OOI Overview
The Ocean Observatories Initiative (OOI) is a long-term,
NSF-funded program to provide 25-30 years of sustained
ocean measurements to study climate variability, ocean
circulation and ecosystem dynamics, air-sea exchange,
seafloor processes, and plate-scale geodynamics.

What is being Procured?• Two classes of Optical Instruments are required by OOI:
– Optical Attenuation and Absorption (OPTAA) instruments
– Spectral Irradiance (SPKIR) instruments
• OOI will be deploying suites of instruments in waters that are optically complex and the sampling strategy will include optical characterization of the water (e.g. light attenuation/absorption and dissolved and particulate material).
• The Optical Instruments will be deployed on a variety of fixed platforms, including seafloor packages and moorings, to measure optical absorption, optical attenuation, and downwelling spectral irradiance.
• OPTTA instruments will be used to measure optical attenuation and absorption in the coastal and open ocean.
• SPKIR instruments will be used to measure downwelling spectral irradiance in the coastal and open ocean.
