Journalist and filmmaker Giselle Fernandez wrote...

We suffer the sad loss of an icon today in the passing of Oriana Fallaci in hernative Florence. This passionate and powerful voice of the 20th Century wasforever bold and brazen in her dissection of politics, power and ego, and theirdevastating effects on democracies everywhere. She wrote with an integrityand force of character that defined her lifes work up until the very last days.Fallaci was perhaps my greatest inspiration as a journalist. Her dynamic, dramatic and distinct point of view on the demise of democracies, especially inher latest works that evoked death threats against her did nothing to silenceher conviction or her writings. She died as she livedwith passion, conviction, purpose and power. They dont make writers like her anymore.

    REASON AS ANTIDOTE

And so the rage and pride gave birth to disdain, guided by reason. In theprologue, Fallaci reveals how the gatekeepers of political correctness haveattacked her since the publication of her previous book, The Rage and thePride.

She received insults and death threats from various quarters; politicians, academics and sections of the mass media joined in this choir ofcondemnation. But there was also an outpouring of support, mostly lettersfrom ordinary people in Europe who expressed their gratitude for someone

    speaking on their behalf.

What makes Fallacis style so appealing is the blend of historical fact witheyewitness journalism. As a rhetorical device, she addresses a variety ofcontemporary and historical personages in the form of letters throughout thetext. She scorns the peace activists, explaining why some wars are right andlegitimate. In a blunt semantic shift, she now describes the shrill ensemble ofpolitically correct cicadas as outright traitors and collaborators. She takes aswipe at the double standards and the hostile political climate in Europe aswell as the hypocrites and fools at the United Nations.

In chapter one she gives her assessment of the changing demographics in

Europe where non-integrated immigrant communities have sprung up in mostmajor cities. To counter the propaganda of the crusades as a sin of the West, she provides numerous examples of Islamic incursions into Europe before andafter the crusades, including the 668 assault on Constantinople, the 711invasion of the Iberian Peninsula, the attempted subjugation of France in 721and the conquest of Sicily in 827.

There were also the raids on the Italian coast and the Ottoman conquest of theBalkans. Sensitive readers must be aware that this section contains manygraphic descriptions of the utmost cruelty. Finally, she draws a parallelbetween those early wars and the Islamic expansionism of today.

Fallaci then takes us on a tour of Europe to show how bad things have become. She starts and ends with Italy and visits other countries in between. In France, there are cities where Maghrebis make up 30% of the population. She refers tothe murders of Pim Fortuyn and Theo van Gogh in the Netherlands, anddescribes Spain under its current government as a hopeless case.

But it is the UK that is the real strategic base sheltering the vanguard, andFallaci even has harsh words for the singer Cat Stevens. She mentions LouisFarrakhan, Malcolm X and Muhammad Ali in the USA, recounting a frighteninginterview she had with the famous boxer.

The author reproaches herself for not having seen the danger coming in theearly 1970s. Drawing on the research of Bat Yeor, she chronicles the sordidconspiracy between the then-EEC and Arab governments. It started after theYom Kippur War and the OPEC oil boycott.

In the form of the Euro-Arab dialogue, European academics and politicians, spearheaded by Leftists, have sold Europes soul for oil and immigrants. Withtheir servile attitude, they have betrayed the essence of our Western values. She also makes mention of Haj Amin al-Husseini, the Palestinian leader thatbecame an ally of Hitler.

Fallaci identifies those who have sold out Europe as the Triple Alliance: the

Catholic Church, the Right and the Left. The church stood by when terribleintellectual robberies took place, for example the appropriation of Judeo-Christian myths for the purposes of the enemy. Mourning the decline of thehistorical Italian Right of the Risorgimento, she calls it a noble lady thatcommitted suicide. Before launching into the Left the points out the strikingsimilarities between the extreme Right and extreme Left.

Accusing the Left of dogmatism and intellectual terrorism, she shows how itembraced Khomeini in 1979 and how it has since fallen in love with Bin Ladenand Saddam Hussein. She claims that the Left is not secular but is in fact anilliberal and totalitarian church under whose rule in the 1990s the number ofimmigrants to Italy increased exponentially. At the root of its Anti-

Occidentalism is a profound and irrational hatred of the USA and Israel.

