Preface

iv Essbase Studio 11.1.1: Create & Manage Data Structures

Course StructureOracle Essbase Studio 11.1.1: Create & Manage Data Structures is a three-day, instructor-led training course consisting of lectures, demonstrations, and hands-on exercises. In this course, the instructor presents a topic conceptually by explaining its purpose, demonstrating how it works, and then guiding the students through the exercises. Demonstrations and hands-on exercises reinforce the concepts and skills introduced during lectures.

Course MaterialsYou use two books in class—the student guide and the activity guide. The instructor may also give you handouts.

Student GuideThe student guide is designed to be used by students and the instructor during lecture time. It has 3 modules:

• Module 1 describes Enterprise Performance Management (EPM) and the relationship of Essbase Studio to Oracle’s EPM system. You briefly explore the Essbase Studio console and then build a simple Essbase application, using the basic functionality of Essbase Studio.

• In Module 2, you examine Essbase Studio functionality in more detail, exploring additional data sources, creating additional metadata elements, hierarchies, and modeling options. In the process, you enhance your Essbase cube.

• In Module 3, you learn how to maintain your models and trace lineage through the Lineage Viewer and how to provide your end users with drill-through access to detailed relational data directly from the spreadsheet.

Each module contains lessons. Each lesson begins with a list of objectives followed by the presentation of slides and accompanying text. The lesson ends with a summary of the topics covered in the lesson.

Activity GuideThe activity guide has three sections—exercises, exercise solutions, and an optional case study.

ExercisesA critical part of the learning process is the challenge of completing real tasks associated with each lesson. Each exercise is an opportunity to apply your new knowledge.

Exercise SolutionsThe exercise solutions present the detailed steps to successfully complete the exercises.

Case StudyThe case study gives you additional hands on practice using Essbase Studio on a true to life business case.

ConventionsThe following text conventions are used in this course book:

• Text to be typed, options to be selected, names of files and modules, and menu selections are displayed in bold type. Examples:
