From our MinisterDear friends,I love…,Easter! The message that it proclaims that Jesus died for us androse again in triumphant new life is the absolute cornerstone of theChristian Faith. Nature itself seems to join in the celebration every year aswhat once appeared grey and lifeless takes on a new dimension. As wecelebrate it at OBC I pray that the familiarity of its story would not lead usto take it for granted in any way. Let’s join together in inspiring worship, meaningful fellowship, relevant outreach and most of all in Biblical truth.

“But in fact, Christ has been raised from the dead.

He is the first of a great harvest.”(1 Corinthians 15:20 NLT)

Easter also reminds us that we have a Gospel that is worthy of sharing with all theworld. Whether through our ‘In Touch’ community newsletter, our Good Friday Walkof Witness or simply our personal friendship evangelism we have a great opportunityto make the most of the season as we pray for other people.

After Easter I’m looking to start a new series focusing in on Romans chapter 8,something I’ve never done before. I’m calling it ‘More Than Conquerors’ so inLifegroups and in Sunday sermons I want us to pick up the wonderful themes of thisparticular chapter. Someone said that if Romans is the Himalayas of the NewTestament chapter 8 is Mount Everest.

“If God is for us, who can be against us?” Romans 8:31

May all of us, whatever our background be inspired by this view of Mount Everestafresh.

Happy Easter!

It seems like a very long time ago nowbut just before Christmas some of theolder youth from OBC were involved in an exciting communityproject, City Safe. The project was in collaboration with a fewother community services such as; The British Transport Police,South Eastern Railway, St Olave’s, Newstead Wood and CitizensUK. The aim was simple, to make Orpington station a safe place. There are many issues and pressures facing young people at themoment, from schools, friends, media, parents and their owndetermination to achieve. This extra pressure can be very hard for youngpeople to cope with as they are also starting to define who they are andwho they want to be which in turn can lead to a reshuffling of their friendsand most importantly their support networks.City Safe’s aim is to be a place of safety and support for those feelingvulnerable, alone or in need of help. Orpington station now has a roomdedicated to the safe space, its a welcoming safe place where young peoplecan access material on getting support through these particularly toughtimes. The station has also trained its staff to recognise young people whomay be in danger, who they will then be able to signpost onto relevantorganisations. We decided to get involved with this project alongside our young peoplebecause we care not only about them as individuals but also for the youngpeople that we don't know. The message of Jesus to care for the least thelast and the lost was in my mind when I received the email asking us forour help in resourcing and promoting this project. As a church we have notonly been able to show those people that we care about them throughthis project, but we have also been able to give our young people anopportunity to reflect on this message from Jesus for our community.

From Danny, our Youth Pastor

From David, our Children & Family WorkerOK Group:

Our group has increased in number which is fantasticnews and all the children are enjoying the activitiessurrounding the stories of Noah. This group is opento all primary school aged children and we wouldappreciate your prayers as we continue to disciple

our children and find a couple more leaders.

Kidzone:Here numbers continue to blossom from crèche through to Kidzone Two andwe are grateful to all our volunteers who give of their time to work with allour children. We also wish to welcome on-board Dolly Salins who joins us toteach our older children, but would like to welcome others to help maintainour regular teaching programme week by week.

Mums and Chums and TiddlersAnother of our regular ministry groups meeting here on Wednesdayafternoons and Friday mornings for families with children under school age. Each week there is an enquiry from another new family either having justmoved to the area, or needing to meet with other similar families. Again weneed more helpers so that everyone who comes to either of these groups feelsthat they get a warm welcome and someone to talk too.

If you feel that any of these opportunities you could help with, then please docome and find how you could serve by speaking to me. Together we mightstrengthen the work that goes on here at OBC and pray for our children andfamilies to know God personally.

