On Friday, February 13,
2015, North Middle/
High School held its
annual career fair. Rep-
resentatives from area four-year universi-
ties and community businesses lined the
floor of the North Middle/High School
gymnasium sharing their wealth of
knowledge with students in grades
six through twelve. Some of the ca-
reer fair participants were Claflin
University, Savannah River Site,
Food Lion, SC Department of Pub-
lic Safety, Orangeburg County Ani-
mal Control, William McCord Ado-
lescent Treatment Facility,
Orangeburg County Chief Magis-
trate, Derrick Dash, and Probate
Judge, Pandora Glover.
NMHS Hosts Annual Career Fair
speaker during our Black
History Month program. For
almost five minutes, Rebecca
delivered an amazing recita-
tion on the topic, “If Dr.
Martin Luther King, Jr. could
speak today…” Her charis-
matic delivery, voice inflec-
tions, hand gestures, etc.,
captivated and held the stu-
dents’ attention, and earned
her an arousing standing ova-
tion upon completion.
Rebecca is an A/B Honor
Roll student who loves read-
ing, writing, science, and Be-
ginner’s Band. Her favorite
color is purple, and she loves
participating in the choir and
in the book club at Jerusalem
Baptist Church in North.
Other program participants
included: Re De Jah Clark
(MC), Zhanae’ Nimmons,
Robert Gordon, and Sion Du-
rant. The audience was pleas-
ured with musical selections
from the NMHS Jazz Ensem-
ble under the leadership of
Ms. Deedra O. Wright. Last-
ly, a student chorale sang the
Black National anthem, “Lift
Ev’ry Voice and Sing”.

before the
crowd of mid-
dle and high
school students without any
hesitation. Rebecca Joyce
Durant, an amazing fifth
grader, was the keynote
MLK and / or his vision, and
the artwork was displayed in
the foyer area of the church.
Three students from Mrs.
Aiken's class, Qu'Essence
Gillison, Tykia Palmer, and
Kadeshia Livingston, created
pencil sketch collages and a
painting for this event.
The OCSD5 second Annual
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
Oratory Competition was
held on January 29, at the
New Mt. Zion Baptist
Church in Orangeburg. The
OCSD5 student-artists pro-
vided artwork depicting a
relevant subject to
Dr. King “Speaks”

Basketball Player & Coach Receive Region Honors
On February 10, 2015, North varsity basketball player Andre Blackwell was selected as the Region IV-A Player of the Year, and North coach, Bobby Rivers was selected as Region IV-A Coach of the Year.
Times & Democrat Teen of the Week
On January 11, 2015, Lonnie Bolen, sen-ior, was honored as The Times and Democrat Teen of the Week.
The Math Department of
North Middle/High School
hosted math night Thursday,
February 5, 2015. The pro-
gram began at 6:00 P.M.,
with an overview of the new
state-mandated tests: ACT
and WorkKeys (juniors) and
ACT Aspire (grades 3-8) by
Ms. Brenda D. Inabinette,
Literacy Coach.
Ms. Inabinette provided par-
ents with nine mathematic
strategies that work on ACT
and WorkKeys tests.
Parents and students also par-
ticipated in teacher-led mini
lessons on the Constructed
Response, Plane Algebraic
Geometry, Fractions, and
Graphing Calculators: Trans-
forming Parent Functions.

selected to participate in the
2015 Region 4 Junior Con-
cert Band Clinic at Charles-
ton Southern University
in Charleston, S.C. The
event was held February 20-
21, 2015.

National Honor Society Blood Drive
The National
Honor Socie-
ty hosted a
Blood Drive
on February
26, 2015.
Freshman students were introduced to the Ac-
celerate program on February 9, 2015. The
program provides advanced academic prepara-
tion and exposure to the real-world of engi-
neering during the high school years.
Successful completion of the program results
in college credit and emphasizes team-based
projects and mastery of the basic tools of engi-
neering, physics, calculus, chemistry and Eng-
lish. The Accelerate program is a product of
the SC governor’s School for Science and
Mathematics.
ACCELERATE
On Wednesday, February 18,
2015, LaVal Anderson, Program
Coordinator of TRIO, an educa-
tional opportunity center funded
by the U.S. Department of Educa-
tion, visited with North High
School seniors. Some of the ser-
vices provide by TRIO are assis-
tance in completing applications
for college admission, testing and
financial aid and academic and
career counseling. The “SC State
TRIO Program’s goal is to help
students overcome class, social,
academic and cultural barriers to

Congratulations to Austin
Gleaton, Robert Gordon,
and Kayla Baker for being
selected as delegates for
the Orangeburg County
Chamber of Commerce
Junior Leadership Pro-
gram. Throughout the pro-
gram, they will learn a
variety of valuable leader-
ship skills and become
more aware of community
issues and business ethics.
The program also focuses
on team-building skills,
volunteering opportunities,
healthcare careers and a
community project. The
students will tour business-
es and have the opportuni-
ty to meet with community
leaders. The overall goal is
for students to become
more involved in the com-
munity and improve their
leadership skills.
