Organ Voluntary Pastoral - Herbert Sumsion

Welcome and Introduction

We gather in praise of the God who is Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

All Amen.

This is the day that the Lord has made. All Let us rejoice and be glad in it.

The Lord be with you.

All And also with you.

Hymn - sung by St Martin's Voices

All creatures of our God and King,

Lift up your voice and with us sing, Alleluia! Alleluia!

Thou burning sun with golden beam, Thou silver moon with softer gleam!

O praise Him! O praise Him! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!

Thou rushing wind that art so strong,

Ye clouds that sail in heaven along, O praise Him! Alleluia! Thou rising moon, in praise rejoice,

Ye lights of evening, find a voice! O praise Him!

Thou flowing water, pure and clear, Make music for thy Lord to hear,

Alleluia! Alleluia! Thou fire so masterful and bright,

That givest man both warmth and light. O praise Him!

Let all things their Creator bless,

And worship Him in humbleness, Alleluia! Alleluia!

Praise, praise the Father, praise the Son, And praise the Spirit, Three in One! O praise Him!

Prayers of Confession

As those who know the generosity of God, let us confess our sins, especially

the ways in which we take creation and God's gifts for granted.

Silence is kept.

We confess to you our lack of care for the world you have given us.

Lord have mercy. All Lord have mercy.

We confess to you our selfishness in not sharing the earth's bounty fairly. Christ have mercy.

All Christ have mercy.

We confess to you our failure to protect the environment.

Lord have mercy. All Lord have mercy.

May the Father of all mercies cleanse you from your sins, and restore you in his image to the praise and glory of his name, through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Amen.

The Gloria (For those in church, please listen

as the soloist sings.)

The Collect

Glorious God, the whole creation proclaims your marvellous work: increase in us a capacity to wonder and delight in it, that heaven's praise may echo in our

hearts and our lives be spent as good stewards of the earth, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Liturgy of the Word

Old Testament Reading: Hosea 2.18-23 Read by Sarah Kiernan

I will make for you a covenant on that day with the wild animals, the birds of the air, and the creeping things of the ground; and I will abolish the bow, the sword,

and war from the land; and I will make you lie down in safety. And I will take you for my wife for ever; I will take you for my wife in righteousness and in

justice, in steadfast love, and in mercy. I will take you for my wife in faithfulness; and you shall know the Lord. On that day I will answer, says the Lord, I will

answer the heavens and they shall answer the earth; and the earth shall answer the grain, the wine, and the oil, and they shall answer Jezreel; and I will sow him

for myself in the land. And I will have pity on Lo-ruhamah, and I will say to Lo-ammi, ‘You are my people’; and he shall say, ‘You are my God.’

This is the word of the Lord. All Thanks be to God.

New Testament Reading: Romans 8.18-23

Read by Harriet Plyler

I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory about to be revealed to us. For the creation waits with eager

longing for the revealing of the children of God; for the creation was subjected to futility, not of its own will but by the will of the one who subjected it, in

hope that the creation itself will be set free from its bondage to decay and will obtain the freedom of the glory of the children of God. We know that the whole creation has been groaning in labour pains until now; and not only the

creation, but we ourselves, who have the first fruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly while we wait for adoption, the redemption of our bodies.

This is the word of the Lord.

All Thanks be to God.

Gospel Reading: Matthew 6.25-34

Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia.

You are worthy, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honour and power, for you created all things.

All Alleluia

Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Matthew All Glory to you O Lord.

‘Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or what

you will drink, or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing? Look at the birds of the air; they

neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? And can any of you by

worrying add a single hour to your span of life?

And why do you worry about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they neither toil nor spin, yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his

glory was not clothed like one of these. But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which is alive today and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will he not

much more clothe you - you of little faith?

Therefore do not worry, saying, “What will we eat?” or “What will we drink?” or “What will we wear?” For it is the Gentiles who strive for all these things; and indeed your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things.

Page 7: ORDER OF SERVICE Climate Sunday

7

But strive first for the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these

things will be given to you as well. So do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will bring worries of its own. Today’s trouble is enough for today.

This is the Gospel of the Lord. All Praise to you O Christ.

The Sermon Martin Carr

The Nicene Creed All We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty,

maker of heaven and earth, of all that is seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ,

the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God,

begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made.

For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate from the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary and was made man.

For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried.

On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures he ascended into heaven

and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead,

and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life,

who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshipped and glorified,

who has spoken through the prophets.

We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church.

We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen

Prayers of Intercession Led by Rachael Twomey

God of life:

All Hear our prayer.

at the end:

Merciful Father, All accept these prayers for the sake of your Son,

our Saviour, Jesus Christ. Amen.

The Liturgy of the Sacrament

The Peace

You shall go out in joy and be led back in peace;

the mountains and the hills before you shall burst into song, and all the trees of the field shall clap their hands.

The peace of the Lord be always with you.

All And also with you.

We share the Peace using the British Sign Language (BSL) sign.

The Preparation of the Table

As the grain once scattered in the fields and the grapes once dispersed on the

hillside are now united on this table in bread and wine, so, Lord, may your whole Church soon be gathered together from the corners of the earth into

your kingdom. Amen.

The Eucharistic Prayer

The Lord be with you. All And also with you.

Lift up your hearts.

All We lift them to the Lord.

Page 9: ORDER OF SERVICE Climate Sunday

9

Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

All It is right to give thanks and praise.

