    YOUR COMMUNITY MUSIC RESOURCE

  • Welcome from Chairperson

Congratulations to Donna Riles and her team in preparing an exciting Program for 2019. I am certainly looking forward to attending as many of these wonderful events as possible during the year.During 2018 the Board of the Conservatorium initiated a review of our Constitution. We look forward to presenting the results of the review and proposals for

change that will reflect the modern community organisation that we are. This year we will also be revisiting our Strategic Plan to ensure that our plans for our organisation reflect the exciting and ambitious ideas that we envisage for the future of our beloved Conservatorium. I urge supporters of the ORC to participate in this consultative process so that our efforts to translate ambition into reality will come to fruition.Top of the list, of course, is the creation of a suitable building that will provide our teachers, their students and the community with a state-of-the art regional conservatorium. While this goal cannot be achieved in a single year, we need to identify the critical steps needed to hasten progress. I would like to challenge all the readers of this Program of musical events to get on board in whatever way they can to help the ORC to grow and improve. Come along to these events, bring people with you who have never thought about coming before, help those who may have difficulty getting to the venues. Perhaps you could become a financial member of the Conservatorium, attend the Annual General Meeting in April and think about joining the Board.I offer my sincere thanks to all the staff, students and their families, participants and volunteers who make the Conservatorium so successful and fun to be involved with. I wish all of them the very best for the coming year.Trevor Hazell Chairperson

  • Music Director’s Message

Welcome to our next Program Book.2019 promises to be another year packed with new and stimulating musical experiences for audiences and performers of all ages. The ORC is committed to bringing superior visiting artists to the region and is particularly proud to be partnering with Musica Viva to not only bring a broad range of musical

genres and ensembles but also introduce a first! A residency with Musica Viva Future Maker, pianist Aura Go.In addition to this we are proud to have developed with Musica Viva and the Godfrey Turner Memorial Music Trust, the inaugural Mary Turner Fellowship, established to support a talented musician/music educator. ORC staff member, David Shaw has been appointed as the inaugural Mary Turner Fellow 2019-2021.We are also delighted to welcome the return of the beautiful Grigoryan Brothers to the ORC auditorium. Their enthralling performance will sell out quickly, so be sure to book early for this concert in August. With the passing of Australia’s pre-eminent Music Educator, Richard Gill AO, last year, we are more determined than ever to ensure his legacy of access to music education for all, lives on. In Richard’s own words,

Music can be a potent force for good in the life of a child, especially when it is taught properly and sequentially. So why music? We teach music because it is unique and good. We teach music so that children can make their own music. We teach music because it acts in a unique way on the heart, mind, soul and spirit of the child, stimulating thought

and imagination in very special ways.Join with us to create, inspire and enjoy music in 2019!Donna Riles BMusEdMusic Director

  • Australian Brandenburg Orchestra Ayres and Graces15 March 7pm Music from the French and English Baroque.Following on from their very popular tour in October 2018, the Brandenburg

Ensemble will return in a different configuration to include the Baroque oboe and flute, recorder, viola da gamba and theorbo alongside the ubiquitous Baroque violin and viola. The ensemble will deliver an inspiring program of chamber music from the English and French Baroque on this wonderful combination of rare period instruments.Eighteenth-century London was a bustling entrepreneurial centre with a cosmopolitan concert life and a growing market for domestic music-making in wealthy households. The musical richness of the city attracted many foreign musicians including George Frideric Handel. The musical items from Paris and Versailles performed in this program are by contrast uniformly in the style of Jean-Baptiste Lully, the fashionable director of music at the Court of ‘Sun King’ Louis XIV of France.Tickets and further information: brandenburg.com.au/2019regional

From the wartime spirit of Novello, the hilarity of the Comedian Harmonists via the tumult of Kurt Weill & Hans Eisler’s Berlin, the Golden Age of Lehár & Stolz’s Vienna, the passion of Piaf & Brel’s Paris, to the witty irreverence of today, KABARETT is a celebration of wild electric decadence and dangerously dark humour. Brad studied at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, National Opera Studio, London and with Marilyn Horne at the Music Academy of the West, California.Tickets $TBC
