TRANSCRIPT

Installation of Oracle Database Express Edition 11g Release2 :

This document describes the installation of Oracle Database Express Edition 11g Release 2 on RHEL5 (Red Hat Enterprise Linux ) using VMware Workstation.Introduction:Oracle Database XE is easy to install. The installation has the following components: VMware Workstation Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL5)

Oracle Database 11g Express Edition VMware Workstation :

VMware Workstation is a hypervisor that runs on x64 computers; it enables users to set up multiple virtual machines (VMs) and use them simultaneously along with the actual machine. Each virtual machine can execute its own operating system, such as Microsoft Windows, Linux or BSD variants. As such, VMware Workstation allows one physical machine to run multiple operating systems simultaneously.Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL):

Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) is a Linux-based operating system developed by Red Hat and targeted toward the commercial market. Red Hat Enterprise Linux is released in server versions for x86, x86-64, Itanium, PowerPC and IBM System z, and desktop versions for x86 and x86-64. All of Red Hat's official support and training and the Red Hat Certification Program centers around the Red Hat Enterprise Linux platform.Oracle Database 11g Express Edition :

Oracle Database 11g Express Edition (Oracle Database XE) is a free version of the world's most capable relational database. Oracle Database XE is easy to install, easy to manage, and easy to develop with. With Oracle Database XE, you use an intuitive, browser-based interface to administer the database, create tables, views, and other database objects, import, export, and view table data, run queries and SQLscripts, and generate reports.Pre requirements for installation of VMware Workstation:

1. Learn about VMware. Make sure you have a thorough understanding of what it does, its limitations and advantages as well as a general technical understanding of the concept of a virtual machine. A general knowledge will help you learn how to use VMWare as well as troubleshoot problems when they arise. VMWare provides documentation and training on its website. There are also many books and courses about virtualizing and user groups devoted to VMWare.

2. Check to make sure your applications support VMWare. Some software has not been tested to run on a virtual machine. If the application does not run correctly in VMWare, it may not be supported by the vendor. VMWare is generally not recommended for gaming or other applications that require high graphics capability and processing speeds.

3. Find out what operating systems you need to run. VMWare offers software for Windows and Unix based systems. It supports running multiple operating systems on a single machine, eliminating the need for dual booting.

4. Determine your computing needs and objectives. VMWare ranges from installations for single computers to data center packages that allow you to virtualize your entire network. It can be used to build a machine which can be deployed to multiple users, simplifying support and user customization. It can also be used to host multiple servers on 1 piece of hardware.5. Run cost calculators and total cost of ownership calculators. This can help determine whether VMWare for a large enterprise is worth the investment. The VMWare website allows you to enter information about your environment to give savings estimates for electricity, hardware and other categories. Keep in mind other savings such as technical support and hardware replacement.

Download VMware to try it out before deploying it to the network. Browse to VMWare.com. Register with VMware by entering contact information and your email address. Save the downloaded file to your hard drive.

Install VMware. In Windows, VMware installs like other programs, through an installation program. Unix based systems will require scripting commands to install VMware. Commands depend on the type of operating system and version.

Build a virtual machine. Instructions for building a machine depend on your operating system and VMware version. Follow the VMware wizards to walk through adding machines to the computer.

Create a test environment: Use a virtual machine to run applications and work in the network environment. Document any technical issues that arise during the trial period.
