Central Coast Section is an affiliate member of the California Music Educators Association. CMEA is a Federated unit of NAfME: National Association for Music Education.
Purpose
Membership is open to all music educators working in public and private schools, colleges and universities in California. The purposes of the association are: (1) to promote access to a sequential music education for all Pre-K through Grade 12 students taught by fully qualified music educators; (2) to support and improve existing music programs; (3) to promote quality pre-service and in-service music teacher preparation programs; and, (4) to create a greater awareness of the value of music education through partnerships with other associations and advocacy among state and local agencies.
Welcome to the 2016 CCS Honor Concert. On behalf of the CMEA Central Coast Section Board of Directors, congratulations to the top young musicians from four counties who perform today and to those who made the extraordinary effort to audition for these high caliber ensembles. Our Honors Concerts are the largest events we produce annually, building cohesion of pedagogy in the art form and establishing a high standard for music education within our section.
Students are able to expand their study of music with the support of their communities, families, teachers and school administrators by auditioning or participating in this event. Thank you for valuing arts education by supporting a young person’s journey to this stage. Each note represents the hard work and
dedication of the student musicians as well as the people behind them who help see potential and value in this life long skill that preserves culture and tradition.
The guest conductors have selected and prepared some challenging and engaging repertoire while winning the respect and hearts of our Central Coast students and educators. Our students have built new connections with peer musicians and have grown as young adults while preparing for this event -- all in less than 48 hours! Thorough preparation by the conductors and teachers, and diligent work done by the students combine to bring an extra sense of refinement to the concert. If you agree, thank an administrator for keeping music in our schools, and thank a teacher for supporting the professional membership of CMEA/NAf ME.
Today’s concert is being digitally recorded and will be available for purchase. We encourage you to take advantage of this opportunity to obtain a professional recording that preserves and documents this accomplishment for your student musician and family. Dr. David Arrivée, originally from Monterey, CA, has been fortunate to work with a variety of ensembles as a conductor, pianist and clarinetist. He is currently the Director of the Cal Poly Symphony and an Associate Professor in the Cal Poly Music Department, where he teaches theory and coaches chamber ensembles. He is also the Assistant Conductor of the San Luis Obispo Mozart Festival. Before moving to the Central Coast, he served as the Assistant Conductor of the Chicago Youth Symphony Orchestras and the Elmhurst Symphony Orchestra, and taught music theory at Northwestern University. He has guest conducted the Green Lake Festival Orchestra, Princeton University Orchestra, Auros Ensemble for New Music, Bradley University Orchestra, South Bend Youth Symphony Orchestra, and the Northwestern University Philharmonic.
Arrivée received a bachelor's degree from Princeton University and a master of music degree in orches-tral conducting from Boston University, where he studied with David Hoose. While in Boston, Arrivée was active as a clarinetist in the Boston University Symphony Orchestra, as a vocal accompanist and as a conductor. He served as the assistant for the Boston University Symphony Orchestra and the March Chapel Choir of Boston University, conducted the Auros Ensemble for New Music, and sang with the Cantata Singers. During a period abroad, Arrivée lived and worked in Leipzig, Germany, where he served as a pianist and conductor for the Schola Cantorum. He moved to Chicago to pursue a doctorate in orches-tral conducting at Northwestern University with Victor Yampolsky, and wrote a dissertation on the use of other arts in educational concerts.
He has participated as a conducting fellow at the Tanglewood Music Center, as a pianist in the Schumann Duos Program at The Britten-Pears School for Advanced Musical Study, England, and as a con-ductor at the International Workshop for Conductors in the Czech Republic. He has studied under Robert Spano, Larry Rachleff, Gustav Meier, Zdenek Macal, and Charles Bruch, among others.
He lives near the ocean with his wife, Dr. Janet Joichi, their son, and two labrador retrievers.

Dr. John Graulty has served as Dean of Visual, Applied, and Performing Arts at Cabrillo College since 2011. As a former US Air Force conductor who has worked in mediums ranging from jazz to opera, John has conducted at the Leipzig Gewandhaus, Royal Albert Hall in London, and the Red Army Theater in Moscow. He also conducted President Bill Clinton in his brief guest appear-ance with the US Air Force Band in Europe. He has guest conducted the CMEA Central Coast Section Middle School Honor Band in 2013, the Cabrillo Col-lege Symphonic Wind Ensemble, the Wroclaw Philharmonic, Harlem Festival Orchestra, Goshen College Orchestra, and on Latvian National Radio. His clarinet performances have been heard on NPR and PBS, in Spoleto, Italy, at the 1984 International Clarinet Competition in London (where he was the only American semi-finalist), at “ClarinetFest 2001” in New Orleans, and with the
Indianapolis Chamber Orchestra, Opera, and Ballet Internationale. He has taught master classes in clarinet and conducting at the Latvian Music Academy, for the Ministry of Education in Singapore, and at the Bos-ton University Tanglewood Institute’s "Clarinet Workshop 2005." His article on avoiding podium-centered rehearsals was published in the peer-reviewed Music Educators Journal ( June 2010).
Dr. Graulty is a graduate of the Peabody Conservatory, New England Conservatory, and Columbia Uni-versity – Teachers College, where he completed his Doctorate in Higher Education in 1989. He is married to Susan Ellman Graulty, VAPA/GATE Coordinator for the Pajaro Valley Unified School District in Watsonville, California, and they have four beautiful daughters: Valerie, Stephanie, Natalie, and Michelle. John is a member of the College Music Society and International Council of Fine Arts Deans and serves on the board of the Arts Council of Santa Cruz County as well as the Steering Committee for the Santa Cruz County Alliance for Arts Education. Past appointments include Dean of Fine Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences at Merced College (CA), Music Department Chair at Delaware State University and Goshen College in Indiana, and Director of Bands and Director of Instrumental Music, respectively, at Butler University and the University of Indianapolis.
