The Sayings Gospel Q was composed in the central decades of the first century CE by Galilean villagers who had acquired knowledge of Greek mostly through their involvement with the public admin-istration. The present book analyzes the text of Q in order to redis-cover the terminological and ideological traces of the activity of these sub-elite scribes in the Sayings Gospel. Given the bureaucratic positions occupied by the members of this group, the peculiar use of the phrase Basileia tou theou carries a specific significance for its theological political implications. On the basis of Giorgio Agam-ben’s recent revision of the category of political theology, the atti-tude of Q on divine kingship is understood as an instance of sub-elite negotiation of social and political positions vis-à-vis the expansion of Roman imperial hegemony in the eastern Mediterra-nean. In this context the author(s) of Q envisage apocalyptic scenar-ios in which divine kingship replaces human rulers and native sub-elite bureaucrats can share in the exercise of cosmic government.

In dieser Untersuchung wird ein Teil des Spruchevangeliums Q näher analysiert: Q 17,23-37 (Lk 17,23-37 par. Mt 24,26-28.37-41). Zunächst wird dabei die Rekonstruktion und Auslegung dieses Textes erläutert, was auch im Blick auf die kanonischen Evangelien fruchtbringend ist. Anschließend wird der Text genauer redaktions- und kompositionsgeschichtlich untersucht, um die Beobachtungen in einem weiteren Schritt in die Entstehungsgeschichte des gesamten Spruchevangeliums einzuordnen. Insgesamt wird als Ergebnis dieser Studie das Modell von P. Hoffmann als plausibelstes Modell für die Entstehung des Spruchevangeliums herausgestellt, wobei aber in ein-zelnen Punkten von der Darstellung Hoffmanns abgewichen wird. Theologisch ist die Entstehungsgeschichte des Spruchevangeliums vor allem für die Entwicklung der frühchristlichen Christologie inte-ressant. Während die Christologie in Q vor allem von der „Men-schensohn“-Konzeption geprägt ist, wird der „Christus“-Titel merk-würdig distanziert behandelt. In der Versuchungsgeschichte und in Q 17,23 kann man zwar messianische Anklänge erkennen, jedoch werden diese Formen der Messiaserwartung in Q immer negativ bewertet.

The twelfth volume in the series Documenta Q is concerned with the reconstruction of the Q text behind Luke 13:34-35 par. Matt 23:37-39. Q 13:34-35 is a particularly difficult pericope to position in Q. The International Q Project’s presentation of the critical text of Q 13:34-35, together with the exhaustive history of research on which it is based, will enhance considerably research in the Sayings Gospel Q, the historical Jesus, Jewish-Christian relations, and New Testament theology. The database and evaluations are expanded and much-revised versions of those presented and discussed at the meet-ing of the International Q Project in Rattenbach, Germany, 1994. Just prior to the bibliography at the conclusion of the volume, the resultant critical text of Q 13:34-35 is printed. This Greek text is followed by English, German, and French translations (Lukan chap-ter and verse numeration is used as a convenience and a mere con-vention).

THE EARLIEST NON-MYSTICAL JEWISH USE OF IAO

The finding of the pronounced divine name Ιαω freely used in a LXX MS from Qumran “has left many scholars baffled” (Kristin De Troyer). This name is best known from gnostic and magical sources, but till now no one has provided a history of its background prior to its move into these genres, necessary for placing it in the LXX’s textual tradition and understanding the chronology of the gradual disuse of God’s name in non-mystical contexts. This book presents new evidence (especially onomastic and classical) for, and reveals problems with prior scholarship’s positions on, the continued non-mystical pronunciation of the divine name among some within second temple period Judaism, and precisely when the name Ιαω moved into the mystical sphere. Key matters addressed include the divine name’s forms in the LXX and NT. The work also contains the first English translation and commentary of Byzantine polymath John Lydus’ chapter on the Jewish God from De mensibus 4.53.

Fokkelman states, “The Bible does not contain one single instance of small talk.” This thesis examines relational dialogue between the Deity and human individuals in Genesis by separating the conver-sations from narrative through lines that most often inform biblical analysis. I am interested in snapshots of character developed in inti-mate conversations, when ‘face to face’ dialogue is allowed to take center stage. These conversations then become surprising and unex-pected. In them the Deity talks with the first human to commit murder, not his regarded brother; recognizes a foreign slave as a unique and valued individual yet rebukes the chosen matriarch; potential heirs are dismissed and a legitimate successor only prom-ised. All the while humans argue, cry, wrestle, laugh, express a lim-ited worldview, while demanding a response from their Deity. These conversations challenge our opinion of a distant Deity and pushthe reader to redefine their understanding of the Divine/Human relationship.

Written within the historical-critical paradigm, this commentary on Proverbs 1-9 ventures to overcome the bifurcation of “historical” and “literary” perspectives in biblical interpretation. Avoiding novel propositions about composition as well as claims for alternative read-ing strategies, it strives to take the text seriously at the philological, structural and compositional levels in order to indicate the book’s amplitude and potential. This is done in dialogue with recent and traditional Jewish and Christian readings. The self-description of Wisdom, which has had a hugely eventful reception in the history of Christian doctrine, is particularly striking in this respect. Usually taken to fit uncomfortably into Israel’s “salvation history”, the uni-versal scope of the edited poems directs the reader’s eye beyond the history of one nation and turns wisdom’s putative dearth into a theological asset. The sages knew the limits of their practical advice and aimed it at ethically living the Fear of God.

