CHARACTER SKETCH

SWAMIIn this story we meet Swami who is the protagonist. Swami like any other kid does not like

school and wishes that the school is reduced to dust by an earthquake. It‘s Monday morning and Swami lies to his mother to get a day off, luckily he gets it. Trouble brews when his stubborn father is hell-bent on sending him off to school even when Swami says he has a headache. From then on we see the active imagination of a boy who conjures stories after stories against his teacher Samuel, the atrocities on students so that he is not send to school. But all of it goes against him and forcefully sends him to school bh he stubborn father to Albert Mission School with a letter which he has to deliver to his headmaster and get an acknowledgment from him. Perfectly aware that his son is only making excuses for not going to school by claiming that his teacher Samuel is a sadist who will cane him till he draws blood, the father calls his son's bluff and warns him: ''Don't come to me for help even if Samuel throttles you. You deserve your Samuel. The writer gives remarkable insights to Swami’s mind. The lies which are an outcome of Swami’s active imagination to the guilt that weighs down Swami when he feels that Samuel will lose his job are all captured in vivid details. Narayan never fails to capture the inner turmoil as well as the joys and aspiration of any character – a feature of any great

SAMUELSamuel teacher taught Arithmetic in Swami‘s class in the morning and History in the evening.

In the Arithmetic class he was not punished for coming late or for not doing his homework. He was not minded but just ignored. His headache was readily accepted as an excuse. To his astonishment, the teacher seemed to have developed tolerance and gentleness overnight. He waited for the History class in the evening to come. In the History class he tried in many crazy ways to provoke the teacher to beat him. He asked many wayward questions, shouted several times in the class and answered questions that were asked to others. Finally he succeeded in obtaining eight hot cane cuts on his palm. Thus, when the evening bell rang, with satisfaction and without feeling any guilt, he went to the Headmaster‘s room to deliver the letter from his father. Alas, the Headmaster was on leave for a week and the Assistant Headmaster Samuel teacher was in-charge of the Headmaster. He did not dare deliver the letter to the man. When he returned home his father called him a coward, and tore the letter to pieces.

SWAMI'S FATHERSwami's father is very strict person who had decided to make his son an ideal citizen. He is a stubborn

person and Swami hates his father's tenacity. It is out of love for his son that he files a complaint against Samuel. He knows his son's character clearly and is very observant and loving father.

On reaching the school I said good morning to the headmaster and asked whwther I might get in. He told me to get in and asked me whether I am Swmi's father. I said yes and told him that Swami was complaining aboutMr. Samuel. I also added that Smuel had behaved as though he was a undemocratic. The headmaster disagreed with it and said that if I met him personally I could find him very genial. I told him that I was / am very strict on my son. In "Games at Twilight" by Anita Desai, explain the character of Ravi. Ravi is a typical little boy, who likes to play games with his friends, and dreams of coming out triumphant in a game of hide 'n' seek. He displays a lot of typical little boy attributes: he loves playing games, he is excited, he braves the scary and dark garage in order to show his bravery and increase his odds of winning, he has a good nose -picking while hiding and thinking, and also gets distracted with daydreaming, like many little boys do. Then, at the end, when he realizes that they have all moved on with their games and completely forgotten him, he shows a very dramatic reaction:

"He felt his heart go heavy and ache inside him unbearably. He lay down full length on the damp grass, crushing his face into it, no longer crying, silenced by a terrible sense of his insignificance."

This reaction has traits of typical childlike behavior: it is dramatic, a bit overly emotional, and centered on a limited perspective based on their ideas of the world. However, Ravi displays an unusual sensitivity and introversion here. Instead of lashing out and bragging about his potential conquest in the garage, he quietly lies down and lets the weight of his own insignificance crush him. He bears the brunt alone, mourning quietly, on his own. He turns the pain inward, and abandons himself to it completely. So, Ravi is also a very inward and sensitive boy, with a tendency to feel emotions heavily and fully.

