RELAY ESSAYS by Bishop & Mrs. Yamanaka & Board of Directors

Owen NakaoThe 46th Annual Tenrikyo Bazaar was

successfully held last month without any accidents or major negative incident and in fairly good weather with just the right amount of rain and clouds to keep cool and the dust down.

The people who come to shop at the bazaar are very happy to come as can be seen by their happy faces and comments such as “This is a great bazaar! I come every year.” A scrip booth volunteer Scott Shamoto of Malie Mission Station said: “There was one woman that came back to buy scrips at our booth at least 4 times and every time she kept saying: ‘This is my first time here. This is so awesome, I love it. I’m enjoying it so much.’”

Although hurricanes were headed toward Hawaii, they were still too far away. However, a week later, we were sad to hear that the Okinawa Festival had to be cancelled since a hurricane was scheduled to arrive near that time. As it turned out the hurricane veered off. I’m sure that it was a difficult but necessary decision and under similar circumstances we would probably make the same decision as well for the safety of all.

We were so blessed in so many different ways: The Tenri Cultural Center sits on 3.2 acres of prime real estate in luscious Nuuanu Valley with cool winds and misty rains. Owning the property gives us a lot of flexibility and leeway in terms when we can start preparations and the space to do it.

The church members are so dedicated they volunteer until their last ounce of strength. Mrs. Helen Takata of McCully Church, 98 years old, took on the responsibility of selling the

used books and shoes, several years ago. God bless her! Now with her daughters Judith and Christine helping, it’s become a popular item! They organized the books so it’s easier for people to browse and make their selections. Anyway Mrs. Takata fell and hit her head on the concrete walkway on the Saturday before the bazaar. She went to the hospital bleeding with a big lump on her head. She comes back the next day to help at the bazaar! Of course we had her sit down! She says, “I love the bazaar, I love serving the people who come! I was here when the bazaar first started. We used to sleep over at Dendocho (Mission Headquarters). That’s how busy it was! The churches use to make the maki sushi.”

Mrs. Jean Matsunobu of North Honolulu Church organizes the Women’s Association members to make pillows, cushions and futon (blankets) at the West House from six months prior in February. She makes cakes and snacks for the volunteers which keeps everyone happy and smiling.

Oden (slow cooked vegetables) is our biggest selling food item and Kochi Makoto church has been in charge for as long as I can remember with Mrs. Satoe Kakitani leading the way. They start chopping and cooking from three days prior using many volunteers. When the bazaar starts, people line up with large pots so they can take home and share with their friends and family! At 50 cents per piece they can’t go wrong. With over $4,000 in sales, around 8,000 pieces are prepared and sold! Son Tate Kakitani was looking forward to buy lunch from the other booths, but by the time he was able to leave the oden booth which

was after they sold out, the other booths were sold out as well! I asked him why he couldn’t send his younger brothers out to get something for him, he said, “we were so short-handed, nobody could leave!”

I arrived at 6am on bazaar day and already about 10 people were lining up at the Rummage Sale entrance. Mr. Norio Okada of Shimagahara Hawaii Mission Station said they came at 4:30am. Last year it was 6:30am. The bazaar

starts at 8:30, mind you.The Tenrikyo Bazaar has become such a

tradition that people look forward to coming every year. This bazaar is special, but it’s special because of the people who volunteer and dedicate themselves to making sure everything goes right. It’s their sincerity that provides the fuel to do nioigake in the community.

Thank you everyone for your sincere hinokishin!

Appearing before You, God the Parent, Tenri-O-no-Mikoto, I (Shugo Yamanaka) Bishop of the Mission Headquarters of Hawaii, speak with reverence on behalf of the Hawaii congregation.