The contribution of this commentary to the understanding of the book of Zechariah is mainly in four areas. The first is close attention to philological detail, with a special focus on textual criticism, lexical semantics, and literary wordplay. A second area of interest is in the history of interpretation of the book, and takes into account a wide range of exegetical material, from rabbinic and patristic times to the present. A third area of interest is in intertextuality. Many passages become fully intelligible only when they are understood as alluding to earlier Scripture. Finally, the commentary has an interest in Christian theological interpretation. The commentary is also remarkable in that it breaks with the traditional division of the book into two parts, and argues that it consists instead of three independ-ent and quite different parts, each of which is attributable to the prophet after whom the book is named.

On considère habituellement les livres des Maccabées comme pro-totype de la littérature de persécution. Il importait donc de mettre en place le thème de la persécution antijuive dans le contexte histo-rique de la domination grecque, en utilisant les apports les plus récents de l’épigraphie, de la numismatique et de l’archéologie. Ces livres conduisent également à s’interroger sur l’invention du martyre dans le judaïsme et le christianisme, puisqu’ils ont indéniablement construit un modèle de martyrologie. Il faut cependant se demander si tel était leur but. En définitive, il s’agit d’évaluer le travail de mémoire dont témoigne la transmission de ces textes «en amont», en vérifiant les bases événementielles des récits et en étudiant les traditions scripturaires et littéraires dans lesquelles il s’inscrivent, aussi bien qu’«en aval», en explorant relectures, réinterprétations et mutations de ces récits. Un tel travail de mémoire doit être analysé dans sa dimension politique, identitaire et religieuse, ainsi qu’à tra-vers l’apparition d’une commémoration littéraire. They deal with various aspects of this fascinating topic that has received much attention in recent years. Among the topics addressed are: the influence of the emperor cult in the Galilee, the similarities and differences between the Roman emperor cult and the New Testament evidence, the concept of universalism as understood by Roman and Christian authors, the notion of the divine judge, the ritual of proskynesis , and methodological problems in dealing with the emperor cult and the New Testament evidence. Several essays deal with specific passages from the gospels – the Son of David title, the controversy on paying taxes, Jesus and the emperors as miracle workers, the notion of conquering and victory in John, and Roman characters in the Gospel of John (the basilikos , the cen-turion, Pilate).

This third volume of Understanding What One Reads includes for-ty-two studies of the New Testament. The three volumes cover 1992-2003 (I); 2003-2011 (II) and 2011-2014 (III). Though for the most part the content of this third volume falls under the cate-gory of responses to recent scholarly books or articles, some confer-ence papers directed toward more general audience are included. In this volume Professor Lambrecht continues his defense of the thesis of Mark’s dependence on Q. In addition, a major subdivision reflects on Paul. At the end of this third book there is provided a canonical list of his English articles written between 1992-2014 from Collected Studies on Pauline Literature and the Book on Revela-tion (Rome, 2001) as well as those in the three volumes of Under-standing What One Reads . These additional features will facilitate endeavors to follow the chronological development of Professor Lambrecht’s thought.

The synoptic Gospels record a remarkable story about an anony-mous woman – the ‘Haemorrhoissa’ in further tradition – suffering from incessant uterine bleeding who, without Jesus’ intention or knowledge, was healed by his power (Mark 5:24b-34parr). The Haemorrhoissa motif had an important place in early Christianity, and from its earliest manifestation as synoptic narrative it developed into a multifarious motif embedded in a variety of contexts. One of its most remarkable developments was its transformation into the Veronica motif, the roots of which thus lie in early Christianity. This historical-anthropological investigation of the early Christian Haemorrhoissa motif hence is driven by two primary research ques-tions. The first: why was the early Christian Haemorrhoissa motif so richly represented and did it develop so multifariously? The sec-ond: what did the early Christian constellation of the Haemor-rhoissa motif contribute to the genesis of the vera icon and its con-stitution as image paradigm and, intrinsically linked to this, as anthropological paradigm?

The object of this work is the interdisciplinary dialogue between natural sciences and Christian theology. It studies the theological, epistemological and semantic conditions that make possible an artic-ulation between scientific worldviews and theological discourses. Based on some theological and epistemological conditions, this work proposes a theological method that articulates scientific worldviews into systematic theology through the mediation of philosophy. The method seeks two objectives: (a) that theology remains in its episte-mological boundaries and (b) to respect the autonomy of natural sciences. Finally, the proposed theological method is applied to three examples in dialogue with natural sciences: (i) creation, (ii) human action and (iii) a spiritual contemplation of God’s presence in the world. This book follows the contributions of two major scholars of the Twentieth Century: Jean Ladrière and Xavier Zubiri. Our consider-ations are based on the scholars’ analyses of the plurality of episte-mologies and their analyses of the intellectual act.

Deux éléments essentiels de la pensée de Moingt ont guidé l’auteur vers cette conclusion: son concept d’«humanisme évangé-lique» et son rapport critique à la tradition. Notre hypothèse sou-tient que ces deux facteurs contribuent à retrouver les intuitions de foi sous-jacentes au discours dogmatique traditionnel et qu’ils ins-crivent l’acte théologique dans la raison commune en respectant mieux l’économie de l’Incarnation. L’hypothèse est doublement féconde. Elle fait émerger une raison interne à l’acte de croire chré-tien qui lie le principe d’une «foi critique» et celui d’une «théologie confessante», et elle conforte la pleine appartenance de la théologie aux sciences dites «humaines» comme science herméneutique de l’acte de foi.

Under today’s conditions of globalization and neoliberalism with the consequent commodification of the whole life, poverty, (hetero-)sexism, homophobia, racism, fundamentalism and nationalism (including right-wing extremism) are producing violent exclusions instead of inclusive ideas of community, solidarity, and justice. What answers can the theological perspectives of different religions offer to decrease economic and epistemic violence? Especially liber-ationist, intersectional, feminist, and gender-sensitive approaches have proven to be very conscious of these issues and have contrib-uted immensely to their analysis in theology and religious studies. More recently, postcolonial, post-secular and queer theories have furthered the critical debates in cultural and social analysis and enriched previous approaches. Whereas often only one of these the-oretical approaches is used to frame the analysis, the papers collected in this volume show the surplus of the synergy when all three approaches are used together in the analysis of situations of violence, to develop forms of resistance, and imagine societies of solidarity and justice.