Big Breakfast Goes Potty!Churches together in Orpington had another successful event for primaryschool aged children on 27 February. From our Treasurer

As I write this article during Lent, it is a good time to reflect on thejourney that we have taken and the blessings that have been pouredupon us at OBC. I have now completed my sixth year as Treasurerand my sixth set of accounts are being prepared. When I took overin 2010, I wrote the following:“Now is a good time to thank you for placing your trust in me and the FinanceTeam to take us through what will be some very challenging years ahead. What would you rather be? A small church with a few pounds and closure insight? Or a growing church with big building plans, new staff members onthe horizon and a God who can do miracles? I know where I would ratherbe!!”

Well, we have spent 1.37 million pounds in those six years – yes, £1,370,000!!And even more amazing is to add up the income that comes to 1.39 millionpounds, or £1,390,000. In a time of austerity, we have balanced the booksand funded some amazing ministry, mission and big changes to OBC in thosesix years. This is not taking into account the Building Project which takesspending well over £2 million, with income to match thus far.

God has been faithful to us over these years and we look to Him for the yearsahead. As I review 2015’s accounts I am amazed at the generosity of Hispeople here at OBC - many, many thanks. We are looking to do more in 2016,with more people, both here in Orpington and around the world. Let’scontinue to pray and to give as we head into the year ahead and beyond.

The light shines in the darknessMost teenagers make bad choices at some point during their teenage-hood.Couple this with living in an overcrowded slum in a red light area, a motherwho is a sex worker working late nights, and a father who also works longhours for very little income. The prospects for a 14 year old boy Arjun don’tseem very high.

This is the reality for Arjun. Living in Mumbai he has attendedSahaara’s Ghatkopar Educational Centre since 2012. The centreprovides food, supplementary education and skills buildingactivities for children living in and around the red-light area.He was a very quiet child, struggling to make friends, and so itwas a bit of a surprise when he turned up at the educationalcentre with a group of older boys and started behaving badly. It soon became apparent that these boys were takingadvantage of him and influencing his behaviour. Arjun becameinattentive and badly behaved during classes. He started

disturbing the teacher and distracting the other children. The staff of Sahaaracontinued to work with in him by counselling and encouraging Arjun to makebetter choices.A few weeks later, Arjun asked to join Sahaara’s English learning classes. Ashe was counselled, he soon realised that he was behaving badly around theolder boys. He decided to make the most of the opportunities that wasoffering him. What a blessing - to it is to see Arjun a young boy, growing andmaturing!Sahaara are so proud of Arjun. He is now studying hard and not afraid to goagainst the status quo. This is such a big leap from the quiet, shy boy we firstmet!Sahaara are glad to have guided and helped him along the way. OBC areprivileged to be supporting Sahaara through Tearfund.

Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothersand sisters of mine, you did for me. Matt 25:50

In January our Sanctuary Cafe had its third Anniversary! We are delighted that we are still seeing our regularcustomers as well as many new ones coming throughthe doors each week. The opportunities for outreach and ministry are numerous. We also have a number of new volunteers for which we are extremelygrateful, although we can always use more so do speak to Martyn, KarenWolfe or Jo Lewis if you think God may be calling you to be involved, youdon’t need to be able to cook, Karen does that!!! We always need peoplewho have a heart for others, who are able to sit and chat to someone whois struggling, lonely or just wants to share their life with another person.

A few weeks ago a lady came into Cafe, she had been before. She hadn’tbeen out for a couple of months and was feeling low. Her husband hadencouraged her to come. As she sat down and started talking to one of thevolunteers she said that knew she would be made very welcome at the Cafeand there would be someone she could talk to there and so had made theeffort to come. She said how she always enjoyed the atmosphere and wenton to ask one of the staff a question she had about the Bible, which was easilyanswered.

Just recently a young Mum came in who hadn’t been for a while. “I lovecoming here, everyone makes me so welcome” she said.

It’s so good to see the Church in action in this way and we do thank God forthe privilege of serving Him.