God the Parent, out of Your single-hearted parental love for all humankind, You have been watching over us day and night and guiding us toward the Joyous Life with Your boundless providence. For this, we are truly grateful. Taking to our heart the joy of living in the embrace of Your parental love, we are engaging in the tasks for single-hearted salvation each day in order to accord with Your intention. Today is the day we are granted to conduct the September Monthly Service at this mission headquarters. We the service performers will unite our hearts as one to perform the Seated Service and the Dance with Hand Movements joyously while earnestly praying for world salvation. We will be joined by our brothers and sisters of the path in Hawaii who have looked forward to this day and have gathered here today, in singing the Songs for the Service in unison and high spirits. As You watch us, we hope You will be spirited as well.

On the 28th of last month, the 46th Annual Tenrikyo Bazaar was held safely and very successfully with all the members of the congregation uniting our hearts and efforts, receiving an unprecedented big turnout, which became a great opportunity for us to sprinkle the fragrance of the teachings to the local community. Also, as this month is a month to emphasize sprinkling the fragrance of the teachings, the “All Tenrikyo Nioigake Day” is being held on each island of Hawaii. All Yoboku and followers of the congregation encourage one another and put forth their best efforts to engage in the nioigake and hinokishin activities with high spirits. We are all determined to be always mindful of sprinkling the fragrance and helping and saving others while paying attention to those around us so that we may convey the teachings to as many people as possible.

Together we vow to accord with the intention of God the Parent, whose desire is for all humankind to live the Joyous Life, and as instruments of Oyasama we will walk firmly on the Path of single-heartedness with God, single-hearted joyousness and single-hearted salvation here in Hawaii. May You, God the Parent, accept our sincerity, and we ask that You guide us further towards the advancement of the Path in Hawaii and the reconstruction of the world into the truly peaceful Joyous Life World, even a day sooner, where everyone will come to know of the Parent of Origin thus awakening to the truth of universal brotherhood & sisterhood and live together in harmony helping and caring for one another. Together with all present, I sincerely pray that You bless us so.

We have just completed September Monthly Service, and I am so grateful to be here for this joyous service.

As I have received this appointment, I humbly ask for a moment of your time.

This past January 26, Oyasama’s 130th Anniversary Service was conducted. After the Autumn Grand Service prior to the “three years, one thousand days”, “Instruction Three” was announced. Along with many other followers, I was listening intently to Shinbashira’s words which could be heard across the whole Sanctuary clearly in a solemn atmosphere, with my back straight. What Shinbashira emphasized was “What is the most important thing is to bring joy to God the Parent and Oyasama.” The Shinbashira shared several stories from the Anecdotes of Oyasama.

I would like to share one of the stories that Shinbashira mentioned: Story #72 “Destined to be saved.”

A man in his 40’s in the prime of his manhood, began to lose the use of his hands and feet due to sciatica. He went to see doctors and sought as many various kinds of medical treatment as possible but he found no effective cure. He himself felt as if he fell into an abyss of misery. Out of his ardent desire to be cured, he went near Tatsuta Village where he heard that a noted herb doctor lived, but was disappointed because the doctor was not home. At that moment he remembered his servants often speaking of the Living Shrine of God of Shoyashiki Village. Since he had come thus far he went there. He was warmly

received by Oyasama, who said: “You will be saved, will be saved. You are destined to be saved.” For the next half a year, each time he returned to Jiba, his condition improved, and he held a celebration for his recovery.

Feeling so grateful, he immediately asked Oyasama how to repay Her for the favor. Oyasama replied: “It is neither money nor material things. If you are happy because you have been saved, then with that joy go out to save people who are to be saved. That is the best way to repay the favor. Strive courageously for the salvation of others.”

Self-Realization of My Causation I think I was always trying to save others.

It has been 36years since I came to Hawaii. However, when I look back, I remember thinking no matter how much I tried door-to-door mission, it was not effective. I felt like I was useless. “What am I doing here?” 36 years has passed rapidly.

Most of the people I met are not interested and I felt really discouraged. I started thinking, “What is the purpose of doing this? I should just quit.”

