A conference about language

It is a great pleasure for us to present the international conference ‘The Power of the Word’.

For many years there has been a vivid focus on speech and language in the pedagogic and also in the social arenas as a way of communi-cating and also as an artistic expression. There are many poetry readings, poetry slam performances, and storytelling is also very popular.

But what is so important about speech and language? - is it not enough to be able to understand your partner of communication? How does language influence us?

The preparing group has been working with Rudolf Steiner's lectures on language as a part of the human being and as a way to self development, and last but not least about language as a being in itself.

Where does the language come from and where does it go? It is a question we are justified in asking ourselves, when we work with it. And this is what we are going to work with during the conference, practically and artistically and also in the lectures. How can we in a living way work with the language in school, in kindergarten, in the creche and in our every day life?

Language of the conference:

The languages of the conference are German and English: If you do not understand German, it is possible to have the lectures as well as the workshops translated into English. For this purpose we have experienced translaters. Please put a cross against it on your enrollment form.

Workshops:

1) Speech Formation and Linguistics. How can speech formation and the knowledge of the workings of language support and inspire each other?

On the physical plane there is no language as such, there are only specific realizations of language. To-day, as written language is disintegrating and new modes of digital communication are taking over, it is not enough to refer to 'classical' forms of language. We need to ask anew and with sharpened perspicacity: What 'language' are we talking about? What do human beings, particularly children, need for a healthy development? What are the things we must learn to grasp and to handle with increasing perspicacity in teaching, therapy, and art in order that movement may impel speech and speech impel thinking? 2) We will work with the artistic elements of teaching on the basis of speech formation. We will work with texts for children and youths from 5 to 18 years in the German language. Joy and enthusiasm will accompany us during our work. Xandor Koesen-York.

3) Which possibilities do we have to get near the life of the language? Among other things we will look at the origin of the words and their way into the language of today. Stephan Frister.

4) Cultivation of speech and language for the small children. We will work with how to strengthen the richness of inner images and words as well as the articulation of the children through movement. Also we will see how we can become models in inner images and speech. Dorthe Rosendahl.

5) Possibilities of movability through language. In our everyday life we mostly use the language as a means of communication, but perhaps we would be more mobile and imaginative if we could work deeper into the elements of language? We will be working with these thoughts through poems and for example the Finnish Kalevala. Oliver Ifill.Lecturers:

Nicolai Petersen, born 1952 in Gießen/Hessen, studied Germanic languages, Slav languages, Finn-Ugric languages and music science and worked as a Russian and German teacher in Waldorf Schools in Finland, Germany, Russia and Italy. Teaching activity at the university, the Goethe-Institute, Snellman-Highschool/Helsinki. From 1992 to 2004 leader of the Seminar of Waldorf Pedagogy in St. Petersburg. Now Russian teacher in the Widar-Schule, Bochum. Publications on

teaching Russian, English and German in the Waldorf School as well as on questions of linguistics in the light of anthroposophy.

Xandor Koesen-York was born in Holland. He teaches children and youths at the ages 3-20 years mostly in Germany at different Waldorf Schools, and also works with disabled children. In cooperation with doctors and other therapists (Therapeutikum Krefeld) he works therapeutically with adults and teaches rhetorics.

Stephan Frister was born in Germany in 1957. He became a priest of the Christian Community Germany in 1990 and in the Christian Com-munity in Aarhus / Denmark in 2003.

Dorthe Rosendahl was born in Aarhus/Denmark in 1957. She is a speech formationist, therapist and a Waldorf Kindergarten teacher. She teaches children and adults. She is a member of ‘Eurytmiensemblet Ildfuglen’ as speech formationist, is a storyteller and reciter of poetry and a member of the Storyteller- and musictrio ‘Musik og Poesi’.

Bente Moeller was born in 1954 in Aarhus/Denmark. She was educated in Switzerland as a eurythmist at the Goetheanum/Dornach by Elena Zuccoli. Has since then worked as a stage artist at the Goetheanum Stage and in recent years in Denmark in the ‘Eurytmiensemblet Ildfuglen’. For a number of years she taught and led the 4 year education of eurythmy in Aarhus.

Oliver Ifill was born in Germany and now lives in Finland. He is a speech formationist from the speech formation school in Helsinki and a social pedagogue from Sylvia-Koti in Lahti and a speech formation therapist from Dornach, Switzerland, has a master degree from the Steiner-Highschool Berle in Oslo, Norway. Teaches in the school of speech formation in Helsinki and at the home for disabled persons ‘Sylvia-Koti’ in Lahti, both in Finland.

How do I get to Audonicon?Public transport: Trains leave from Copenhagen Main Station, Copenhagen Airport as well as from Frederikshavn (ferry from Oslo). From Aarhus Airport: Take shuttlebus to Aarhus Main Station, to Audonicon in Skanderborg with bus no. 200. From Billund Airport: Take shuttlebus to Skanderborg Station. From Skanderborg Station take bus 200 (direction Skejby) from the opposite side of the road. Get off at the 4 th stop, walk back across the street and left on the path to Audonicon (the roundish big white building). You can walk, about half an hour, from the station or go by taxi for about 150 DKK.