Blessed are you, Lord God, our light and salvation; to you be glory and praise for ever. From the beginning you have created all things and all your works

echo the silent music of your praise. In the fullness of time you made us in your image, the crown of all creation. You give us breath and speech, that with the

angels and archangels and all the powers of heaven we may find a voice to sing your praise, saying:

All Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might. Heaven and earth are full of your glory.

Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.

Hosanna in the highest.

How wonderful the work of your hands, O Lord. As a mother tenderly gathers her children, you embraced a people as your own. When they turned away and

rebelled your love remained steadfast. From them you raised up Jesus our Saviour, born of Mary, to be the living bread, in whom all our hungers are

satisfied. He offered his life for sinners, and with a love stronger than death he opened wide his arms on the cross.

On the night before he died, he came to supper with his friends and, taking

bread, he gave you thanks. He broke it and gave it to them, saying: Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of me.

At the end of supper, taking the cup of wine, he gave you thanks, and said: Drink this, all of you; this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for

you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.

Great is the mystery of faith:

All Christ has died: Christ is risen:

Christ will come again.

Father, we plead with confidence his sacrifice made once for all upon the cross; we remember his dying and rising in glory, and we rejoice that he intercedes

for us at your right hand. Pour out your Holy Spirit as we bring before you these gifts of your creation; may they be for us the body and blood of your

dear Son. As we eat and drink these holy things in your presence, form us in the likeness of Christ, and build us into a living temple to your glory.

Page 10: ORDER OF SERVICE Climate Sunday

10

Bring us at the last with all the saints to the vision of that eternal splendour for

which you have created us; through Jesus Christ, our Lord, by whom, with whom, and in whom, with all who stand before you in earth and heaven, we

worship you, Father almighty, in songs of everlasting praise: All Blessing and honour and glory and power

be yours for ever and ever. Amen.

The Lord’s Prayer Let us pray with confidence as our Saviour has taught us:

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name.

Thy Kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses,

as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

For thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

The Breaking of the Bread We break this bread to share in the body of Christ.

All Though we are many, we are one body, because we all share in one bread.

Agnus Dei

All Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world,

have mercy on us.

Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world, have mercy on us.

Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world,

grant us peace.

God’s holy gifts for God’s holy people. All Jesus Christ is holy, Jesus Christ is Lord,

to the glory of God the Father.

The priest receives using the words 'The Body and Blood of Christ' and all say 'Amen'.

Page 11: ORDER OF SERVICE Climate Sunday

11

Communion will be administered in one kind in front of the altar. Please use the hand

sanitiser provided if you wish to receive the bread, and form a line maintaining 2m distancing. Blessings can be given as the sign of the cross, though the priest will remain

silent.

After receiving communion, you are invited to move to the Mariners’ Chapel to light a

candle as a sign of your commitment to act on climate change. Please continue to maintain physical distancing.

A Prayer of Spiritual Communion for those at home

All Thanks be to you, Lord Jesus Christ, for all the benefits you have

given us, for all the pains and insults you have borne for us. Since we cannot now receive you sacramentally, we ask you to come spiritually into our hearts. O most merciful redeemer, friend and

brother, may we know you more clearly, love you more dearly, and follow you more nearly, day by day. Amen.

Music during Communion

'All things bright and beautiful' - John Rutter

sung by Dorothy Lawrence

Prayer after Communion

Creator God, send your Holy Spirit to renew this living world, that the whole

creation, in its groaning and striving, may know your loving purpose and come to reflect your glory; in Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

All Almighty God, we thank you for feeding us with the body and blood of your son Jesus Christ. Through him we offer you our souls and

bodies to be a living sacrifice. Send us out in the power of your Spirit to live and work to your praise and glory. Amen.

Notices

The Blessing and Dismissal

As the whole of creation looks with eager longing for the redemption of

humankind, let us pledge ourselves anew to serve our Creator God, the Father who is the maker of all things, the Son through whom all things are made, and the Holy Spirit, the giver of life, who renews the face of the earth.

Page 12: ORDER OF SERVICE Climate Sunday

12

Let us affirm our commitment to care actively for God's creation.

All Lord of life and giver of hope, we pledge ourselves to care for creation, to reduce our waste, to live sustainably, and to value the

rich diversity of life. May your wisdom guide us, that life in all its forms may flourish, and may be faithful in voicing creation's praise.

Amen.

May God the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the source of all goodness, pour his blessing upon all things created, and upon us his children, that we may use his gifts to his glory and the welfare of all peoples; and the blessing of God

almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be among you and remain with you always. Amen.

Go in peace, and may the commitment we have made this day

be matched by our faithful living. All Thanks be to God. Amen. Amen. Amen.

Those in church now move outside onto the piazza to praise God in creation in the words

of our final hymn. Please keep social distance throughout.

Hymn - sung by St Martin's Voices

Fill your hearts with joy and gladness,

Sing and praise your God and mine! Great the Lord in love and wisdom,

Might and majesty divine! He who framed the starry heavens

Knows and names them as they shine.

Praise the Lord, his people, praise him! Wounded souls his comfort know; Those who fear him find his mercies,

Peace for pain and joy for woe; Humble hearts are high exalted,

Human pride and power laid low.

Praise the Lord for times and seasons, Cloud and sunshine, wind and rain;

Spring to melt the snows of winter Till the waters flow again;

Grass upon the mountain pastures, Golden valleys thick with grain.

Page 13: ORDER OF SERVICE Climate Sunday

13

Fill your hearts with joy and gladness,

Peace and plenty crown your days; Love his laws, declare his judgments,

Walk in all his words and ways; He the Lord and we his children -

Praise the Lord, all people, praise!
