About “Art of Living (AOL)”

Importance of Art of Living at Institutions

The influence and complexity of western civilization, whether one likes it or not, has essentially spread across the entire world. Children and youth are our future but society is in doldrum. Our older generation feels nowhere. True religion must bring real and positive change in our lives. Paramhansa Yogananda declared, “Let us separate the dross of society/religion by burning it in the furnace of scientific investigation and realization and try their practical applications”.Many of our great saints found that meditation practice improves cognition, memory and concentration, and the saint Yogananda called it the ancient Indian science of meditation. It is stated by Naraswami Devashri (TOI, 25.09.1971 in the autobiography of Yogi Paramhansa Yogananda), the sage who brought ‘Kriya’ back to human kind in 1963, Mahavatar Babaji, being aware of the trend of modern times, proposed that meditation is essential to have a rich, fulfilling and successful life. In this face of many incentium, modern technology causes much stress and restlessness. Exercises in different forms are also required to cure many ailments. In 1982, Sri Sri Ravishankar propelled Kriya yoga to Sudarshan Kriya – The Art of Living (without having any religious stigma). Shri Shri Ravishankar established the Art of Living as a scientific, educational and humanistic non-governmental organization that works for all. In 1982, Economic & Social Council of United Nations recognized this and about 155 countries are implementing it. Many institutes in USA and India included it in their school/college academic curriculum. Even Yogi Naraswami Devarshi wrote that having worked closely with thousands of Kriya yogi over the years, she found that Kriya yoga done properly makes one more wise loving parents, a true friend, a kind teacher, more compassionate person and even a more astute business person. Reasoning answer is simple and essential part of truth as founded by great saint Patanjali in his ‘Yogasutra’. The control of the life-forces is also the reason why great saints can remain unruffled under all conditions.Any science must be proven by experimentation and done by many things in our lives – diet, exercise and lifestyle. As recent studies show, we may find that our brain cells can be changed along with our entire outlook of life.

The students are spending most of their valuable time in the institutions under the care of teachers. Even sometimes students spend more time with their teachers than with parents. In view of the above considerations, AICTE has sponsored a program on AOL for our youths and the faculty has to play a big role as academic teacher and even as peripatetic teacher. To conclude – a quoted adage for teachers: “Learning begins at cradle and ends at grave”. So, teachers have to learn the skills to educate, manage, motivate, inspire students and hence, this program seems to be very essential to the teachers.
