Order of Operation

• To evaluate an expression with more than one operation

1. Parentheses (), brackets [], Braces {}, and fraction bar – grouping symbols. Do operations within grouping symbols in the order of steps 2, 3, and 4 below

2. Exponents

3. Multiply and divide – do both operations as they appear, working left to right

4. Add and subtract – do both, working left to right

• To solve equations in these forms:1.Eliminate the addition or subtraction by

subtracting or adding the same number to each side

2.Eliminate multiplication and division by dividing or multiplying the same number to each side

3.Check the solution by substituting it in the original equation