Caring is a moral practice, i.e. a practice in which moral goods are realized. This is one of the critical insights of the ethics of care. The idea that goods are also sacrificed in caregiving, however, is less accepted or downright rejected. Starting off with real life stories, stories from literature and films, this book shows that caregiving entails sacrifices even to the extent of sacrificing the self. This study argues that concepts surrounding care and sacrifice need to be revised and makes proposals for re-conceptualizing the sub-ject’s identity, the intersubjective relation, the socio-political com-munity, and the role of meaning. Using an interdisciplinary approach that draws upon the ethics of care, theology, phenomenol-ogy, political theory and hermeneutics, this book leads to a reap-praisal of (self-)sacrifice as vital to understanding caring.

Van de kartuizers zegt men dat zij een speciale en heilige relatie met boek en bibliotheek hebben. Volgens de master narrative onderschei-den de monniken van Bruno zich in de omvang van hun collecties, de zorg voor het boek en de spirituele representatie van beide. Dat iconische verhaal evoceert enkel de handschriftentijd. De ontdek-king van de zeldzaam gedetailleerde en meticuleuze bibliotheekcata-logus (1742) van de Roermondse kartuis Bethlehem, maakt het mogelijk de mythe van kartuizer en boek te toetsen. Deze studie, in november 2012 in Nijmegen als proefschrift verdedigd, onderzoekt hoe met de handschriften werd omgesprongen, hoe de ontwikkeling van de bibliotheek ná de vijftiende eeuw verliep, en hoe die ontwik-keling beïnvloed werd door de boekenmarkt. De analyse van het achttiende-eeuwse bibliotheekbeheer toont vervolgens hoe de kartui-zers met hun boeken omgingen in een periode die tot nu toe zowel door de wetenschappelijke literatuur als door de bevlogen verhalen veronachtzaamd werd.

Christian Palestinian Aramaic is the name of the Aramaic dialect spoken and written by the Melkite community in Palestine during the first millennium CE. Nearly all of the texts that have survived in this dialect are translations of religious texts originally composed in Greek for the use of members of this community whose only language was Aramaic. The only complete dictionary of this dialect was published over a century ago by Fr. Schulthess in 1903. How-ever, since then, many new texts have been published and many previously known ones have been restudied and republished more accurately by various scholars. The present work has taken into account all of the existing texts as well as the secondary literature in order to make this new dictionary an essential tool for Aramaic scholarship.

Erstmals werden hier alle zwölf Briefe des oberägyptischen Mönchs-vaters Pachom (287–347) auf Deutsch veröffentlicht. Die merkwür-dige „ Geheimschrift “, die mehr als die Hälfte dieser Dokumente durchzieht, hat schon immer Kopfzerbrechen bereitet, angefangen bei Pachoms Mitbrüdern und bei Hieronymus, der sie ins Lateini-sche übersetzt hat, über den Jesuiten Athanasius Kircher (1602–1680), bis hin zu Forschern des zwanzigsten Jahrhunderts wie Emanuele Testa, Ilona Opelt und Hans Quecke. In diesem Buch wird ein Lösungsvorschlag vorgelegt, der in sich konsistent ist und sich in der Durchführung als tragfähig erweist. So tritt neben die Übersetzung der Briefe auch ihre Deutung. Besonders auffallend ist das Buch-stabenquadrat , das sich mitten unter den Briefen befindet, dessen Deutung sich aber gleich-falls an die für die Briefe entwickel-ten Lösungsansätze anschließt. Die Botschaft Pachoms, die in allen Briefen zum Ausdruck kommt, stützt sich auf vier einfache Grund-gedanken: 1. Warnung vor irdischer Gesinnung, 2. In der Bedräng-nis finden wir Rettung, 3. Gottes Gebot besteht in der Bruderliebe, 4. Diese gilt es zu erfüllen angesichts der Ewigkeit. Mit diesen Gedanken ist Pachom verankert in der Mönchstheologie seiner Zeit. Sein Spezifikum als „Vater der Koinobiten“ tritt aber in dem 3. und 4. Grundgedanken in besonders charakteristischer Weise hervor.

Sergio, medico capo di Rēš‘aynā, primo traduttore di Galeno in siriaco ed erudito dai molteplici interessi, si accinse alla traduzione delle opere di Dionigi l’Areopagita nell’ultima fase della sua vita, che si chiuse a Costantinopoli dopo una missione diplomatica a Roma, nel 536. La sua versione degli scritti areopagitici, realizzata pochi anni dopo la comparsa in greco del misterioso corpus pseudepigrafo, è pervenuta in un solo manoscritto, il Sinaitico siriaco 52 del mona-stero di Santa Caterina. Nonostante questo importante testimone sia in parte lacunoso, è stato tuttavia possibile ricostruirlo quasi interamente a partire da frammenti ritrovati al Sinai stesso e in diverse biblioteche europee. Il primo volume presenta l’edizione critica dei tre scritti più specu-lativi di Dionigi: i Nomi divini , la Teologia mistica e le Lettere .Il secondo volume contiene la traduzione italiana della versione di Sergio.