Jo Lewis

On a personal note I would like to thank you for the support andencouragement I receive. Through all the kind words I feel I have grown inconfidence. I am extremely grateful and blessed that I am able to serveGod through my gift of baking and working with so many lovely peoplewho make The Sanctuary Cafe an enjoyable place to be.Karen

WE WILL REMEMBER THEM

Martin and Claire Sweet’s update on Eastbourne Spring 2016

We slowly heading towards the end of the third year that we, andSpinnaker, have been in Eastbourne. And yes, that went quick!

Thanks to the support of Eastbourne churches, individuals and trust funds, the work is progressing well with many encouraging aspects for which weare grateful. But we face many challenges ahead, so please continue topray for the development of this project.

Spinnaker’s work in ten local primary schools is going very well indeedwith all but three of the schools visited every two weeks. Please pray thateach time we visit our work will be effective and that we can continue tobuild a strong relationship with staff. Martin is grateful that head teachersand school staff are so appreciative and welcoming. It is encouraging thatschool teaching staff not only see the benefit of our work for their pupils. We are also getting more requests to support RE lessons in classrooms. Please pray for wisdom as we seek to respond to opportunities to supportother schools both in Eastbourne and the surrounding area. Some schoolsare also beginning to appreciate the pastoral support we are able to give.It is such a privilege to work alongside teaching staff and be in appositionto offer support and prayer.

It has also been encouraging to have a growing relationship with manychurches in Eastbourne. Martin has been able to speak at many churchservices and interested groups. We have a wonderful team of threevolunteers also working with Martin but we need some more people tocome forward who are willing to support the work as part-time volunteerteam members, especially some with valuable experience of working inprimary education.

Finally, do pray with us as we seek to extend our commitment here for afurther four years.

Martin and Claire

ANCHOR BOYSHow encouraging to report that we have 25 regular attendees on a Thursdayevening with numbers increasing week by week and although this is a reallypositive blessing all our new joiners this session have been in Year 3, our topage group, which currently amounts to 16 boys. If all are promoted to theJunior Section in July this will take the Junior numbers to over 40 boys! Wewould therefore welcome any new recruits but particularly in Year 1 or 2,and boys can join us as soon as they have reached their 5 Birthday.

It seems a long time ago now but we enjoyed another successful trip to thePanto just before Christmas and this year saw Peter Pan at the Stag Theatre,Sevenoaks, we offered this event to other Anchor Boys across the Battalionso it was good to share with members from other Companies. Many thanksonce again to Ros Scarlett for organising this and to Garrick and Graham Bealfor safely driving us all there and back in the minibus.

We also held a Christmas Parents evening where the boys played their chimebells, acted out the Nativity and sang to their Mums and Dads whilst theyenjoyed a cuppa and mince pie, the boys did us proud and we had over 50parents and grandparents attending. We have so far enjoyed a new sessionof games and activities and our devotional and craft time has focused onCreation, Love and God’s promises to us. We have lots of fun baking withthe boys and have created tasty pancakes as well as love heart cakes forValentine’s Day.

Further afield in the Company huge congratulations go to Sam Wolfe andAdam Stagg on achieving and receiving their Gold Duke of Edinburgh awardsat the February Church Parade and to Daniel Walker on achieving his Bronzeaward. A special mention also goes to Harry Hagues who along with all theother company boys was given £10.00 at the beginning of the session andasked to apply the ‘Parable of the Talents’ from Matthew 25 v. 14 – 30. Welldone Harry who organised a Quiz Night and raised an enormous £249.00which along with the other donations was sent to Cancer research.

Seventy Years and Going StrongOn a Tuesday evening in April 1946, a group of girls met

at Orpington Baptist Church, in the High Street. With Mrs G E Chapman as Captain, we had Cadets. Juniors,Seniors and Pioneers - Miss D Baker, Mrs E Cross and Miss VYates were the Officers and Mrs E Laslett and Mrs M King the helpers. The 1 Orpington Company of The Girls’ Life Brigade was formed.

