HE MOMENTUM HASSHIFTED, newspaperreaders in America have

been inormed, in nouncertain terms, over

the past week. A series o ads in the LAand NY Times ull-page, emphaticont quoted the lions share o a veryshort blog by the critic Roger Ebertwhich launched last Friday. For BestPicture, it read, more and more, rommany dierent quarters, I hear aectionor Silver Linings Playbook. People tellme, I have a brother-in-law exactly likethat. I sense a groundswell.

Such last-gasp campaigning (votingclosed on Tuesday) marked HarveyWeinsteins nal chance to cheerlead

or the only horse he has let in therace. The super-producer usuallydominates awards season; this yearhe hasnt, despite some well-groomedponies. The Master opped at thebox ofce, then bagged neither a bestpicture nor best director nomination, despite ecstatic reviews. This Wein-stein has ascribed to his own inabilityto sufciently educate people aboutcinema. How can olks recognise a mas-terpiece i they dont have the trainingto know one when they see it? As orDjango Unchained, he has admitted heshould have sent out screeners, ratherthan assuming voters would make theeort to see it on the big screen. Twoqualied apologies, then, which beatup philistine peers as much as himsel, but admissions o ailure, none the less.

So he has cut his losses and insteadthrown his weight behind David O Rus-sells screwball romcom. Trouble is,or such a terric, photogenic lm, itsa strangely tough sell, as evidenced bythe switchback tactics employed to ogit. Silver Linings didnt y in Americawhen initially marketed as a dark com-edy. So, despite some noises o aboutits depiction o bipolar disorder, amore traditional awards campaign was

launched ocusing on the ways in whichit raises awareness o mental illness.Russell and star Robert De Niro both

spoke about their own amilies experi-ences o manic depression. The lm wasscreened to combat veterans in Iraq, who might identiy with the post-

traumatic-stress angle. A series oads were launched quoting oneDr Mehmet Oz, MD, who wrotethat the lm shows us thehumanity and similarities inthe lives o those who are chal-lenged with major disorders.

That was at the end o January. For the nal urlong, though, some-thing a little more eelgood wasrequired, and Ebert came through

bang on deadline. Silver Linings once adark comedy, then a sensitive drama isnow a redemptive romance. Yes, the

Ebert quote touches on the troubled-

amily-member angle, but it alsohighlights the lms st-pumpingclimax and cheery domesticity. The choice o photo to illustrate is

inspired: an embrace rom the nalscene thats as close to an everyper-

son cuddle as Bradley Cooper andJennier Lawrence can get. Weinsteindoesnt like losing. Maybe love reallycan save the day.Catherine Shoard
