JUSTICE AND MERCY Brother Robert Milligan, in his book “The Scheme of Redemption” tells of Zaleucus, king of Locris who ruled around 500 B.C. He was a se-vere but just ruler. In one of his decrees he for-bade the use of wine unless it were prescribed as a medicine; and in another he ordered that all adulterers should be punished with the loss of both of their eyes. When his own son was found guilty of this crime and thus was to be subject to the punishment of the loss of both eyes, King Zaleucus found himself in a predicament. What was he to do. His love for his son was such that he did not want to see him reduced to being blind and thus unable to perhaps care for himself. Yet to simply ignore his own law and allow his son to go free without any punishment would destroy the king’s own standing of justice in the eyes of the people. Zaleucus, in order to maintain the authority of his own laws and to show at the same time a becoming parental leniency, decided to share the punishment due to his son by causing one of his own eyes to be thrust out along with one of the eyes of his offending son. In so doing he suc-ceeded in maintaining the majesty of his govern-ment and his own character as a just and right-eous sovereign was magnified in the eyes of his subjects. In a lesser sense this is comparable to what Christ did for us in going to the cross in our place to take the punishment that was due to us the of-fending children. We often think of this as is dis-played in the dying of Jesus in the place of Barabbas. Barabbas was involved in an insurrec-tion and had committed murder (Luke 23:19), yet he was set free while Jesus who was guilty of nothing was delivered over to be crucified. In real-ity Jesus went to the cross in the place of every one of us. He took the punishment due to us that we might be free. In writing to the church at Rome Paul said, “But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sin-ners, Christ died for us” (Romans 5:8). God’s love is seen in Christ’s laying down His life for those who were neither just nor good, but ungodly sinners. Again in his second letter to the church at Corinth, Paul said, “For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him” (II Cor.5:21). Again we see this truth that the One who never sinned, suffered as if He had sinned! And we, who have sinned, have been freed as if we had never sinned. Jesus willingly took the punishment due to us that we might live eternally with Him. In so do-ing “…He became the author of eternal salva-tion to all who obey Him” (Heb. 5:9b).
Our most heartfelt sympathy is extended to Catherine & Brown Rogers at the pass-ing of Catherine’s sister, Ellen Brown, who has been battling cancer for a long time. Her funeral service was yesterday in
South Carolina.
