It is always an interesting day as the students listen to the story of Irish monastic life and spirituality. I am always amazed at how the things that were relevant to communities in the 6 th or 7 th century have relevance for us today. I always take the students into the Church of St. Kieran, it is just alongside the Church of St. Kevin. The closeness of the two churches is richly symbolic. As they sit along the wall of St. Ciaran’s I tell them that the reason why the two Churches are so close together is that both men shared a rich and valued friendship. They were Anam Charas as we say in Gaelic or as we translate, Soul Friends. I ask the students to think of people who are their soul friends and as they are away from home they may be more acutely aware of those who they consider to be their Anam Chara’s. A silence descends as they think of people who number as special among all the friends they have. I’m sure they miss them and look forward to meeting with them when they return home. May God bless those who allow us to be the person that we need to be at any particular point in time … it is not everyone who allows us to be ourselves.