In those days, the late Rev. Tadamasa

Fukaya often came to Hawaii to do the Sazuke Healing Session. I visited him during one of these sessions and shared with him about how discouraging my nioigake mission was, and informed him of my intentions to find work after my twins started school. Upon hearing this, Rev. Fukaya quickly responded saying that I had a “widow causality” meaning that my husband would pass away early. Hearing this, I was shocked. Because when we got married, we received three sets of his-and-hers tea cups for wedding gifts. In all three sets “his” cups were all either chipped or broken. I like to drink tea a lot, but my husband who’s a local guy didn’t drink tea. So his cups were hardly used, yet they all got chipped or broken. I felt something so unpleasant about it at that time. So I decided to continue my door-to-door mission.

During our Kalihi daysDuring our child-rearing days, we started

our life in Kalihi near Oahu Prison where the rent was only $380 a month including utilities. The rent was very low even in those days. However, we could hear cat-and-mouse chases, racing back and forth in the attic while we slept. The noise would stop after we heard the mouse squealing.

In those days, December, January, February were the rainy season. When it rained hard, dirty water started dripping from the ceiling. We had to take out the buckets, basins and even our cooking pots to catch the water.

Our landlord was a local Japanese and I talked to him saying, “Don’t you think this area is unsafe since the prison is right there?” He responded saying, “Well, when a prisoner escapes, they run far away. Actually this is safer that other places.” I nodded, convinced

of the logic.During the daytime, when I had two

children, I took 3-year-old Moses by hand and 1-year-old Annabella in a stroller and walked from door to door to do nioigake.

One day I was visiting a Filipino lady for Sazuke prayer who lived on the second floor. Since she lived upstairs, I had to leave my stroller on the first floor by the steps and took my children with me and walked in. When I finished administering the Sazuke, I walked out and found that the stroller was stolen. I had no choice but to carry one-year-old Annabella and walked home with Moses in tow.

In the Anecdotes of Oyasama (Story #39), it said. “Would it not be much better to let the people who need them, have it?” I thought of these words, but honestly I could not be too happy about it.

These incidents were typical of our time there. I cannot reach the level of Oyasama’s hardships, but I felt happy that I could at least have a taste of enduring a frugal and inconvenient life. When I recall those days, I consider them precious experiences that will be treasured in my life.

Man with tattoosAfter we moved to Pearl Church in Palolo,

we used to do nioigake in the Palolo Housing area. We met a man who had a broken bone due to a car accident. That evening, this man called to say that he felt much better after the Sazuke prayer, so he wanted us to come again. We decided to let him come to our evening service from the next day. He was a big muscular guy with a lot of tattoos all over, on his arms, back and legs. He was also wearing sun glasses even inside the house.

At I first thought he was a scary person. In fact he had a problem with his family and was kicked out. So we had him stay with us at our church. He stayed a few months and moved out. A few years later he called and said that he was caught by the police and that he was calling from prison. He said that he was depressed staying in prison and he wrote letters to us every so often due to his loneliness. Rev. Owen and I visited him several times during his stay at prison. The time came for him to be released from prison. However, he had to be admitted to a clean and sober house, unless his family or a church would take him in. Neither his mother nor his sister wanted him. So he asked us if he could stay at Pearl Church until he could find a clean and sober house. A clean and sober house is a place where inmates released from prison can transition to normal life without alcohol and drugs.

We said he could stay, but he had to do the morning & evening services and hinokishin. He agreed and Rev. Owen went to pick him up at the prison. He lost a lot of weight saying that the prison was a “nasty” and horrible place and he never wants to go there again. He wants to regain his strength while at Pearl Church by doing hinokishin.

One day, during lunchtime, I prepare sandwiches and was about to eat when he asked, “Where’s the soup?” I responded, “We only have sandwich and water.” He said that even in prison, they serve soup and sandwich… I said, “Well I guess our church meal is less than the prison.” Since then he sometimes went to community food banks and brought home canned goods and rice.

Miraculous blessings

At the start of the last year of the “three years, one thousand days” before Oyasama’s 130th Anniversary, Rev. Owen suggested that we do the 12 Songs Teodori (Hand Dance) every morning resolution. During this time, we experienced many miraculous blessings.

