What is AFECONET?AFECONET: AFECONET is a Pan-African knowledge network for locally controlled forest businesses in Africa. It aims at establishing and strengthening regional networks in Western, Southern, Eastern, Central, and Northern Africa which are affiliated to the Forest Connect globally and to the African Forest Forum regionally .
Objective: that Communities of Africa: locally control their forest businesses have the right to exploit their natural resources . diversified rural economiesGenerate and upscale innovative locally controlled forest business oriented solutions in AfricaHave improved livelihoods while bolstering national economic development
How is AFECONET going to help African Governments?
AFECONET will focus on the following Thematic areas in locally controlled forest businesses:
Creating multi-functional stakeholder platforms and networks Advocacy and policy influencingCreating regional resource centres for knowledge sharingDeveloping strategies which create a popular movement for smallholder forest and farm producers Developing public-private partnerships models for locally controlled forest businessesPromoting forest businesses beneficial to the people of AfricaConducting research including risk managementStrengthening governance/institutional capacities
Ultimately stimulate national knowledge hubs in Africa; by having a champion in each country to advocate for a more enabling environment for SMFEs and liaison with the broader AFECONET and Forest Connect networks