Le règne du souverain Khusro Ier (531-579) fut une période-phare de l’histoire de la Perse sassanide, marquée aussi par des persécutions spo-radiques à l’encontre des chrétiens d’origine zoroastrienne. Parmi ces martyrs figurent de grands personnages de la société civile tels Grigor Pirian-Gusnasp, général en chef des armées du roi, un haut-fonction-naire et juge du nom de Yazd-panah ainsi qu’un notable de la cour, ‘Awira. Le plus illustre fut sans doute le catholicos Mar Abba (540-552), réunificateur de l’Église d’Orient après un schisme de près de vingt-cinq ans, canoniste, exégète, restaurateur de la discipline ecclé-siastique qui avait été affaiblie depuis l’action entreprise par Barsauma en 484, controversiste réputé avec les zoroastriens et les chrétiens syro-orthodoxes, médiateur de paix pour les communautés chrétiennes. Ces textes, mis par écrit par des contemporains des événements, sont les seules hagiographies syro-orientales de cette époque à nous être parvenues en syriaque et présentent une remarquable qualité d’infor-mations sur le paysage socio-religieux et politique de l’Orient au VIe siècle. Une édition critique commentée, accompagnée d’une traduction en français, est pour la première fois proposée à partir des uniques manuscrits existants de Londres, Berlin et du Vatican.

Njáls saga is universally recognised as the greatest and most complex of all the sagas of Icelanders ( Íslendingasögur ). The originality with which the writer composed his narrative has led to its being likened to a novel created by an author who certainly used sources, although identifying which parts of the saga descend from oral, and which from written sources has proved difficult. The ‘Christian back-ground’ of the title of this study refers to the ecclesiastical texts (including Scripture and its exegesis, church liturgy and the liturgi-cal year, and hagiographical and apocryphal writings) which, it is argued, were used by the author of Njáls saga as he both created a bipartite structure, using familiar Christian metaphors to help unify the work; and developed his central thematic concern: that good legal judgement depends upon justice and mercy acting together, as in divine judgement. It is this which finally redeems Skarpheðinn Njálsson.

Through this central question, Affluence and Inequality addresses wider issues of economic growth and decline in an (advanced) pre-industrial economy. Challenging traditional questions with innovative and ground-breaking methods leads to a fresh perspective on the eco-nomic and social history of the early modern Low Countries. Build-ing on individual and household experience, connecting fiscal, financial, occupational and social dots, Jord Hanus shows that the so-called structural decline of the seventeenth-century Southern Low Countries was in fact a next step in a series of structural transforma-tions characterizing the Low Countries during the pre-industrial period. Also, even though poverty was very real for a minority of the urban populace, for the majority, the sixteenth and seventeenth cen-turies brought agreeable living standards. In contrast to a range of southern European cities framed equal in poverty, the urban centres of the Low Countries were both unequal and affluent.

La question de savoir quel type de rapport entretiennent la physique et la métaphysique est au cœur du système philosophique d’Aristote. Ce rapport, toutefois, n’est pas facile à saisir, non seulement parce qu’Aristote ne l’a jamais défini de façon claire, mais parce qu’il est délicat d’en comprendre la nature à la lumière de la théorie de la science exposée dans les Seconds Analytiques . En effet, Aristote affirme d’une part que la métaphysique, conçue comme science uni-verselle, n’a pas de genre-sujet propre, et d’autre part que la phy-sique, quoique seconde par rapport à la métaphysique, en assure le fondement. C’est de ce rapport ambivalent que découle le plus grand nombre d’apories liées au statut épistémologique de chacune des deux sciences comme à la nature de leur rapport. Les contributions réunies dans ce recueil s’inscrivent dans ce contexte théorique com-plexe. Elles portent moins sur la difficulté de comprendre le critère ou les critères d’organisation des traités qu’on appelle Métaphysique et Physique que sur celle de présenter et de justifier l’entrelacement épistémologique de ces deux sciences, conçues comme deux disci-plines unitaires mais plurielles. Sans prétendre reconstruire l’histoire de la question, l’un des enjeux de ce volume fut aussi de dégager, passé le texte même d’Aristote, certains points nodaux de l’histoire grecque et arabe du débat.

Le titre du volume veut souligner les rapports dialectiques, parfois conflictuels et souvent polémiques, que les doctrines de la causalité de cette époque présentent entre elles, aussi bien de manière indépendante que et par rapport à la systéma-tisation aristotélicienne. Les principaux auteurs (Théophraste, Alexandre d’Aphrodise, Plotin) et les principales écoles philoso-phiques (Péripatétique, Stoïcienne, Épicurienne, Sceptique) de l’âge hellénistique et impérial y ont été abordés dans le but de produire un aperçu le plus complet et le plus articulé possible du problème de la causalité à cette époque.

La pratique de l’humilité et le renoncement à l’orgueil, ainsi que la question de l’accord des volontés, sont constants dans les deux expressions d’un amour qui doit conduire au perfectionne-ment des protagonistes humains, ainsi qu’à une joie ineffable. Néan-moins, le cheminement spirituel de Bernard de Clairvaux est par-semé de revirements et de doutes, tandis que les troubadours se révoltent contre Amour, entité universelle, au pouvoir quasi absolu. Dans les deux cas, il ne s’agit pas de l’expression d’un amour fou, balayant les contraintes sociales. Les excès en sont limités par la raison, constitutive de l’âme humaine chez Bernard, et la mezura des poètes. Ce qui n’exclut pas l’expression du désir, désir de Dieu ou désir de la dame. Les troubadours ont aussi chanté la seule satisfac-tion des sens.

