TRANSCRIPT

Page 1: Ornithological treasures from the Guadalteba Region

T he Guadalteba region, located to the North West of the Malaga

province (Andalusia, Spain), is an area known for its ornithological

treasures. The diversity of its landscapes and environment makes

this region a place where a great number of bird species – which can be

spotted with some regularity – fly over, hibernate and breed.

In the Guadalteba region we find contrasting landscapes, varying

between aquatic ecosystems to quite important mountain ranges;

and from almost flat areas for cereal crops and scrublands to a large

percentage of olive groves, as well as river and stream sections crossed

by small riverside forest areas.

The landscape has been shaped by the Mediterranean climate with a

touch of Continental weather. This weather is typified by its very cold

winters and frosts, and dry and hot summers with minimal rain.

Within this region we must highlight very important ornithological

areas as they accommodate a large variety of bird species. Some of these

species are true ornithological treasures because of their rarity.

Within these zones we have the Campillos Lakes formed by a group

of eight temporary lakes with internal drainage. The two lakes that

stand out are the Capacete Lake and the Dulce Lake. The Dulce Lake

has an ornithological observatory to be used by observers. Both lakes

accommodate a large number of hibernating species when their levels

of water are at their maximum. They also accommodate nesting species

during the periods when they have a good level of water throughout

the year.

Amongst the rocky formations, the Natural Park of the Los Gaitanes

Gorge stands out for its particular beauty. This area is formed by a

narrow and deep pass sculpted in the limestone rock by the waters of

the Guadalhorce River and by the mountain ranges that surround it.

Here, we can gaze at true natural sculptures, which are home to a large

number of bird species.

Other important areas are located among the mountain ranges of Cañete,

Alcaparaín and Peñarrubia. These mountains surround cultivation areas,

scrublands and riverside forests where a large number of species build

their nests, feed, spend the winter or simply rest during their migration.

Guadalteba region is definitely a privileged area as it is relatively close to

the Strait of Gibraltar and because it counts on a wide variety of habitats.

The Strait of Gibraltar is also an entrance doorway for the migratory

African species. Ornithologists and nature lovers will generally find in

Guadalteba endless reasons to focus the zoom lens of their binoculars

and cameras to capture and take home part of Guadalteba’s natural

treasure.
