Bill’s Blog BY BILL ALLEN

It was really nice to be away this past week—we celebrated our one-year anniversary here at West Erwin by being with three of our four wonderful grandchildren! Oh yeah, it seems like their parents were there as well… Thanks to all who covered for Bill this past week while we were away.

This week we resume our study through the book of Psalms with our Sunday morning sermon, and continue Sunday evening in 1 Timothy with a look at chapter 5. Our thoughts in the morning will center on Psalms 40 & 50. They both speak of true worship, true obedience, true religion. The OT and NT are very consistent. They both state in the strongest of terms that it doesn’t matter if we’ve got everything else “right”—if our lives are not lived each day to honor God by serving others, by treating them with love and respect and consideration, then we are not practicing “true religion.” Here are a few of these great statements of Scripture.

DoestheLORDdelightinburntofferingsandsacrificesasmuchasinobeyingtheLORD?Toobeyisbetterthansacrifice,andtoheedisbetterthanthefatoframs.(1Sam.15:22)

ForIdesiremercy,notsacrifice,andacknowledgmentofGodratherthanburntofferings.(Hosea6:6)

WithwhatshallIcomebeforetheLORDandbowdownbeforetheexaltedGod?ShallIcomebeforehimwithburnt offerings, with calves a year old? He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what doestheLORDrequireofyou?ToactjustlyandtolovemercyandtowalkhumblywithyourGod.(Micah6:6,8)

“Themost importantone,”answered Jesus,“is this: ‘Hear,O Israel:TheLordourGod,theLord isone. LovetheLordyourGodwithallyourheartandwithallyoursoulandwithallyourmindandwithallyourstrength.’The second is this: ‘Love yourneighboras yourself.’ There isnocommandment greater than these.” (Mark12:29-31)

Andwhateveryoudo,whether inwordordeed,do itall inthenameoftheLordJesus,givingthankstoGodtheFatherthroughhim.(Col.3:17)

Asthebodywithoutthespiritisdead,sofaithwithoutdeedsisdead.(James2:26)

Through Jesus, therefore, let us continually offer to God a sacrificeof praise—the fruit of lipsthat openlyprofess his name. And do not forget to do good and to share with others, for with such sacrificesGod ispleased.(Heb.13:15-16)

NEBRASKA MISSION – THIS WEEK

A group of 40 left Thursday night from West Erwin at 8pm for our annual pilgrimage to West Point, NE to work with the church there. We will be doing a VBS for the community all week with the theme of “God’s Creation: Digging for Answers”, looking at each of the days of creation as well as spending a day discussing the flood and even some about dinosaurs! Today we are leading and worshipping with the West Point church. One Monday afternoon we will be helping them with several work projects, including taking down several large trees on their church property that have started to affect their parking lot, as well as resealing the roof of their church building. On Tuesday afternoon we’ll finish up those projects if need-be, and that night we’ll be providing a free screening (and free food) of the movie “God’s Not Dead 2” for West Point and all the surrounding communities. Wednesday evening is the VBS “Open House”, where we ask parents to come and see what their kids have been up to all week, and then have a good ole ice cream social afterwards. And finally on Thursday, we wrap up our last day of VBS and begin our trip home, stopping in Kansas City for a fun day on Friday before the final push home on Saturday. It’s a very long, but rewarding, trip. You cannot imagine, if you’ve never been, how encouraging this week is to the very small church that is there and its few remaining members. It is truly the highlight of their church year. Please be praying for our drivers on the road, as well as that our teens can communicate the message of Christ to their students at VBS!

TULSA MISSION TRIP – JULY 24-29 Some of our high school students will join a larger group of teens on our second mission trip of the summer, to work with inner city kids at the Contact Church of Christ in Tulsa, OK at “Camp Contact”. We will be partnering with high school students from Pine Tree in Longview and Chandler St. in Kilgore to form a group large enough to participate. If you are a high school student who would like to come on this trip, sign up in class or please talk with Eric ASAP! The cost is $50.

THE BENEVOLENCE CENTER IS IN NEED OF ANY TYPE OF BEDSHEETS.

PLEASE GIVE THEM TO DONNIE CARNATHAN.

If you will make homemade cookies for VBS please sign the sheet at the Information Center. We need 20 dozen cookies. Have them here on Wed., July 20 or no later than Fri. July 22. VBS Kick-off Dinner: Those teaching, helping or decorating are invited to a dinner on Thursday, the 21st. We will decorate Thursday evening, the 21st and Friday, the 22nd … more details at a later date.
