MESSAGE OF THE DEAN

eeping in view the enhanced specialized health care needs of the province and the severe shortage of

specialists to meet those needs, the Government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa decided to establish a separate and

independent postgraduate Medical institute at Lady Reading Hospital. Peshawar in 1984 with the following

objectives:-

1. To prepare and train postgraduate doctors towards attaining higher postgraduate qualifications enabling them to provide high quality specialist care to the people of the province at district and sub district level.

2. To establish a provincial center of excellence which could offer the highest quality tertiary health care services to the people of the province.

3. To promote research in all fields of health in the province.

The staff of Postgraduate Medical Institute (PGMI) accepted this challenging task with firm determination

and total commitment. Despite major obstacles including lack of adequate infrastructure, manpower and

equipment, the staff and students of Postgraduate Medical Institute worked extremely hard and converted the

dream of Postgraduate Medical Institute in the province into a reality. The institute now stands recognized as

a premier teaching and training institute by P.M.D.C, College of Physicians & Surgeon of Pakistan, Khyber

Medical University, Peshawar and the Royal Colleges of UK and Ireland. The institute celebrated its 32 year

of existence in 2016.

Dean and staff of Postgraduate Medical Institute can rightly claim that Postgraduate Medical Institute has not

only served the health needs of the province as major Human Resource Development (HRD) center, but has

also succeeded and introducing a culture of research among faculty as well as postgraduates students. Such

research is now regularly published in a respectable Journal of Postgraduate Medical Institute (JPMI) and in

many other national and international medical journals. PGMI hold Institutional Review Board (IRB) status it

is the only ethics committee in KPK registered with Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS)

USA.

PGMI is the only institute of its kind in the country which inducts, monitors, pay and certifies every single

postgraduate trainee in and out side the province in recognized Postgraduate training institutes. We hope and

pray that the next ten years will witness further major successful strides towards achieving the goals of

postgraduate medical education.

PGMI has is own Medical Education Department which is structured according to WHO standards, staffed by

professionally trained and qualified faculty members. PGMI Peshawar is the only public sector institute which

has fellow of the FAIMER (Foundation for Advancement of International Medical Education & Research

Institute). The PGMI journal IS one of the best journals in the country recognized by PM&DC and it is the

2nd best journal of Pakistan declared by South Asian Cochrane Network.

PGMI Peshawar has established Department of Evaluation for Trainees and Supervisors. The Department will

conduct quarterly mock exams in the shape of MCQs, SEQs, TOACs & OSCEs. The trainees will be assed

and counseled after this evaluation.

The revision and updating of this important document was made possible because of the long hours and

dedicated work by the prospectus committee which comprised of Professor Abid Jameel, Associate Professor

Sahibzada Mahmood Noor, Assistant Professor Sobia Sabir Ali, Dr. Farida Mufti Deputy Dean, Dr. Mumtaz

PART-I

ABOUT PGMI

History / background

- Medical profession is one of the fastest growing fields. Its demands are increasing day by day and

it is the need of the hour to keep pace with the changing world of medicine. Previously doctors of

this province would go to teaching institutes of other provinces for the sake of training and

specialization. That was costly and cumbersome. Looking at the diverse and ever increasing

teaching and training needs of the province, the provincial Government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa

decided to establish a postgraduate medical institute within the province. The morning of October

1984, was glistening with the crown of the long awaited dream come true. Lady Reading Hospital,

Peshawar, being the oldest and the most prestigious medical facility of the province, was given the

honor to host the prestigious Postgraduate Medical Institute. The main objectives of PGMI are:

- (i) Teaching and training, (ii) Promotion of research and (iii) Improvement of patient care and

professional ethics. During phase I, the institute started clinical diplomas including DGO, DCH,

DLO, DA, DCP, DO, DMRD, DTCD and the degrees of M. Phil radiology, MS Ophthalmology,

MS Orthopedics, MD Neurosurgery and MD Cardiology. The FCPS training program was added

in Phase II. PGMI started in 1984 with 90 postgraduate medical trainees training for Diploma

courses from University of Peshawar and FCPS/MCPS courses from College of Physicians and

Surgeons of Pakistan (CPSP). With the passage of time the will of young doctors to receive

postgraduate training and degrees increased and so did the number of applicants for training slots

at PGMI which stood at 2973 in 2016. PGMI is affiliated to Khyber Medical University, Peshawar

for the award of degrees and diplomas and recognized/accredited by College of Physicians and

Surgeons of Pakistan for the award of FCPS and MCPS diplomas in various specialties. Number of

degrees and diplomas offered by PGMI is as follows:

- FCPS 34 subjects

- MCPS 13 subjects

- Diploma Courses 12 subjects

PGMI acts as the main body for the selection and distribution of Trainee Medical Officers for FC PS as well as

MCPS and Diploma training programs. All the training records and salary/stipend records of TMOs are

maintained by PGMI head office located at Hayatabad, Peshawar.

ACADEMIC ACTIVITIES

In 32 years of its existence, PGMI has grown into a model teaching institute of this province. There are

multipal teaching hospitals with highly qualified faculty imparting training to postgraduate students of PGMI

all of the units are recognized by the CPSP for formal training of FCPS Trainees. Besides the degree courses,

some of the units are also offering diploma courses such as DCH, DGO, DO, DLO, DCP, DA, DTCD,

DMRD, besides DCD in Orthodontics, Periodontics, Paedodontics and Operative Dentistry.

All of the teaching units have a “Minimum Mandatory Teaching Program” for the trainees. The salient

features of the mandatory teaching program include teaching rounds, grand rounds, interactive lectures by

the faculty members, departmental CPC presented by the TMOs, journal clubs, case presentations (both short

and long), besides departmental audit, mortality meetings and intradepartmental meetings. Mini-CEX and

DOPS shall be started soon in PGMI.

A PGMI DME looks into the quality of the presentations of each unit and suggests changes / improvements,

as and when needed. Besides the major CPC, there is one medicine and allied and a surgical and allied CPC

on different days of the week. All the TMOs and faculty members are required to attend these CPCs.

PGMI also regularly organizes seminars, symposia and workshops on common and important subjects.

These activities are adorned by the tireless efforts of the teachers of PGMI. The institute also invites eminent

speakers and authorities from abroad to speak on important subjects. The institute also supports and

participates in the CPSP workshops being conducted for the trainees and teachers of the PGMI.

In collaboration with the CPSP Regional office, pre-examination intensive Courses for FCPS Part II are

regularly organized annually by the Departments of Medicine, Surgery and Gynae Obstetrics. Many trainees

from all over the country attend these courses. Other departments of PGMI shall soon be offering similar

courses in other specialties.

PGMI is also involved in the academic affairs of CPSP. Many of the teachers are members of various

faculties of CPSP and are also examiners for MCPS and FCPS examinations.

Nearly all the academic units of the PGMI are regularly involved in organizing National and International

conferences in Peshawar. These conferences are heavily attended and contribute a lot to the academic beauty

of our institute.
