Staff at the Espanola and Manitoulin campuses participated in Orange Shirt Day on September 30 at their respective locations to recognize and bring awareness to what happened to Indigenous children in residential schools and the impact the system had on families and Indigenous communities. Chris Prechotko, a professor from our Manitoulin campus, facilitated an orange pin-making workshop and played the TV series ‘First Contact’, which follows six Canadians as they explore Indigenous Canada and confront their stereotypical opinions and prejudices of Indigenous People. Staff at the Manitoulin campus participated in a session with the Naandwehgiigamik Health Centre. Jenny McGraw, Youth Alcohol and Drug Worker/Health Team Lead, and Debbie Shawana, Brighter Futures Building Healthy Communities Worker, shared their family histories and led a Q&A. They also taught a tobacco pouch-making workshop. Congratulations to the 2019 Pre-apprenticeship Carpentry Graduates! Do you want to learn in a comfortable, friendly, and flexible environment? Cambrian’s free Adult Literacy and Academic Upgrading programs are perfect if you want to obtain your high school equivalency certificate, improve your job opportunities and employment skills, or meet prerequisites for college programs. If you are interested in becoming a Cambrian student, come see us in Espanola or Little Current, or call your local campus for more information.

Academic Upgrading and Adult Literacy

The Adult Literacy class at the Espanola campus has many hard working students! Along with their professor Evelyn Diebel, students created a poster that showcases all the good things that the Adult Literacy program offers. When students were asked what they liked most about the Adult Literacy class, here’s what they said:

“Having a learning partner to help me read.” – Jason

“Learning new things every day is exciting for me.” – Andrew

“Math! Working on math games and math stations.” – Kendra

“Working hard and working independently towards my goals.” – Kelsey

“Getting to know more about computers and not being so scared of them.” – Paula

“Learning how to write creatively with new vocabulary by taking online writing courses.” – Carmelle

“Learning new skills, volunteering, getting out into the community, as well as setting goals to do better in math.” – Nancy

Espanola Employment Options hosted the Connections to Your Future Expo on October 8 at the Elk’s Club in Espanola. The event gave the public the chance to learn more about Employment Options and discover what services are available to help them reach their education or employment goals. Local employers and service groups were invited to participate.