First head minister’s memberThere is an elderly woman whose mother

was one of the first members of Pearl Church in the 1930’s. She said she was Catholic, so she never came to Pearl Church. But still she would call and ask us every now and then for Sazuke when she got sick. After we started to do the 12 Songs Teodori daily, one day she called and we went to administer the Sazuke. She got well and we invited her to attend the monthly service. She said ok and she’s been coming to the monthly service ever since. She is now 99 years old.

McCully, Citron st.There’s a lady I met going door to door

during the All Tenrikyo Nioigake Day in McCully eight years ago in September. She said she had three heart by-pass surgeries and was not feeling well. Since then I’ve been visiting her for Sazuke. I was talking to her about attending the monthly service. But she said that she wasn’t the type to be in crowds. Nevertheless, ever since we started the 12 Song Teodori every day, something has changed. One day when I visited her she complained about cramps in her leg and had a hard time getting up from her bed. She had to crawl to use the bathroom. After hearing this, I administered the Sazuke and went home. About a week later, I visited her, she said after you left last week, the pain

disappeared completely and she was able to walk! She was so happy with tears in her eyes. I told her to please come to our monthly service and give a testimony in front of the congregation. Since then she started to come to our monthly service.

G r e a t g r a n d d a u g h t e r A t o p i c Dermatitis

This is a story of last October (10/16/15) we were doing door-to-door nioigake in the Palolo area and wanted to meet Mariana who we hadn’t seen for three years. She wasn’t home, but we met her great grand daughter who had atopic dermatitis with a rough skin since her birth. It was around her neck and legs. It was very severe and they had applied a white topical medication on the itchy wounds. The itchiness increases especially when she goes to bed at night, when the body temperature gets warm. Her skin looked as if she suffered from burns. However, this girl’s condition was so severe that I wondered whether she could receive a blessing.

A month later in November (11/16/15), we did Sazuke for them for the second time. This girl’s condition really improved and her mother said that her daughter’s condition started to improve from about a month ago. So I said, “Do you mean the time we first came to pray for her, is that right?” She said yes. We did Sazuke on her again for the third time and she was almost completely healed. There was just a small area left on the back of her neck.

When we visited for the fourth time in December 2015, she was 99% healed.

This year after I came back from Jiba in January, I visited Retina again.

Her skin was completely back to normal.

Mr. S. headache, shoulder, arm and knee pain

After attending all the events at Jiba in January for Oyasama’s 130th Anniversary this year, I went to Tokyo to stay at my sister’s house for three days as usual. Her husband, Mr. S. said that he had severe headaches and the pain also came to his left: his shoulder, bicep and then his back. He also suffered from stiff shoulders and pain in his knees such that he couldn’t squat or sit on the floor.

Since Mr. S. somewhat believed in another religion, I hesitated to share my Tenrikyo faith. This time, however, my sister was massaging his shoulder and arms every night as usual, I heard her complaining that her husband’s shoulder was big and stiff and his arms were so heavy. She said she was massaging with all her strength in trying to help her husband. So this time I finally and decisively, asked him if I could administer the Sazuke. Surprisingly he said, “Yes, please,” without any hesitation. So I did the prayer. I said to him: “This prayer is not an incantation, magical chant, exorcism or powers of superstition. This is a prayer to cut the root of the illness. In order to cut the root of illness, we need to get rid of our mental dust. And also it’s important to cultivate the mind of helping others.”

The next morning, Mr. S. said that his shoulder and back pain had disappeared. Not only that his knee had no pain and he could squat. He had this condition for four years. That evening I departed for Hawaii. After I returned to Honolulu, my sister called me from Japan to say: “Thank you. His shoulders and biceps are really soft. I don’t need to massage him anymore. Moreover, his

Page 8: Origins - Tenrikyo Mission Headquarters of Hawaiitenrikyo-hawaii.com/origins/2016/Origins-201610.pdfprime real estate in luscious Nuuanu Valley with cool winds and misty rains. Owning

8 9

migraine headache which he was suffering for four years, also disappeared.”

