Introduction

• Orthopaedic Surgeons use film x-rays to plan procedures. The most common are – joint replacement – by overlaying acetate templates to select

and position prostheses– Paediatric assessment – measuring – Trauma surgery – reduction and selection of plates and nails– Osteotomy

What does Digital Planning Deliver?

• Completes the PACS for orthopaedic surgeons so they can accept film being switched off

• Offers greater convenience compared with traditional methods (films and acetates, etc.)

• Offers greater accuracy than traditional methods• Creates audit trail• Facilitates inventory management

Principle issues to consider

• Availability of digital templating– UK surgeons often plan and template immediately before the

surgical procedure– Some may choose to template in advance and off site– Process typically takes 1 to 3 minutes– Completed plans stored back to patient record in PACS– Surgeons may review plans in group meetings before

surgery– Templated image may need to be reviewed in theatre– Orthopaedic rep can be involved in planning


Issues for Radiology

• Accurate scaling requires a marker on every image• Marker should be placed in the plane of interest• Many different types of marker available. Discs

recommended.