This volume contains the first publication in book form of an Eng-lish translation of Thomas Aquinas’s controversial disputed question De unione Verbi incarnati . This disputed question is a remarkable portal into the Angelic Doctor’s theology of the hypostatic union, which is recognized as an area in which Aquinas forged some of his most original and penetrating articulations of the Christian faith. In the De unione Verbi incarnati Aquinas presents in five articles mate-rial that occupies more than eighteen questions in the third part of the Summa theologiae . The attribution of an esse secundarium to Christ, in the fourth article of the De unione , has been the object of intense debate, for it seems to contradict the account of the Summa . In addition to Professor Nutt’s English translation, the volume includes the critical Latin text published by Barbara Bartocci, Klaus Obenauer, and Walter Senner, as well as a substantial introduction. Professor Nutt’s introduction carefully unfolds the historical back-ground, technical concepts, sources, and speculative claims needed for understanding the breadth of the biblical and metaphysical con-templation represented in this work; it also includes a detailed exploration of the debate over the fourth article.

During the last two decades virtue ethics has become the focal point of renewed ethical and theological interest. To lead a good life, it proves useful to watch those who have mastered the art of living. The conviction that living is an art is at the heart of virtue ethics. Living a good life requires exercise, and is a question of acquiring a virtuous character rather than of complying with external ethical and legal rules. This renaissance partly builds on Thomas Aquinas. He in turn recovered Aristotelian, Ciceronian and Augustinian thought on virtue ethics. The interpretation and development of virtues and vices form the core of his authorship, as the secunda pars of his Summa Theologiae readily displays. And yet, the most important virtues for him are not the moral ones, such as Justice, Temperance, Prudence and Fortitude, but those virtues that are both infused by and aimed at God: Faith, Hope and Love. These are virtues that the philosophers of antiquity were not aware of. To account for them, Aquinas had to adapt the classical understanding of virtues. For Aquinas, the moral virtues come to full fruition only when they are embedded in a life before God, a life lived exercising the God given theological virtues. By ignoring Faith, Hope and Love, the present discussion of virtue ethics not only ignores those virtues that were for Aquinas of utmost importance, but also fails to arrive at a com-plete understanding of his view of the moral virtues. The papers contained in this volume address this theme, and were originally presented at the fourth international conference of the Thomas Instituut te Utrecht (Tilburg University), at Utrecht in December 2013.

In der vorliegenden Studie wird untersucht, ob der maßgebliche byzantinische Denker des 14. Jahrhunderts Nikolas Kabasilas, der eine konstruktive Haltung zu den verschiedenen in seiner Zeit aktu-ellen Denktraditionen an den Tag legt, zu Recht als ein Vertreter der eigentümlich byzantinischen Tradition (einschließlich ihrer pala-mitischen Entfaltung) gesehen werden kann. Insbesondere der abendländischen antiken und mittelalterlichen Tradition, vor allem Aristoteles und Thomas von Aquin, steht er offen gegenüber. Wäh-rend diese Traditionen in der Regel mit der byzantinisch-palamiti-schen Tradition als unvereinbar und ihr entgegengesetzt betrachtet werden, zeigt genau der Fall des Kabasilas die Einseitigkeit einer solchen Vorstellung. Das aus den anderen Traditionen übernom-mene Material trägt zur Entfaltung seiner eigenen Philosophie bzw. Theologie bei, ohne damit seinen traditionsgemäßen Grundhal-tungen zu widersprechen. Die Frage nach der Art und Weise, wie Kabasilas diesen synthetischen Vorgang begründet und durchführt, steht im Mittelpunkt dieser Untersuchung.

On y trouve les contributions des meilleurs bergsoniens contempo-rains sur un thème habituellement peu traité: le rôle exact des cours de Bergson et des notes de cours relativement à ses ouvrages publiés. Ce volume vient ainsi combler un manque dans les publications académiques sur Bergson, puisqu’il permet de restituer, dans le sil-lage des travaux engagés il y a deux décennies par Henri Hude, ce qui est trop souvent considéré comme la part la moins importante de sa philosophie. En tentant de faire entendre de nouveau la voix vivante du professeur Bergson, ce travail ne rend donc pas seulement un hommage au maître admiré par tous ses auditeurs, il nous fait entrer, comme par effraction, dans l’atelier où, à n’en pas douter, furent mises au point plusieurs des grandes trouvailles d’un génie philosophique.

Par parole, nous entendons le langage en tant qu’il est nôtre: le langage tel qu’existant. Le propos du livre est d’en scruter la phéno-ménalité et la constitution. La parole apparaît dans le vouloir de parole, dans l’acte de parole, dans l’événement de parole. Elle appa-raît telle quelle dans des actes de langage plus remarquables et plus remarquablement humains que d’autres. Elle apparaît, de plus, comme parole “aussi bien” vive qu’écrite, comme parole faite texte aussi bien que comme parole confiée à la voix. Elle apparaît aussi comme acte de dévoilement et événement de dévoilement, et donc comme liée à une économie de la vérité. Ces quelques affirmations valent dans l’élément de l’a priori: elles valent partout, toujours et pour tous. Encore faut-il leur adjoindre une force épochale. Au temps du nihilisme, la mort de la vérité entraîne une certaine agonie de la parole. La parole ne pourrait certes mourir que si l’homme lui-même mourrait. Mais pour ceux qui savent la parole en crise, il est des paroles qui permettent plus que d’autres de survivre au nihi-lisme. Par exemple l’acte liturgique de parole. Par exemple la parole poétique. Et certainement toute parole liée au travail de la pensée.

