Gas Engines - Cogeneration Solutions (CHP)

Cogeneration systems also called combined heat and power (CHP) systems are designed to generate both heat and power. GE’s Jenbacher CHP systems use waste heat accrued during an engine operation to generate overall plant efficiencies of more than 90 percent. This efficient and economical method of energy conversion achieves primary energy savings of roughly 40 percent by using a gas engine cogeneration system instead of separate power and heat generation equipment. Transportation and distribution losses also are reduced or eliminated as the decentralized energy supply is aligned where it is needed.

Features & Benefits Cogeneration systems generate both heat and power GE’s Jenbacher CHP systems use waste heat from various sources to

increase plant efficiency by up to 90 percent Cogeneration achieves 40 percent energy savings vs. separate power and

heat generation equipment Reduces or eliminates transportation and distribution losses Addition of boiler system or other heat storage medium further increases

operating time and efficiency Generated power is used by an individual facility or fed into a public power

grid Thermal energy can be used to generate heating water and steam production,

as well as for various types of process heat Cogeneration systems also can be used for CO2 fertilization in greenhouses

and tri-generation systems.

12

Page 14: Orient - Internship Report

GE’s J920 Jenbacher gas engine is designed to support a broad variety of multiple-engine power plant solutions – from remote power supply to combined heat and power (CHP) generation.

Chillers

A chiller is a machine that removes heat from a liquid via a vapor-compression or absorption refrigeration cycle. This liquid can then be circulated through a heat exchanger to cool air or equipment as required. As a necessary byproduct, refrigeration creates waste heat that must be exhausted to ambient or, for greater efficiency, recovered for heating purposes. Concerns in design and selection of chillers include performance, efficiency, maintenance, and product life cycle environmental impact.

Types:- Absorption Chiller (Shuangliang)- Screw type Chiller (Dunham Bush)

Absorption ChillerDefinition of Absorption Chiller

13

Page 15: Orient - Internship Report

Absorption chillers use a heat source such as natural gas or district steam to create a refrigeration cycle that does not use mechanical compression.

WORKINGWeak solution transported by solution pump to the high press generation is heated by heat source in high press generation and concentrated to form intermediate solution is heated in low press generator by the refrigerant vapor produced in the intermediate solution and flowing through copper tubes of low pressure generator and concentrated to form strong solution and to produce refrigerant vapor.

Refrigerant vapor is condensed in the condenser to form water, which enters evaporator through throttle unit refrigerant water is distributed over the bundle of evaporator by evaporator pump, and boiled under low pressure with the heat of chilled water which bundles of absorber through solution distributor to absorb the refrigerant vapor produced in the evaporation, and weak solution is produced.

Refrigeration cycle is the cycle of refrigerant water and then for vapor to liquid statement solution cycle with the solution changed from strong to weak and vice versa. Two cycles are repeated to produce cooling effect continuously. High and low temperature heat that exchanger are provided to improve the heat efficiency by exchanging heat between strong and weak solution.

Indent Sales

“ Order for goods which placed often through a local or foreign agent of a foreign supplier under specified conditions of sale, the acceptance of which by the supplier (or the agent) constitutes a contract of sale is called Indent Sales”

Conditions on which OES work

Cost and Freight (CFR)A trade term requiring the seller to arrange for the carriage of goods by sea to a port of destination, and provide the buyer with the documents necessary to obtain the goods from the carrier. Under CFR, the seller does not have to procure marine insurance against the risk of loss or damage to the goods during transit.

Freight on Board (FOB)A trade term requiring the seller to deliver goods on board a vessel designated by the buyer. The seller fulfills its obligations to deliver when the goods have passed over the ship's rail.

Cost, Insurance and Freight (CIF)A trade term requiring the seller to arrange for the carriage of goods by sea to a port of destination, and provide the buyer with the documents necessary to obtain the goods from the carrier.

Concept of Letter of Credit (LC)

A letter of credit is a document issued by a financial institution, or a similar party, assuring payment to a seller of goods and/or services provided certain documents have been presented to the bank. These are documents that essentially prove that the seller has performed his duties under an underlying contract (e.g., sale of goods contract) and the goods (or services) have been supplied as agreed. In return for these documents, the beneficiary receives payment from the financial institution that issued the letter of credit. The letter of credit serves essentially as a guarantee to the seller that it will be paid regardless of whether the buyer ultimately fails to pay. In this way, the risk that the buyer will fail to pay is transferred from the seller to the letter of credit's issuer. The letter of credit can also be used to ensure that all the agreed upon standards and quality of goods are met by the supplier, provided that these requirements are reflected in the documents described in the letter of credit.

Single Line Diagram (SLD)

A diagram that uses single line and graphic design symbols to indicate a pat and components of an Electrical Circuit. It’s used when information about circuit is required.

Short Circuit (SC)

A short circuit is an abnormal connection between two nodes of an Electric circuit intended to be at different voltages. This may lead to circuit damage overheating or explosion.

Circuit breaker

A circuit breaker is an automatically operated electrical switch designed to protect an electrical circuit from damage caused by overload or short circuit. Its basic function is to detect fault condition and interrupt condition flow.

Current Transformer (CT)

A current transformer is used for measurement of alternating electric current. When current in a circuit is too high to directly apply to measuredly instruments a current transformer produces a reduced current accurately proportional to the current in the circuit, which can be conveniently connected to measuring instruments and recording instruments. Current transformers are commonly used in metering and protective relays in the electrical power industry.

23

Page 25: Orient - Internship Report

Power Transformer (PT)

Voltage Transformer (VT)

(Potential transformer also called voltage transformer) are a parallel connected type of instrument transformer. These are designed for monitoring single phase and three phase power line voltages in power metering applications. The power terminals can be connected either in line to line or in line to neutral configuration. It allows meters to take readings from electrical service connections with higher voltage then the meter is normally capable of handling without a potential transformer.

Switch Gear

In an electric power system, switch gear is the combination of electrical disconnect switches, fuses or circuit breakers to control protect and isolate electrical equipment. Switch gear is used to de-energize the equipment to allow work to be done and to clear faults downstream. This type of equipment is important because it’s directly linked to the reliability of the electricity supply.

Bus Bars

In electrical power distribution, a bus bar is a strip or bar that conducts electricity with in a switch board, substation, battery bank or other electrical apparatus. Its main purpose is to conduct electricity.

Alternator

- Alternator

supply the

electric

power used

by all

sectors of

modern

societies:

industrial,

commercial,

agricultural,

and

domestic

- Alternator usually operate together (or in parallel), forming a large power

system supplying electrical energy to the loads or consumers.

- Alternators are built in large units, their rating ranging from tens to hundreds

of megawatts.

- Alternator converts mechanical power to ac electric power. The source of

mechanical power, the prime mover, may be a diesel engine, a steam

turbine, a water turbine, or any similar device.

- Smaller synchronous machines are sometimes used for private generation

and as standby units, with diesel engines or gas turbines as prime movers.

Conclusion

The whole experience of working at Orient Energy Systems was great. This organization has a superb work culture, great minds and very high quality of work. I learned a lot of things here from their departments Sales, Engineering and Product Support. The work I could complete here was very satisfactory. I will try to develop myself more and use all my knowledge in the development of any organization in future.
