Orthopaedic essentials for primary care8 September 2018 Venue: Queen’s Hospital, Romford

Course convenor: Mr Ashok Acharya, Consultant Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgeon, Queen’s Hospital

Musculoskeletal (MSK) problems are the leading cause of Years Lost to Disability (YLD) in the UK, and after minor illnesses, the commonest cause of work limitations and working days lost. Furthermore, 20% of primary care consultations are for MSK problems (State of Musculoskeletal Heath 2017, Arthritis Research UK). Yet, the knowledge and understanding of MSK conditions and their management continues to be poor, largely due to inadequate coverage during undergraduate training.

This course is designed to fill the gaps in MSK knowledge of Primary Care professionals, who are at the forefront of MSK care. It will give them the confidence not only to diagnose and appropriately manage MSK conditions, but also inform them of the right time to escalate to secondary care.

The teaching will take the form of:

• Hands-on joint and soft tissue injections workshops• Demonstration of examination techniques• Didactic lectures

The faculty for this course has been carefully chosen, not only for their in-depth knowledge of MSK pathologies, but also for their communicative and teaching ability. They include experienced Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeons and GP’s, who will be readily available throughout the day to answer ‘all the MSK questions that you ever had, but did not know who to ask’!