We took part in new and varied activities and had such fun. More girlsjoined us and we ran out of space, so the Cadets moved to a Friday,Our first Camp was at St Mary’s Bay, Kent in 1952. Since then we havebeen to - Hastings, Herne Bay, Bognor Regis, Eastbourne, Bournemouth,Lowestoft, the Isle of Wight and Jersey - to name a few places.

We enjoyed travelling by coach, double decker bus, tram, minibus andferry. Camp was about fun and exciting activities, learning to live witheach other, look after ourselves and without Mum and Dad!

There have been six Captains and twenty Officers during the past 70years - and many, many girls!

It would mean being on duty during the Sunday morning service about onceevery 6 weeks and you would need to have a DBS check carried out.

If you feel you are called to serve in this way please speak toDavid Jones or Helen Stockman for more information.

The government has announced that Ebbsfleet will be one of the first new‘garden cities’ in the UK which will include up to 15,000 new homes andmajor theme park.  As a result, there is greater emphasis on building newhomes in the area, a development corporation has been formed and thegovernment are putting more financial resources into the area. The paceof housebuilding is now expected to increase.

Penny Marsh has been successful in being appointed as an independentmember of the planning committee for the Ebbsfleet Garden City, which isboth a great opportunity and challenge.  She continues to make networkingwith the newly formed development corporation, local councils, developers, schools, churches and denominational leaders in Kent a priority.  It is acomplex and rapidly changing scene, so this can be frustrating at times, butworthwhile, when opportunities for mission emerge as a result.

The Kent Thameside Church Planting project is SEBA’s response to theenormous mission opportunities in North Kent.

Currently there are several strands to this work...1 Preparing for a new church for Castle Hill2 Northfleet North3 Café Church @ Bluewater4 Ebbsfleet Garden City Networking.

Castle Hill is the first phase of development in the Ebbsfleet Valley and thereare now 75 homes occupied.  Eventually there will be around 1500 homes,a primary school, and local centre.  In September 2014, a small group beganmeeting to pray and work towards planting a church in Castle Hill.  Thisgroup meets fortnightly.

We praise and thank God for…

● The team / home group that meets fortnightly to prepare to planta new church in Castle Hill.

● The provision of an interim community space which can be usedfor activities in Castle Hill and other parts of Ebbsfleet Garden City.We are currently fund raising to purchase a luxury coach whichcan be converted for this purpose - ‘The E-bus project’.

● That God will call people to move into Castle Hill and other partsof Ebbsfleet who will want to be part of something new for thearea.

Sunday April 17Afternoon Tea with Spring Golden Service

The “You Are Special” team plans two afternoon events each year. Our first is the Spring Golden Service which will take place on

Sunday April 17 in the afternoon. We look forward to the lighter eveningsand warmer weather that spring should bring!

Holiday At Home – 2016Plans are also coming together for our 4 Holiday at Home hereat OBC, dates have been set, ideas are being shared and explored!!

For those who now find going on holiday difficult and for those who liveon their own, the idea behind Holiday at Home is to provide something to lookforward to; to join together with others to enjoy a couple of days as you wouldwhen you go on holiday. It’s also an opportunity to build relationships with othersmaybe family, neighbours or friends who don’t come to church, please speak toJo Lewis or Heather Salzer if you would like to invite someone.

This year we are looking to have a change and offer an outing for the day onFriday 29 July followed by a day together on Sunday 31 July, with a roast lunchfollowing the service and an afternoon of fun and fellowship together back atOBC.

We thank God for the many people who are involved in providing these events, the many who prepare food, spend time with our guests, clear up and prepareactivities, serve food and perform so many other tasks, new helpers are alwayswelcome. We are always so pleased to have younger helpers too (11+), theirenergy and enthusiasm is great and we would love to see any of you who cancommit this year.

We do look forward to seeing our regulars again this year and others perhaps forthe first time. Please continue to pray for all the people who will come, for allthe plans and preparations ahead and that it may all be blessed by God as weshow His love for one another in this way.