Ravi's Diary22nd January 2016 Friday

A bad day for me. In the afternoon we played hide and seek. Reghu was the catcher. I hid myself behind

the shed first. Then slowly alipped into the shed and hid for a long time. I want to become the champion – the

breaker of records. Reghu did not find me. I got out of the shed and touched the den. But they they won't

approve my victory. They said I broke the rule of the game. How come that. I won, I won. Even the elders too

not approve my victory. I am left, I am alienated, I am alone. Nobody on my side. But I am determined

REPORTED SPEECH Simply reported speech is saying what one said in our own (Reporters) way, without changing the sense of what is said. When reporting we make some changes in the person of the pronouns, tense of the verb, and time pointers or words of being and place.

Eg. “Arun, what are doing there?”, Teacher said. Teacher asked Arun what he was doing there.

Violence Strikes Again

Staff Reporter

Mexico, 26th June: In a shocking incident took place here late night, the inmate of a reputed hotel here had a narrow escape from an attempt of having his eyes gouged scooped out. The tourist, who is reported to have arrived here on a holiday trip, was walking across the street nearby the hotel at night. There were no street lights. Suddenly a stranger held him from his back and demanded his eyes. The stranger told the tourist that he wanted blue eyes to make a bouquet for his lady love. “I thought he came for money. But I was shocked to hear that he wanted my eyes,” said the tourist. Such incidents are reported to be on the rise in this part of the city. People complain that the police is inactive in this regard. When asked, the City Police Commissioner said that a case had been registered and the culprit would be arrested soon.

CHARACTER SKETCH OF THE BEGGAR

CHARACTER SKETCH OF THE KING

The king occupies the seat of power with the least concern for the poor. The king is irritated by the beggar s cry. He is so alienated from the unattractive realities of ordinary life of‟ the downtrodden. His language has only limited scope with no organic knowledge of life. The king has the illusion that he can stop the cry of the beggar by commanding him in person. The king can never solve the problem as he is indifferent and insensitive even towards the basic needs of the public.

THE BET By Anton Chekkov

The story ends with the lawyer escaping from the prison and not collecting the two millio n and the banker resuming his life. The lawyer has not only proved that he could endure fifteen years of solitary confinement, but he has proved that life imprisonment is indeed more humane because it permits study and meditation, thereby enabling at least some criminals to develop completely new characters. In the short story “The Bet,” Anton Chekov develops the character of the lawyer through the contrasting course of events in the story. In the beginning of the story, the lawyer is introduced as one of many “intellectual men” at a very elegant party thrown by the banker. This setting exudes wealth, money and power. The desire for greater wealth by the lawyer becomes evident as he wages a bet with the banker for two million dollars. The lawyer agrees to fif teen years in prison in exchange for this great sum of money.

In direct contrast to the setting at the beginning of the story, Chekov describes the lawyer’s imprisonment with a setting that is stark, gloomy and cold. The lawyer had one tiny window, a table, chair and bed. Over time the lawyer learns to relieve himself of his physical and mental anguish through the settings he finds in books. The lawyer writes, “In your books I have climbed to the peaks of Elburz and Mont Blank, and from there I have seen the s un rise and have watched it at evening flood the sky, the ocean, and the mountain-tops with gold and crimson.” By changing the setting, Chekov signals a new order of events as well as a new, evolving character. At the end of the story, the lawyer becomes enlightened by his books and no longer desires wealth. The lawyer’s character develops through Chekov’s skilled use of the sequence of events.