Ce volume réunit les cinq communications présentées dans le cadre des «Conférences d’études iraniennes Ehsan et Latifeh Yarshater», organisées en 2014 par l’Unité Mixte de Recherche 7528 «Mondes iranien et indien» au Collège de France à Paris. L’auteur propose un état de la question relative à la culture architecturale et figurative de l’Iran sassanide, sur la base d’une nouvelle évaluation globale des différents témoignages architecturaux et artistiques connus et à la lumière des récentes découvertes publiées en Iran au cours des dern-ières années. Leur objectif, loin de prétendre à l’exhaustivité, est de permettre une meilleure compréhension de l’utilisation des espaces bâtis, des formes d’expression et de communication visuelle et des mécanismes de la production artisanale. Deux chapitres sont dédiés à l’architecture, domaine dans lequel nous sommes encore loin d’avoir atteint un consensus généralisé; un chapitre est consacré à une production artistique fortement liée à l’architecture, celle des stucs. Les deux autres s’attachent à l’approfondissement des aspects technico-stylistiques de types de productions étudiés jusqu’ici majoritairement du point de vue de l’iconographie, ceux des reliefs rupestres et des sceaux.

La liturgie longue est la cérémonie la plus importante de la tradition sacerdotale zoroastrienne. La plupart des textes avestiques qu’on connaît ont été composés pour être récités dans cette liturgie. Elle a acquis la forme, dans laquelle elle est célébrée encore aujourd’hui, vraisemblablement déjà à l’époque achéménide. Comme chaque cérémonie vivante et avec une longue histoire, elle a connu un bon nombre de variantes synchroniques et diachroniques. Néanmoins, les éditions actuelles du texte avestique récité dans cette liturgie ne tiennent compte de son caractère rituel, ni des variantes synchro-niques, ni de l’évolution de la liturgie et de la façon de réciter le récitatif. Dans ce livre, on a essayé de montrer les découvertes les plus récentes qui invalident la méthodologie des éditions actuelles et de proposer quelques alternatives afin de susciter la discussion.

In recent years, exciting new discoveries of inscriptions and archae-ological remains on the Arabian Peninsula have led to a re-evalua-tion of the peoples on the Arabian frontier, which through their extensive contacts with Rome and Persia are now seen as dynamic participants in the Late Antique world. The present volume contrib-utes to this recent trend by focusing on the contrast between the ‘outside’ sources on the peoples of the frontier – the Roman view – and the ‘inside’ sources, that is, the precious material produced by the Arabs themselves, and by approaching these sources within an anthropological framework of how peripheral peoples face larger powers. For the first time, the situation on the Arabian frontier is also compared with that on the southern Egyptian frontier, where similar sources have been found of peoples such as the Blemmyes and Noubades. Thus, the volume offers a richly-documented exam-ination of the frontier interactions in these two vibrant and critical-ly-important areas of the Late Antique East. The book is of interest to anthropologists, archaeologists, historians, Egyptologists, Arabists, epigraphists and papyrologists and, in general, to all scholars work-ing in the period of Late Antiquity.

With few exceptions, previous research on so-called personal religion has focused on hymns preserved on stelae from Deir el-Medina. Whereas their significance as testimony of personal choice and reli-gious belief should not be excluded, the stelae must be understood in their communal cultic context. In order to grasp individual reli-gious practices this book seeks to broaden the scope of analysis and include the archaeological remains from the houses at Deir el-Medina. Instead of establishing individual relationships between the human and divine, it appeared that ‘personal’ religion sought to preserve and maintain family continuity. The ancient Egyptian con-cept of the continuous cycle of creation was thus appropriated at home. Whereas the king guaranteed the order of the cosmos by giving offerings to the gods in the temples, corresponding activities were performed for the well-being of the family at home.

The goddess Mut, consort of Amun-Re at Thebes, is one of the goddesses known as the “Eye of Re” that include Isis, Hathor and Bastet among others. Her temple precinct in South Karnak was a major religious site from at least the early New Kingdom through the early Roman Period, yet Mut remains relatively unknown. While badly damaged, the gate in the Mut Temple’s First Pylon bears important religious texts relating to the goddess and her cult as well as remains of Ramesside scenes recarved in the Ptolemaic Period. This study of the gateway and its texts, edited by R.A. Fazz-ini and J. van Dijk, includes a description of the gateway’s architec-ture (W.H. Peck), a detailed study of the figural decoration (R.A. Fazzini) and transcriptions, translations and analyses of the inscrip-tions (J.-C. Goyon, J. van Dijk, H. te Velde). Two appendices deal with the recarved Ramesside texts (J. van Dijk) and aspects of the goddess (J.-C. Goyon).

The Fayum is a large depression in the western desert of Egypt, receiving its water directly from the Nile. In the early Ptolemaic period the agricultural area expanded a great deal, new villages were founded and many Greeks settled here. When villages on the out-skirts were abandoned about AD 300-400, houses and cemeteries remained intact for centuries. Here were found thousands of papyri, ostraca (potsherds) and hundreds of mummy portraits, which have made the area famous among classicists and art historians alike. Most papyri and ostraca are now scattered over collections all over the world. The sixth volume of Collectanea Hellenistica presents 145 reconstructed archives originating from this region, including pri-vate, professional, official and temple archives both in Greek and in native Demotic.

DOUBLE NAMES AND ELITE STRATEGY IN ROMAN EGYPT

In this detailed study of double names in Egypt, Yanne Broux explores how the age-old tradition of polyonymy flourished under Roman rule. While in the Ptolemaic period double names were mainly bilingual and were thus connected to the concept of ethnic-ity, they underwent a significant change starting around the middle of the first century AD and culminating in the third. Broux argues that this shift from Ptolemaic Greek-Egyptian to Roman Greek-Greek double names was the outcome of two structures introduced by the Romans: the strict social hierarchy on the one hand, and the municipalization of the metropoleis , which led to the rise of the local elite, on the other. This resulted in a strong emphasis on Greek identity and descent, and double names lent themselves exception-ally well for this purpose. They bring to the fore the importance that the local elite attached to Greek identity and descent, and, perhaps, as a wink to the (forbidden?) tria nomina , provided a means to distinguish their prominent bearers from the rest of the Egyptian population.

