“Why Choose Art?”
A brief explanation about GCSE Art at Swanlea School
WHY STUDY ART? A surge in demand for multimedia artists, animators, and illustrators—especially those who are computer and technology-savvy—is projected for 2018, due to companies’ demand for advertising in online and digital formats. With this in mind, following a creative pathway could put you in a great position for many successful future careers. New figures published earlier this year reveal that the UK’s Creative Industries are now worth over £84.1 billion per year to the UK economy, and the figures show the sector growing at almost twice the rate of the wider UK economy - generating £9.6million per hour.
“What can I do with Art in the real world?” Advertising Architecture
Illustration Graphic design Publishing Games design
Interior Design Textile and fashion design Teaching / lecturing Fine art: sculptor/painter/printmaker Museums and galleries curator
Floristry and hairdressing Scientific Restoration Film/Television and Photography Illustration (books, medical journals, vlogs etc)
“What do I get out of it?”
• Exhibitions of students' work throughout the school and in the wider community
• Trips to Galleries/Art Fairs/Parts of London • A GCSE that is highly valued by Colleges and
Universities.
“What do I have to do?” • 3 coursework projects over 2 years, including a 10
week Mock experience during the Spring of the first year.
• 1 exam – 10 weeks preparation with 10hr final exam (2 days) in the art room working on a final outcome from the Externally Set Assignment.
“Is there any written work or a written exam?” • Yes – there is some written work! (25% of your
overall grade is based on your understanding of the work of other artists which includes notes)
However, there is no written exam at the end.