In the Epilogue she diagnoses the death of reason in the West as caused by

people too lazy to think. Here she provides further evidence of the onslaughton Western culture, talking of the fear of being free, the decline ofintelligence and the decline of reason. Although the USA gives her hope,America Alone is not enough to reverse the decay. Fallaci maintains thatterrorism is just a strategy, that immigration is the real danger and that theenemy aims to destroy our very souls, our dreams, ideas and achievements.

The Post-Script is the text of her speech on the occasion of receiving an awardfrom the Center For The Study of Popular Culture on 28 th November 2005. In it,Fallaci boldly states that she hates the Bin Ladens, Zarkawis, Ward Churchills,Noam Chomskys and Michael Moores of the world. She talks favourably of her

meeting with Pope Benedict, expressing confidence in his understanding of thesituation.

Referring to the 2005 riots in France, she states that Left and Right areobsolete expressions since they are just two teams battling for power. She doesnot consider herself as either. Finally, she thanks those who persist in exposingthe facts. Although they are criticized as dissidents, heretics and outlaws, sheencourages them to pursue the battle of ideas, confident that truth will win inthe end.

The Force Of Reason is a tour de force, more measured than the previous bookbut not entirely devoid of her trademark fury and full of humor. In essence, the

book is a comprehensive analysis of the perilous intellectual climate andalarming world events, a much-needed antidote to a set of widely held falsebeliefs, and an impassioned wake-up call to the West.

    PASSIONATE POLEMIC

This passionate polemic by Oriana Fallaci grew out of an article she wrote foran Italian newspaper after the events of 9/11. She afterwards expanded thepiece in order to say everything she wanted to get off her chest. In her ownwords, she was trying to open the eyes of those who do not want to see, unplug

the ears of those who do not want to hear and ignite the thoughts of those whorefuse to think.

In her introductory dedication, Fallaci explains that the English text is her owntranslation and there may be oddities in the style and vocabulary, but that shewanted it to be like that because she wishes to retain complete responsibilityfor every word, period and comma in this book. I found her language quitecharming, an Italianate version of English brimming with rage and anger.

In the Preface, she talks about inter alia New York as a place of refuge forItalian expatriates, her family background, the struggle against fascism, theprocess of writing the newspaper article that eventually evolved into this book, and much more besides.

The main text starts out with her feelings right after she saw the attack on theTwin Towers on TV and what followed. She also discusses the various reactionsfrom around the globe, the heroism of the fire-fighters and Americas unity inthe face of adversity.

Fallaci really lays into the politically correct, the followers of multiculturalismand the apologists for terrorism. While not blind to the faults of the West, shevigorously defends Western culture, even Christianity, although she claims tobe an atheist.

Talking extensively about her travels in the Middle East, Fallaci relates ahumorous incident about the time she interviewed the Ayatollah Khomeini inIran, and a sad encounter with Ali Bhutto, a former Pakistani prime minister. Her outrage at the destruction of the Bamiyan Buddha statues in Afghanistan ispalpable. She also gives a moving account of her meeting with the Dalai Lamain Dharamsala in 1968.

Fallaci doesnt mince words as she talks about the growing numbers of

culturally non-integrated minorities in her native Italy and the problems arisingfrom that situation. It would appear that she despairs for the future of Europe, lashing out at certain European leaders and the political elites. She calls the EUthe suicide of Europe.

I think The Rage And The Pride must be the most politically incorrect book thatI have ever read. It is brutally honest, emotional and perhaps a bit over the topin one or two places where it might make some readers hair stand on end. Butit is a riveting read, one very special womans testament to the dangers facingthe West, and an eloquent defense of our culture.

Those who appreciate this book may also appreciate Eurabia by Bat Yeor,

Unholy Alliance by David Horowitz, The New Anti-Semitism by Phyllis Chesler,Castle Of Lies by Christopher Booker, Terror by Fiamma Nirenstein and Fallacislatest, The Force Of Reason.

[A French court on Nov. 20, 2002, dismissed a request to ban The Rage andthe Pride, the best-selling book by [leftist] Italian journalist Oriana Fallacithat critics say incites hatred of Muslims. Fallaci, 73, is a former Resistance

fighter and war correspondent best-known for her uncompromising interviewswith world leaders]

I find it shameful that in Italy there should be a procession of individualsdressed as suicide bombers who spew vile abuse at Israel, hold up photographsof Israeli leaders on whose foreheads they have drawn the swastika, incitepeople to hate the Jews.