This volume contains the proceedings of the twenty-first annual British Museum Egyptology Colloquium, which was the first in the series dedicated to post-pharaonic Egypt. The volume investigates continuity and change in the archaeological record in the First Mil-lennium AD, focusing on the transitions to and from Late Antiquity (AD 250-800), when Egypt’s population became Christian and, later, Islam was introduced. The fourteen contributors, representing the overlapping disciplines of Egyptology, Archaeology and Art His-tory with specialisations in the pharaonic, Roman and Late Antique periods, present the results of new archaeological research at a range of sites currently under investigation. Seeking to identify trends and compare results, the volume is organised according to four major themes: 1) settlements, 2) cemeteries, 3) settling rock-cut tombs and quarries and 4) temple-church-mosque. Many of the contributions address adaptive reuse of earlier architecture, the recycling of earlier monuments as building material (i.e. spolia), or both. Traditionally neglected by modern scholars in favour of other periods in Egypt’s long history, the study of First Millennium AD archaeology offers increasingly better opportunities to evaluate both Egypt’s distinctive-ness and its role within the wider Mediterranean region.

MARDUK-REMANNI Local Networks and Imperial Politicsin Achaemenid Babylonia

Marduk-remanni was a Babylonian man who lived in the provincial town of Sippar during the first decades of Persian rule in Mesopo-tamia (second half of the sixth century BC). His archive of c. 187 cuneiform texts was found in 1881 during excavations carried out on behalf of the British Museum, but since then it has received little attention. On first sight, the historical relevance of Marduk-re-manni’s records seems minimal. They relate to his private assets, business enterprises, and legal concerns – matters that barely seem to transcend the personal and local spheres. But upon closer scru-tiny, it becomes clear that Marduk-remanni was at the centre of a far-flung personal network and that his life, despite his having lived far from the political centre, reflects many of the developments and changes taking place at the highest imperial level. He was a child when Cyrus the Great of Persia conquered Babylonia, and although this regime change caused little upheaval outside the political arena at first, by the time of Marduk-remanni’s death several decades later, the world of his childhood had changed. His life had taken a com-pletely different course than that of his father and grandfather. He had traveled near and far, visiting the Persian court at Susa on sev-eral occasions. No longer were the horizons of his world confined to the Babylonian heartland, as they had been for his father and grandfather. Marduk-remanni was born in provincial Babylonia, but he died as a citizen of a world empire. This book traces the social, economic and political dynamics that transformed his life.

Cet ouvrage est un exposé exhaustif des DUMU.LUGAL “fils royaux” de facture hittite, louvite et hourrite dans les textes et sceaux d’Ougarit, d’Emar et de Bogazköy. Ce terme DUMU.LUGAL est analysé dans différentes langues (sumérien, hittite, akkadien, ouga-ritique, louvite, hourrite et en écriture hiéroglyphique hittito-lou-vite) au travers d’une série de personnes aux activités diverses dans la société. Ces personnes portent différents titres ou exercent des fonctions comme scribe, berger, aurige, seigneur/maître du Hatti pour ne citer que ceux-ci. Parmi eux, la plupart appartiennent au domaine administratif de la gestion d’un état ou d’une province et au domaine militaire. Leur étude a permis d’établir des équivalences entre le cunéiforme et les hiéroglyphes hittito-louvites ou entre deux langues. Le rôle et la place que tiennent ces DUMU.LUGAL dans la société sont ainsi mis en évidence. Une comparaison est faite entre le DUMU.LUGAL qui se lit REX.FILIUS en hiéroglyphe hittito- louvite et les termes TARTENNU (akkadien), tukhkanti (hittite), utryn (ougaritique), PRINCEPS (hiéroglyphe) signifiant le «prince héritier». Ce terme DUMU.LUGAL se dit MAR SHARRI en akka-dien, bn mlk en ougaritique et se lit REX.FILIUS en écriture hiéro-glyphique hittito-louvite. Mais nous ignorons son équivalence en louvite et en hourrite. Néanmoins en hittite comme peut-être en louvite la lecture pourrair être khassant- (participe de khas- «ouvrir») = le «natif», le «bien-né». En fait, khassu- (adjectif substantivé) désigne spécifiquement le chef d’une région en tant qu’il est le natif par excellence. De ce fait, ce terme khassant- est proposé comme lecture hittite probable et peut-être louvite de DUMU.LUGAL.

The volume contains studies dealing with Mediterranean history in the first millennium B.C., based mainly on epigraphic data. Chap-ter I concerns the Philistines and the kingdom of “terra firma”, established by “Sea Peoples” on the Lower and Middle Orontes and in the Aleppo area, showing their Mycenaean background. Their obvious relations with the Phoenicians lead to the presentation of the newly identified material referring to the goddess Tanit, best known from Carthage, but coming from the Levant. Information provided by classical sources is then discussed in two chapters deal-ing with Herodotus and with later sources giving some information on Phoenician and Punic law and jurisprudence. The second part of the book consists in an analysis of Phoenician, Punic, and Neo-Pu-nic inscriptions which so far have not been fully deciphered or inter-preted. Most of them come from North Africa, but inscriptions from Ibiza and Sardinia are examined as well. Some of them offer the possibility of better understanding the molk -sacrifice and its human implications, especially in the second and first centuries B.C. Attention is paid also to the meaning and the implications of some personal names appearing in those inscriptions.

In 1996, the University of Malta renewed excavations at the site for ten seasons, uncovering Neolithic and Late Bronze Age occupation levels, and substantial deposits associated with ritual offerings of Punic date. This volume is the first monograph of the final publication of the excavations. It provides an account of those excavations and of the studies which accompa-nied them, including the lithic assemblages, the figurative rep-resentations, scarabs and amulets, the worked stone, the coins, and environmental analyses. It forms a companion volume to the second monograph, which reports on the pottery and the inscribed pottery.

