destination.

TheCommission’sinvestmentinpublicarthelpsensurethebeautyofourpublicplacesandourneighborhoods.WhenartisintegraltoSanDiego’sbuiltenvironmentitbecomespartofthefabricofourcommunityandencouragescivicengagementandcreativity.

MORE CreativeIndustries–BusinessandEmploymentintheArtsSanDiego’screativeeconomyisoneofthemajorstrengthsofourcityandourregion.ResearchconductedbyAmericansfortheArtsoffersanotherapproachtounderstandingthescopeandimportanceoftheartstooureconomy.Thecreativeindustriesplayanimportantroleinbuildingandsustainingeconomicvibrancythroughthegrowthofarts-centricbusinesses.

Theseindividualsandbusinessesrangefrommuseums,symphoniesandtheaterstofilm,architecture,designcompaniesandevenmusicalinstrumentmanufacturing.Theyemploypeople,spendmoneylocally,generategovernmentrevenue,andareacornerstoneoftourismandeconomicdevelopment.

TheSanDiegoregionishometo4,631arts-relatedbusinesses,bothforprofitandnonprofit,ranking7thamongthetop10largestUScities–aheadofSeattle,Phoenix,DenverandPhiladelphia.Thesebusinessesemployover22,500people,rankingus9thoverallinthecountry.

Businessleaderssaycreativityisofhighimportancewhenhiring—72%ofcompaniesthatgivetotheartsrecognizethatitstimulatescreativethinking,problemsolvingandteambuilding.

MORE CulturalTourists–ArtsandCultureasvisitorAttractionsEconomicactivitycreatedbytourismanddollarscomingintoourlocaleconomyfromoutsidetheregionalsoimpactjobsandattractrevenue.AstrategicmarketingpartnershipwiththeSanDiegoConventionandvisitorsBureau,providesaframeworkforlinkingtheartstotourismanddrawingvisitorstotheregion.

AccordingtotheSanDiegovisitorProfileStudyconductedbyCICResearch,touristswhoparticipatedinanartsandcultureactivityarethosewhoarehereformoredays(3.8vs1.8daysforallvisitors)andnearly60%ofthesevisitorsusehotelaccommodations.Inaddition,thesevisitorsspend$561pertripascomparedwiththeaveragetourist’s$235.