And who, in order to see Jews once again in the extermination camps, in the

gas chambers, in the ovens of Dachau and Mauthausen and Buchenwald andBergen-Belsen et cetera, would sell their own mother to a harem.

I find it shameful that the Catholic Church should permit a bishop, one withlodgings in the Vatican no less, a saintly man who was found in Jerusalem withan arsenal of arms and explosives hidden in the secret compartments of hissacred Mercedes, to participate in that procession and plant himself in front ofa microphone to thank in the name of God the suicide bombers who massacrethe Jews in pizzerias and supermarkets. To call them martyrs who go to theirdeaths as to a party.

I have always loved life. The one who loves life will never be forced to

conform, submit or let him/herself be controlled. The one who loves lifealways stands at the window with a rifle in order to defend life... A humanbeing who conforms, submits, allows her/himself to be controlled, is not ahuman being.

I find it shameful that in France, the France of Liberty-Equality-Fraternity, theyburn synagogues, terrorize Jews, profane their cemeteries. I find it shamefulthat the youth of Holland and Germany and Denmark flaunt the kaffiah just asMussolinis avant garde used to flaunt the club and the fascist badge.

I find it shameful that in nearly all the universities of Europe Palestinianstudents sponsor and nurture anti-Semitism. That in Sweden they asked thatthe Nobel Peace Prize given to Shimon Peres in 1994 be taken back andconferred on the dove with the olive branch in his mouth, that is on Arafat.

I find it shameful that the distinguished members of the Committee, aCommittee that (it would appear) rewards political color rather than merit,

should take this request into consideration and even respond to it. In hell theNobel Prize honors he who does not deserve it.

I find it shameful (were back in Italy) that state-run television stationscontribute to the resurgent anti-Semitism, crying only over Palestinian deathswhile playing down Israeli deaths, glossing over them in unwilling tones.

I find it shameful that in their debates they host with much deference thescoundrels with turban or kaffiah who yesterday sang hymns to the slaughter atNew York and today sing hymns to the slaughters at Jerusalem, at Haifa, atNetanya, at Tel Aviv.

I find it shameful that the press does the same, that it is indignant because

Israeli tanks surround the Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem, that it is notindignant because inside that same church two hundred Palestinian terroristswell armed with machine guns and munitions and explosives (among them arevarious leaders of Hamas and Al-Aqsa) are not unwelcome guests of the monks(who then accept bottles of mineral water and jars of honey from the soldiersof those tanks).

I find it shameful that, in giving the number of Israelis killed since thebeginning of the Second Intifada (four hundred twelve), a noted dailynewspaper found it appropriate to underline in capital letters that more peopleare killed in their traffic accidents. (Six hundred a year).

  • 8/14/2019 ORIANA FALLACI OF BLESSED MEMORY

I find it shameful that the Roman Observer, the newspaper of the Popea Popewho not long ago left in the Wailing Wall a letter of apology for the Jews

accuses of extermination a people who were exterminated in the millions byChristians. By Europeans. I find it shameful that this newspaper denies to thesurvivors of that people (survivors who still have numbers tattooed on theirarms) the right to react, to defend themselves, to not be exterminated again.

I find it shameful that in the name of Jesus Christ (a Jew without whom theywould all be unemployed), the priests of our parishes or Social Centers orwhatever they are flirt with the assassins of those in Jerusalem who cannot goto eat a pizza or buy some eggs without being blown up.

I find it shameful that they are on the side of the very ones who inauguratedterrorism, killing us on airplanes, in airports, at the Olympics, and who todayentertain themselves by killing western journalists. By shooting them, abducting them, cutting their throats, decapitating them. (Theres someone inItaly who, since the appearance of Anger and Pride, would like to do the sameto me. Citing verses of the Koran he exhorts his brothers in the mosques andthe Islamic Community to chastise me in the name of Allah. To kill me. Or

rather to die with me. Since hes someone who speaks English well, Illrespond to him in English: F*** you.

    13/17

I find it shameful that almost all of the left, the left that twenty years ago

permitted one of its union processionals to deposit a coffin (as a Mafiosowarning) in front of the synagogue of Rome, forgets the contribution made bythe Jews to the fight against fascism. Made by Carlo and Nello Rossini, forexample, by Leone Ginzburg, by Umberto Terracini, by Leo Valiani, by EmilioSereni, by women like my friend Anna Maria Enriques Agnoletti who was shot atFlorence on June 12, 1944, by seventy-five of the three-hundred-thirty-fivepeople killed at the Fosse Ardeatine, by the infinite others killed under tortureor in combat or before firing squads. (The companions, the teachers, of myinfancy and my youth.)

