we can provide the tools.
•The virtual twin is an enabling technology, but need to be flexible
•Interoperability of engineering tools is essential
•What is next:•Stakeholder involvement to meet the market!•Testing, testing testing…
