Effects of the Crusades

Cultural Diffusion – Europeans had greater exposure to new ideas, such as the use of zero in mathematics, as well as to foreign products, such as silk, rice, spices, coffee, perfumes, cotton cloth, raisins, and glass.

New Learning – From contact with Muslims in Spain and elsewhere, Europeans rediscovered the writings of the Greeks and Romans.

Increased Trade – The European demand for new products like spices, sugar, lemons, and rugs led to increased trade with other parts of the world and enriched Italian city-states

Growth of Intolerance – The Crusades led to Christian persecution of Jews and Muslims in Europe, as well as Islamic persecution of Christians in the Middle East.
