• There is no "right" or "perfect" way to search. Experiment!
• Search for every term that might bring results: railroad, railway
• Use contemporaneous terms (mulatto) and spellings: base ball, basket-ball
• Understand typesetting shortcuts: McNulty M’Nulty
• Exploit proximity searching: “Haskins”=2861 results “Haskins chaplain"~10=3 results
• Don't prematurely limit your search geographically
• Use terms from a more formal era: Bobby Jones = R.W. Jones; Sally Jones = Mrs. R.W. Jones
• Include titles (Judge Johnson) and suffixes (A. B. Smith, Jr.) if known, to refine results.
• Schedule a time to re-run your search. (More newspapers are being added all the time.)