Eight months has passed since then, I was wondering how Mr. S. was doing. My sister says that the stiffness in his shoulder, back and legs is still gone and his knee pain hasn’t returned. However, he has migraine headaches sometimes and takes medication for it. I talked to Mr. S. and told him:

“The real salvation is not only to be cured from illness, but more important is the salvation of the mind. No matter what illness or problems, they are all a message from God. We are given a chance to reflect on the use of our mind. Of course it’s wonderful to be cured of illness. However, we are kept alive by something great. So we should appreciate and be grateful for this great favor. And from this deep sense of gratitude, we must develop a natural yearning to give back.”

It will not do to forget the great favor in the world and get caught up in small favors.

Osashizu, Feb 4, 1901

This means we should not forget the great blessings we receive from God the Parent and get caught up in repaying small favors

received from human beings.During this time of Oyasama’s Anniversary

I have experienced many miraculous blessings. I believe that Oyasama must have been at our side and supported us behind the scenes. I truly believe that Oyasama is ever-living and is working for us day and night.

I’d like to conclude by sharing some phrases from “The Life of Oyasama, Foundress of Tenrikyo”. (p. 242)

Oyasama, in order to hasten their spiritual growth, cut short Her physical life by twenty-five years. But the heart of Tsukihi (God the Parent) remains alive now and forever at the Residence of Origin, providing for the growth of all humankind to spiritual maturity. Indeed, the miracles of salvation which occur daily stand as proof of the continuing life and work of Oyasama.

I believe that Oyasama’s Anniversary is the “Seasonal time for saving others and the Seasonal time to be saved.” I am convinced that doing door-to-door Nioigake is most effective in saving others.

Thank you for your kind attention.

On September 4th, Mr. Akinari Nishigaki finished his 2-year duty as a Seinen and returned to Japan. Mahalo for his dedication and efforts at Dendocho.

The 9th International Hinokishin Corps (IHC) was my 3rd time participating and my first time appointed as group leader. Being a group leader was a little stressful given that I had to translate Japanese and make sure that the whole group worked together. But thanks to my partner, Bert, the positive atmosphere of the program, and being near the Jiba, everyone was gung ho and upbeat throughout the entire program.

One moment I would like to share is about the time where a large group of us went to perform the Sazuke on good a friend of the Hawaii YMA. It was truly a moment of unity and faith when our Hawaii YMA chair performed the Sazuke on behalf of YMA in Hawaii with a large group of us. It reminded us all about the importance of cherishing those around you and being together like a family. Also, I obtained the Grant of Safe Childbirth while in Tenri, which lead to the quick and successful birth of my son. Also, through the blessings of God the Parent, he was born after my trip. During my trip in Japan, I worried about my family, but when I was at the Jiba, I was reassured that they would be fine. After IHC and coming home to Hawaii, I have become re-energized and began to look forward to the start of the new era with our new YMA Chair, Kyle Kikuchi!

We would like to express our greatest appreciation for your sincere efforts in this year’s bazaar. We also want to thank the following companies for their generous donations.

I have come across all kinds of recipes using Rice Crispy cereal but I think this is the first time I've tried chicken coated rice crispys and baked. Great way to entice the kiddies to eat and of course big kiddies love it too! Just a tidbit: Aluminum foil can be used to keep food moist, cook it evenly, and make clean-up easier. I'm sure the whole family will absolutely enjoy this!!

1/4 Cup Butter, melted1/2 Cup All-Purpose Flour1 tsp Salt1 tsp Black Pepper-ground1 tsp Garlic Powder1 Egg

1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Coat a medium baking dish with 1/4 cup melted butter.2. In a bowl, mix the flour, salt, pepper, and garlic powder. In a separate bowl, beat together the egg and milk. In a third bowl, mix the cheese, bread crumbs, cereal. Dredge chicken pieces in the flour mixture, dip in the egg mixture, then press in the breadcrumb mixture to coat. Arrange in the prepared baking dish. Drizzle 2 tablespoons butter evenly over chicken.3. Bake 35 minutes in the preheated oven, or until coating is golden brown and chicken juices run clear.