I find it shameful that in part through the fault of the leftor rather, primarilythrough the fault of the left (think of the left that inaugurates its congressesapplauding the representative of the PLO, leader in Italy of the Palestinianswho want the destruction of Israel)--Jews in Italian cities are once again afraid.

And in French cities and Dutch cities and Danish cities and German cities, it isthe same. I find it shameful that Jews tremble at the passage of the scoundrelsdressed like suicide bombers just as they trembled during Krystallnacht, thenight in which Hitler gave free rein to the Hunt of the Jews.

I find it shameful that in obedience to the stupid, vile, dishonest, and for themextremely advantageous fashion of Political Correctness the usual opportunistsor better the usual parasitesexploit the word Peace. That in the name ofthe word Peace, by now more debauched than the words Love and Humanity, they absolve one side alone of its hate and bestiality. That in the name of apacifism (read conformism) delegated to the singing crickets and buffoons whoused to lick Pol Pots feet they incite people who are confused or ingenuous orintimidated. Trick them, corrupt them, carry them back a half century to thetime of the yellow star on the coat. These charlatans who care about thePalestinians as much as I care about the charlatans. That is not at all.

I find it shameful that many Italians and many Europeans have chosen as their

standard-bearer the gentleman (or so it is polite to say) Arafat. This nonentitywho thanks to the money of the Saudi Royal Family plays the Mussolini adperpetuum and in his megalomania believes he will pass into History as theGeorge Washington of Palestine. This ungrammatical wretch who when Iinterviewed him was unable even to put together a complete sentence, tomake articulate conversation. So that to put it all together, write it, publish it,cost me a tremendous effort and I concluded that compared to him evenGhaddafi sounds like Leonardo da Vinci.

This false warrior who always goes around in uniform like Pinochet, neverputting on civilian garb, and yet despite this has never participated in a battle.

War is something he sends, has always sent, others to do for him. That is, thepoor souls who believe in him. This pompous incompetent who playing the partof Head of State caused the failure of the Camp David negotiations, Clintonsmediation. No-no-I-want-Jerusalem-all-to-myself. This eternal liar who has aflash of sincerity only when (in private) he denies Israels right to exist, andwho as I say in my book contradicts himself every five minutes. He always playsthe double-cross, lies even if you ask him what time it is, so that you can nevertrust him. Never! With him you will always wind up systematically betrayed.

This eternal terrorist who knows only how to be a terrorist (while keepinghimself safe) and who during the Seventies, that is when I interviewed him, even trained the terrorists of Baader-Meinhof. With them, children ten years of

age. Poor children. (Now he trains them to become suicide bombers. A hundredbaby suicide bombers are in the works: a hundred!).

This weathercock who keeps his wife at Paris, served and revered like a queen, and keeps his people down in the s***. He takes them out of the s*** only tosend them to die, to kill and to die, like the eighteen year old girls who inorder to earn equality with the fate of their victims. And yet many Italians lovehim, yes. Just like they loved Mussolini. And many other Europeans do thesame.

I find it shameful and see in all this the rise of a new fascism, a new Nazism. Afascism, a Nazism, that much more grim and revolting because it is conductedand nourished by those who hypocritically pose as do-gooders, progressives, communists, pacifists, Catholics or rather Christians, and who have the gall tolabel a warmonger anyone like me who screams the truth.

I see it, yes, and I say the following. I have never been tender with the tragicand Shakespearean figure Sharon. (I know youve come to add another scalpto your necklace, he murmured almost with sadness when I went to interviewhim in 1982.)

I have often had disagreements with the Israelis, ugly ones, and in the past Ihave defended the Palestinians a great deal. Maybe more than they deserved. But I stand with Israel, I stand with the Jews. I stand just as I stood as a younggirl during the time when I fought with them, and when the Anna Marias wereshot.

I defend their right to exist, to defend themselves, to not let themselves beexterminated a second time. And disgusted by the anti-Semitism of manyItalians, of many Europeans, I am ashamed of this shame that dishonors myCountry and Europe. At best, it is not a community of States, but a pit ofPontius Pilates. And even if all the inhabitants of this planet were to thinkotherwise, I would continue to think so.