It comprises detailed descriptions and illustrations of the coin issues struck by the Greek cities situated on the western, southern and eastern shores of the Black Sea up to Roman times, thereby completing the publica-tion of coin material from the circumpontic area stored in the Push-kin Museum. Despite the relative small number of coins (fewer than 500 pieces) there are quite rare specimens among them originating from important pre-revolutionary private collections such as those of Rozanov and Bobrinskii. Most of the coins have never been pub-lished before and will be of special interest to scholars.

This is a catalogue of church, chapel and monastery mosaic pave-ments discovered within the borders of Israel and the Palestinian Territories (Roman Palestine). Chronologically, it spans the early 4th to 8th centuries, the latter period seemingly designating the cessation of mosaic manufacture in early Christian edifices in Pales-tine based on current archaeological findings. Sites are arranged alphabetically and according to the four Roman provinces that encompassed the region, and to which it is believed each originally belonged. The primary name chosen for each site (in most cases) correlates with the site name used in the indispensable gazetteer Tabula Imperii Romani Iudaea Palaestina (1994), allowing for rela-tively simple site identification and cross-referencing. In order to simplify the mosaic design descriptions, the catalogue utilises a sys-tem of geometric pattern coding. For each site, a map reference is given for the Israel Grid, followed by a brief outline of its excavation or survey, a thorough description of the pavements including the coding system, inscriptions (if present), a commentary including proposed dates (if given) and bibliography. The indexes include a concise list of occurrences for each pattern code, figural designs and iconoclastic damage; for inscriptions, ecclesiastical titles, named mosaicists and cited provincial dating eras.

Le présent volume, issu d’un col-loque international qui s’est tenu à Reims, examine ce que fut le secret durant les XVIIe et XVIIIe siècles, tout en ouvrant l’étude à des textes originels comme le Roman du Graal , à la période roman-tique avec Senancour, Chateaubriand et Stendhal, voire au XXe siècle. Les contributions déclinent les diverses formes du secret: discrétion, dissimulation, énigme, mystère, implicite, clandestinité, espionnage. Dans la première partie, elles touchent à l’anthropologie et au rapport qu’entretiennent le politique et la morale. Une esthé-tique du secret s’affirme quand les poètes, les peintres et les drama-turges sollicitent la participation du spectateur. Le «plaisir secret» se charge alors de valeur positive. Les auteurs, les libraires et les jour-nalistes n’ignorent pas la valeur pragmatique du secret. La seconde partie du volume porte sur les fictions. Le roman de cette époque élabore des dispositifs ingénieux pour exprimer ce qui est à la fois montré et caché. Il circonscrit le secret dans son ambiguïté, sans pouvoir le dire vraiment. Quel que soit son intérêt au Grand Siècle, le secret d’amour tend à se vider de son contenu pour mieux éclairer les processus de communication. Le roman du siècle suivant hésite entre la dissimulation et la transparence; avec le conte, il use de l’énigme et de la mystification pour mener un combat idéolo-gique et pour interroger l’inconscient jusque dans l’érotisme et l’in-ceste.

Jud, du monumental Sprach- und Sachatlas Italiens und der Südschweiz (1928-1940), Jaberg fut aussi – comme en témoignent les articles réunis dans les deux volumes de ses Sprachwissenschaftliche Forschungen und Erlebnisse (1937 et 1965) – un spécialiste de sémantique et d’onomasiologie, un dialectologue de terrain attentif aux phéno-mènes de variation, un précurseur dans le domaine des études de morphophonologie verbale, un linguiste praticien engagé dans des débats avec ses maîtres et collègues dialectologues (L. Gauchat, J. Gilliéron), ou avec des philologues idéalistes (K. Vossler, E. Lerch), des philosophes et psychologues du langage (A. Marty, W. Wundt), et des linguistes théoriciens (F. de Saussure, Ch. Bally, H. Schuchardt). Les contributions dans ce volume couvrent l’ensemble de l’œuvre très vaste de Jaberg, s’étendant sur plus d’un demi-siècle. Le volume, contenant une dizaine d’illustrations (photos, cartes, dessins, …), se clôt par un «Dossier K. Jaberg» fournissant la bibliographie com-plète de l’auteur et un choix de textes peu connus. D’un autre côté, l’attention portée à nombre de petits cours d’eau oubliés, souvent de dénomi-nation dialectale, restitue leur mémoire, les introduit dans la recherche internationale et contribue à la sauvegarde d’une part méconnue du patrimoine wallon. “Mit Lust und Liebe für die Lust und Liebe” ist ein Sammelband der wichtigsten Beiträge, die Prof. Dr. med. Hans Molinski in ver-schiedenen Zeitschriften publiziert hat. In Deutschland haben die gynäkologische Psychosomatik und die Sexualmedizin wesentliche Impulse von Hans Molinski erhalten. Ihm verdanken sie auch eine Blütezeit, die leider wieder im Abklingen ist. 1966 initiierten Masters und Johnson dank ihrer Laboruntersuchun-gen ein neues therapeutisches Verfahren mit systematisch program-mierten Übungen. Molinski modifizierte das Verfahren und betonte immer wieder, dass die sexuelle Physiologie im Wesentlichen Lust- und Liebespsychophysiologie ist. Sexuelle Störungen sind psychoso-matische Störungen: PatientInnen oder Paare mit psychosomati-schen Störungen sind nicht (mehr) oder noch nicht fähig, ihren Körper als Lust- und Beziehungsleib miteinander zu erleben.
