1. Although things will change from day to day, the central part of London and some of the key routes in will all be affected at some time.

2. The central area in particular will be where Games venues and other events like Live Sites are concentrated and making space for them will affect traffic.

3. If your business is located in, or operates in, the area of impact shown on this map, we urge you to look at the more detailed information we’ll be publishing to help you plan.

27

Page 28: ORN Activity

1. We have been asked by businesses to provide more detail about the places and times where transport will be affected and we are responding positively.

2. This slide gives an example of the kinds of information we’re developing to help businesses and will release in the autumn.

3. You can see and comment on draft examples of the information on the next few slides in the Exhibition Area today.

4 This example is based on modelling that assumes:4. This example is based on modelling that assumes:1. Seasonal reductions due to school holidays2. A ban on planned streetworks on major routes in London3. The ORN and Central London Zone are in operation.

5. It shows the increase in journey time on particular roads if there is NO overall j y pchange in demand. I.E. If the people in this room and the wider travelling public don’t plan to change their journeys in light of how London will operate at Gamestime.

6. We will be providing maps like this that cover the whole of London and show how things vary on different days and at different times.

28

Page 29: ORN Activity

23/09/2011

1. We are asking Londoners and businesses to reduce the total amount that they travel and to avoid busy times and places where possible.

2. If everyone, including you, reduces the amount they travel as far as they can, everyone is likely to be experience better travel conditions overall.

3. Comparing this map to the previous one shows the reductions in delay in Central London that could be achieved if total vehicle trips were reduced by 20%

4 It includes the same assumptions as before4. It includes the same assumptions as before1. Seasonal reductions due to school holidays2. A ban on planned streetworks on major routes in London3. The ORN and Central London Zone are in operation.

5. The sharp eyed among you will have realised that in this part of London there won’t be p y g y pa huge change as it is within the centre of the area directly affected by Games Operations. The traffic management measures around this area designed to allow it to operate safely and effectively will create a cordon effect around it. This means that getting into this area will be difficult and traffic will face delays getting there but that traffic within the area should move relatively freely.

29

Page 30: ORN Activity

23/09/2011

1. In other parts of London there will be different effects.2. This map shows the area slightly to the north of the previous two, centred around

Camden.3. It shows where there will be delays if there is no change in overall demand.4. The reason this area is affected differently to the central area is because the edge

of the cordon effect around the central area runs through it and traffic trying to get into the central area will be delayed here.

30

Page 31: ORN Activity

23/09/2011

1. This map shows the same area around Camden as the last slide.

2. It shows that if everyone can all reduce their trips on the roads in this area by 20% in the morning peak it will make a SIGNIFICANT difference to the number of roads where traffic will be delayed.

3. The message is clear – if everyone does their bit, everyone will benefit.

31

Page 32: ORN Activity

23/09/2011

1. On public transport too, every day will be different during the Olympics and Paralympics.

2. The main impact will come from the millions of spectators travelling to and from Games events at different times and from Londoners and tourists attending free events and cultural events while the Games are running, all on top of London’s usual activity.

3. This will mean that some public transport services will be much busier than usual at some times. For example:

1. The Jubilee Line, Central Line, DLR, Picaddily and Northern Line City Branch will all be busier as will others at certain times.

2. Stations such as Canary Wharf, London Bridge, Bank, Canning Town, Earls Court and St Pancras will also be much busier.

4. This map gives an example of the LU network at a busy time – it shows predicted4. This map gives an example of the LU network at a busy time it shows predicted crowding, if we don’t do anything, in the morning peak hour on Day 7, the busiest day in the first Olympic week.

5. It uses existing London Underground crowding mapping – the grey indicates no additional crowding, the yellow some and so on right through to the black, which will be the most crowded lines.

6. It shows that on those lines that are already busy and also carry spectators to Games venues, there will be more crowding and, where there is more demand than space, this will mean queues.

32

Page 33: ORN Activity

23/09/2011

1. To help businesses plan in detail we’re going to release information like this for every station to help your staff and visitors avoid those queues.

2. This table shows the ‘do nothing scenario’ - it indicates how long we are predicting you will queue at each station in this case London bridge if there is no change inyou will queue at each station, in this case London bridge, if there is no change in demand. Wait times to get onto a train range from

1. White, no change compared to normal2. Yellow, up to 15 minutes to board a train.3. Red up to 30 minutes to board a train4. Black more than 30 minutes and, in extreme cases, up to two hours, to

board a trainboard a train.

3. The information will be for each day of the Games and for every half hour period throughout the entire day.

4. Some days and times there will be problems, as there are now at times on the network. This information will help businesses target their action plans to avoid the p g pworst days and times.

5. This forecasting will be updated going forward as we get more information on1. Paralympic ticket sales2. The full calendar of cultural events

6. As with the road forecasts, it assumes there is no change in travel behaviour by businesses or Londoners.

33

Page 34: ORN Activity

23/09/2011

1. Of course no-one is likely to queue for up to two hours in reality.

2. If crowding becomes too bad, stations will have to be closed, as they are currently sometimes even without the Olympics in places such as Victoria.

3. This slide shows the queue times at the same station if existing customers at that time and place are reduced by 30%.

4. This indicates that the general reduction in transport demand that we are targettingin central London will be effective in dealing with many of the problems.

5 Nevertheless there are still some difficult times on some days where even with a5. Nevertheless, there are still some difficult times on some days where, even with a 30% reduction in demand, there will be significant delays.

34

Page 35: ORN Activity

23/09/2011

1. The slide shows that if we can reduce demand from Londoners by in the order of 60-70%, at particular times on the most difficult days, queuing of more than 15 minutes can almost be eliminated.

2. At those times where we are still predicting problems, even with a 30% fall in d d f L d ill d t hi Thi i t illdemand from Londoners, we will need to achieve even more. This requirement will be very specific to particular locations at particular times on particular days.

3. On the busiest days, at specific times and locations, we will work with businesses in the local area to further reduce demand. For example, encourage employers to enable staff to work from home or go home earlier or later, as well as providing travel ‘advice on the ground’ about alternative and less busy transport routes.

4. Examples of ways businesses are planning to help achieve this include:1. Enabling home working by putting in place the necessary IT2. Changing employee shift patterns3. Putting on social events for employees that want to stay back, enjoy some

of the Games atmosphere and miss the crowds4. Holding meetings at alternative sites away from hotspots5. Helping employees to walk or cycle by relaxing dress codes.

5. There are lots more of these ideas available on the Travel Advice for Business website which we’re delivering jointly with London 2012.

35

Page 36: ORN Activity

23/09/2011

1. Games transport will be a huge operation and we are working closely with London 2012 and lots of other transport operators to deliver a success Games.

2. We know though that businesses want to find as much helpful information as possible in one place.

3. That’s why we’re taking the lead in pulling all the information in to one place and signposting where you can find more help and advice.

4 On top of this we’re offering direct support planning workshops and practical4. On top of this we re offering direct support, planning workshops and practical assistance to hundreds of businesses.

5. We will continue to add detail and depth to this information over the next few months as detailed planning for the Games is finalised.

1. We will continue to provide detail on how transport will be affected.

2. What we’re asking of you is:1. Reduce risk to your business by planning to reduce your transport needs1. Reduce risk to your business by planning to reduce your transport needs

as much as possible during the Games by reducing, retiming, rerouting or remoding trips by staff, suppliers and others.

2. Achieve a general reduction in travel generated by your business by 30%3. In hotspots AT THE BUSIEST TIMES achieve a reduction in the order of

60-70% in the travel generated by your business.
