The false killer whale is actually a type of large dolphin, mainly found in the open ocean

The idea of the Tidal Orchestra was to depict the abundance of life as well as the movements and vibrations of the ocean. By using and sampling the orchestra in an unconventional way, we could create these ‘living’ chords that ebb and flow throughout the series.

Inspired by Impressionism, more specifically the works of Claude Monet and his depiction of water, our concept was to similarly convey the vibrancy and movement of Impressionist paintings. Like using multiple strokes on a canvas, the string players used plucks and tremolos between notes of a chord at varying speeds and entrances. We created flowing textures, rather than traditional sustained notes. The same effect was applied to the woodwinds, and brass. These dif ferent organic colors all intertwine, creating varying depths of sound and movement. Just like a Monet painting, the score is built of f of these many layers of individual brushstrokes of sound to create the overall thematic material , while stil l lending itself to emotional melodies that can carry the music along. As we travel deeper into the ocean, the score becomes more ‘stil l ’ to reflect the calmer waters and absence of sunlight, while stil l incorporating our ‘ l iving’ chords in a more subdued way to emulate the life at the bottom of the sea.
