Why Ammonia Free?The simple answer is this – Ammonia damages the hair and is toxic to the environment. Ammonia is known to cause bronchial system problems and other related illnesses. Recent research has found that 50% to 60% of clients suffer such negative effects from ammonia based color services. Each complaint is individual and varies from slight to severe. Some of these include headaches, foggy feeling and nausea. To Hairdressers these toxic effects compounded over time can be career ending. Thankfully, Organic Color Systems offers you a much healthier and better performing option. Developed in Great Britain and released in 1990, Organic Color Systems was first introduced in the United States in 2003. Now thousands of hairdressers in over forty countries use this professional ammonia free hair color line.

How Organic Color Works The oil base of Organic Color Systems is alkaline so it raises the pH of the hair, but at the same time it acts as a conditioning agent softening the hair’s cuticle and allowing it to be opened with gentle heat. This eliminates the need for ammonia. In traditional hair color, ammonia blows open the cuticle taking the hair to a pH of 10.5 - 12. Organic Color Systems uses a moisturizing oil base with an extremely low amount of coconut derived ethanolamine to open the cuticle to a pH level of 9. This same oil base contains Oleic Acid which comes from olive oil and is used specifically to neutralize any residual ethanolamine during the coloring process. You are then able to close the cuticle back down with our Organic Care line & return the hair to its ideal pH of 4.5 - 5.5. (See “The pH Factor” on page 4.) Most other non-ammonia or “natural” color lines replace ammonia with a very high percentage of ethanolamine only and use no other alkaline base. So the same amount of damage is occurring. Because we have eliminated ammonia which is corrosive, we are able to use a much lower percentage of PPD’s. OCS colors contain and average of 0.6% PPD’s. This is in sharp contrast to ammoniated colors which usually contain 3-6% PPD’s. Plus, there are colors in this line that contain absolutely no PPD’s or PTD’s.

The pH FactorOrganic Color Systems does not take your client’s hair as far from its natural or isometric point on the pH scale like ammonia colors and other chemical services will do. Hair’s isometric (natural) pH falls between 4.5 - 5.5.

Then by using the Organic Care Systems wet line after your Organic Color Systems service, you are able to return the hair to its correct pH and fully close the cuticle. Since you are able to fully close the hair’s cuticle back down after coloring by using Organic Care Systems, you can Significantly reduce color fade. This is just one of the ways the Organic lines work together as a system.

Ammonia will also open up the pores of the skin and staining can occur. But since Organic Color Systems is not made with ammonia little to no staining occurs.

By getting rid of ammonia, skin irritation and burning on the scalp is a thing of the past. Additionally, the peroxide used in our developers is pharmaceutical grade which means it’s the same as that found in eye drops and therefore gentler than the industrial grade peroxide found in most other color lines.

Ammonia degrades the hairs protein structure which can lead to banding, hot roots and colors that fade off tone. With Organic Colors Systems there is no banding or hot roots and colors fade on tone!

Organic Color Systems creates a more pleasant salon experience since there are no harmful ammonia fumes that can make breathing difficult and irritate the eyes, scalp or both.

The main pH adjuster used in minimal concentration is ethanolamine naturally derived from coconut. This adjuster is then suspended in a soy based moisturizing gel base that is infused with oleic acid which comes from pure olive oil.

Certified organic chamomile (Anthemis Nobilis) and certified organic comfrey (Symphytum Officinale) provide anti-inflammatory properties and natural soothing.

Redheads will rejoice! Our Copper and Red series can accomplish any look that your clients desire from very natural strawberry blondes to intense auburns. It starts with the Copper range. These colors are tonally aligned to the Natural Base shades offering the middle of the copper/red spectrum running from 4CR to 8CR. For lighter, more metallic coppers there is the Bright Copper range that is 6BC to 8BC. The Red Copper range adds more red and moves down a level from the BC’s, with shades 5RC to 7RC. Get Funky! Our range of Brighteners are designed to be used with any Organic Color Systems color to add vibrance or can be applied on pre-lightened hair for funky fashion colors. These shades are 100% ammonia free permanent oxidative hair colors and with the exception of Violet they contain no PPD’s. The Brighteners are not direct dyes and contain no base tones. They are pure color. As such they need to be mixed with an activator and then processed. The brighteners come in four tantalizing tones: Extra Bright Orange XBO, Extra Bright Red XBR, Extra Bright Violet XBV and Extra Bright Yellow XBY. No Limits Orange, Red, Violet and Yellow are semi-permanent hair colors that can be applied as an in-salon service or they can be sold as a retail product for your clientele to use at home. No Limits shades typically last between 6 to 12 washes. For a high-contrast fashion result, apply the color to pre-lightened hair. No Limits are 100% ammonia free and contain NO PPD or PTD pigments. Activate it Your Way Recognizing that each colorist works differently Organic Color Systems offers a complete range of hair color activators that vary by both their peroxide concentrations and their viscosity. They are all completely intermixable. This allows the colorist to determine the correct amount of lift and desired consistency that is best for their formulation. Our activators are made with only the purist pharmaceutical grade hydrogen peroxide, 100% demineralized purified water, and certified organic ingredients. The Purest Care Available for Professionals The ingredients contained in the Organic Care Systems range have been carefully selected to create products which are both highly effective and gentle to the hair. Calming and soothing is made possible by chamomile and aloe vera. The moisturizing and conditioning action is taken care of by jojoba seed oil, sweet almond oil and hydrolyzed wheat protein, which also helps to strengthen the hair. UV protection is provided by sunflower oil. In addition, we use vitamin B5, which adds body to the hair without adding weight and vitamin E, which is a natural anti-oxidant.

In-Salon Diagnostics: Analyze & OptimizeA Wet Stretch Test is the most effective way to determine the condition of the hair and how to treat it. The test also educates your clients and boosts retail sales. First, Separate about 10 strands of hair and spray with water.

Next, Hold hair firmly between both hands. Gently pull hair away from your client’s head. Healthy hair should stretch about 30% of its length and then return, like an rubber band. Use Status Quo Shampoo on healthy hair.

Hair which stretches but does not return to its previous length is weak in protein. Use Power Build Shampoo and Reconstructor on hair that is weak to rebuild protein and to add strength.

Hair which is tight and does not stretch is low in moisture.Use Aqua Boost Shampoo and Reconstructor on coarse or dry hair to soften the cuticle and prepare it for salon services.

Hair which stretches and then breaks is low in both protein and moisture.Use Power Build Shampoo and Revamp in this situation to repair the breakage and to add strength.