The beggar in Winthrop Parkhurst’s play, The Beggar and the King, is a very important character. It is around him that the play is woven around. The title itself tells us that the author’s sympathy is with the beggar, and not with the king. He is a representative of the poor suffering and down trodden people of the world. Unlike the ordinary beggars he is very bold and outspoken. When the king hears his voice he orders his men to bind him and gag him. He even asks them to cut off his tongue. But the servant informs him that when they cut off his tongue he grew another. When he is brought before the king he is not ready to obey even a single command of the king. He tells that the king’s words are like a foolish tinkling in his ears. He also adds that it is better to be born as a beggar than a king like him. The king asks the beggar to apologize for his impudence and stop crying in the streets. But the beggar retorted that if the king throws away his crown he will stop crying for bread. He stands adamant like a rock on the face of the king’s repeated commands. He reminds the king that he is stronger than a sea and a mountain. His words are more fearful than a hurricane. So even ten thousand of the king’s servants can’t stop him. It is his suffering that is his strength. Finally the beggar declares that he will cry for bread and fill up his belly. But one day he will lose his temper and then he will blow over the palace using his arms as iron rods. He will snap the king’s bones between his fingers. Then he will beat upon the large drum using the king’s head as drumstick. Hearing the beggar’s words the king orders his servant to catch him,but the servant was stunned by the beggar’s will power. The beggar’s voice is heard again. Frightened the king touches his crown as if to throw it, only to fit it firmly to his head.

The play ends with the beggar calling out for bread. It throws light on the fact that, however developed we are, the exploited suffering people are still there in our society.

**********The Bets tells about a young lawyer (main character) and a wealthy banker. They were debating

about capital punishment and life imprisonment. The banker said that capital punishment was the best. However, a young lawyer said that life imprisonment was more humane than capital punishment. His argument made the banker emotional then the banker challenged the lawyer to do a life imprisonment for fifteen years. If the lawyer could do it, the banker would pay him two millions and the bet happened. In the short story told that the banker was a wealthy man who had much money. He thought that he was the greatest person and his argument was the best. He against the lawyer’s argument and staked the lawyer two millions for doing life imprisonment.

Meanwhile, the lawyer also stated with his argument and he accepted the banker’s challenge. It showed that two persons tend to hold their argument. They thought that their selves argument were the best. Their actions were motivated by their self-importance and the egoism hold their mind and included to egoism. In “The Bet”, the lawyer regretted of his decision by accepting the banker’s bet which made him imprisoned and he could not communicate with others people. The lawyer’s regretness also showed when he finally realized the meaning of life by reading many books. He

Cinema – A Cultural DocumentEvery art form reflects the culture of the society from where it is being created. Cinema also is

not an exception to this. Our films of all periods record the cultural elements of our times in a way or the other.

The article 'Tea-shops in Malayalam Cinema' by Shri. C.S. Venkiteswaran tries to document the role played by tea-shops in the transformation that took place in the cultural domain of Kerala. According to the author tea-shops in Kerala initiated a revolution in our dining habits. Dining together is marked as a milestone in the fight against the prevailing caste system in Kerala then. The tea-shop was considered as a secular space where the only criterion for entry was the possession of money. Anybody could have tea and snacks id they had money with them. The customers were not belittled according to their caste or creed. The writer points out that the tea-shops emerged at a time when wages began to be paid in cash. It was also the time when people began to travel extensively for their livelihood.

The tea-shop represents a time and space free from the drudgery of work, and therefore teems with a wide cross-section of society. Along with genial villagers, one also finds local toughs, political workers and, of course, a host of strangers at the tea-shop. The sheer variety of the customers and the possible activities - reading newspapers, exchanging local news, discussing politics, gossiping or just chatting - makes the tea-shop an ideal place to reveal the ‘messages’ and concerns of the film.

As a medium the cinema goes far beyond mere entertainment to become a record of time and space. Its history is also the history of our culture: of our speech and body language; of our dress-codes; of our ways of living and making. So the recurring presence of tea-shops in Malayalam cinema indicates the continuing role of cinema as a document of our lives and times.

4. ‘You deserve your Samuel’ What does this indicate?. Prepare a write-up about an ideal student-teacher interaction on the basis of the story Father’s Help.

A teacher becomes favourite among the students when he is regular, expressive, guiding force and moreover very understanding. Samuel was lacking the quality of understanding Swami’s problems. In all other sense he was a good teacher. Students like Swami need certain corrections. Such students are in need of the service of teachers like Samuel. A good teacher knows the needs of students and impart the knowledge well. A good student should be always truthful and obedient in the class. He has to update himself with the daily class. A teacher who studies the minds of students well, becomes a successful teacher.
