SINSIDERThe Voice of the Osher Community

Dear OLLI Members,

The changes brought on by COVID-19 came quickly. As the country continues to grapple with the constantly changing situation, so do we – the OLLI staff. We continue to be guided by the directives from the University of Nebraska. Our highest priority is your health and safety.

We have done a lot of adapting to provide quality programming in the interim while preparing for the summer term. The implementation and use of online instruction as an alternative during the spring has opened many opportunities to bring OLLI members together in the virtual classroom, in online meetings and social opportunities on Zoom, a live, online, video conferencing tool. If you have not tried a Zoom course, don’t hesitate to embrace this opportunity. We will provide you with instruction on how to access and use Zoom.

I know that you have many questions. I hope that I have addressed some below.

What are your plans for offering summer courses?

We have planned a variety of programming for summer, including a few in-person courses tentatively scheduled for mid-July, to virtual classes on Zoom, original recorded OLLI courses and recorded programming from other sources.

Will I still get the summer catalog in the mail?

The summer catalog is available online on the OLLI website at olli.unl.edu. It is being mailed only to those who do not use a computer.

What should I know about future OLLI events, travel and fall courses?

The University plans to reopen for the fall. Chancellor Ronnie Green says, “Re-opening our physical campus for the fall semester will be much more layered, more nuanced and more complex.” OLLI expects to offer in-person fall courses and events.

How has this situation affected the OLLI budget?

A large part of the OLLI budget is generated through membership and course fees. Canceling courses, as you can imagine, affected the OLLI budget for the remainder of this fiscal year. As we look forward, the OLLI Advisory Council and staff are trying to minimize the unanticipated financial consequences associated with COVID-19.

All of this work cannot be done without the continued engagement of many volunteers. This includes volunteer instructors, member volunteers and all of you. As you know, this is a changing situation and we appreciate your patience and flexibility in the coming weeks ahead.

WE ARE OLLI and I know that we will all pull together to do what is in the best interest of our OLLI community.

Dee Aguilar, Coordinator

MHospice: A Service for Your Family and Loved Ones20529CR

What is the difference between hospice and palliative care? When does your loved one need one of these services? While hospice care has been around for many years, palliative care is a fairly recent medical approach. It is a very difficult time of life and these medical professionals can help guide families through tough decisions.

Learn about how hospice works, how families may enroll their loved ones and what are the appropriate diagnoses required for hospice management. Know about a Medicare benefit that requires certain services be provided in hospice care. It is often difficult for doctors to recommend hospice for their patients, but it is a much better way for people at the end of life compared with in-hospital treatment.

LET’S GO TO THE MOVIES!Well, from the safety of our own living rooms, that is. We will watch the movies independently, then gather online to discuss them. This summer’s movies take us inside the lives of a diverse group of characters. Each faces an obstacle – religious, cultural, emotional, or geographical – that they must work through before they can find their happy ending.

How this worksRegister for the movies below and watch them on your own. Information and trivia about each movie, discussion questions and a link to join the Zoom discussion meeting will be emailed to all registrants one week prior to the scheduled meeting.

Each film is available to watch free from at least two sources. The sources are indicated in each description. Please note that these free sites generally include commercials, which cannot be fast-forwarded within the movies. All are also available for rent from additional sites, if you prefer to use a site with which you are already familiar.

Meet Us on the OLLI Party Line! We have created a Zoom “Party Line” where you can (virtually) meet face-to-face with your friends for casual discussion. A few parties have specific topics designed as conversation starters, but most are there for you to (virtually) mix and mingle to share some socialization during this time when it is unwise to do so in person. Drop in on your own schedule and at your own whim. You can participate as much or as little as you wish.

Registration is not necessary and participation is free. Use the Zoom links provided below to join any of the conversations. You can cut and paste the link into your Internet browser. It is best to download the Zoom app on your device (laptop, smart phone, tablet, etc.). Downloading the app will allow you to easily join a conversation/meeting with the link.

Kennedy's full acceptance speech at the 1960 Democratic National Convention in Los Angeles, Calif. The speech later became known as "The New Frontier." It sums up not what I intend to offer the American people, but what I intend to ask of them."

Nostalgic Movies

"Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde" (1920)This film is considered the first great American horror film. It illustrates the contributions to the motion pictures industry of two stars of the Silent Hall of Fame: John S. Robertson, director, and Martha Mansfield, actress.

Based on the famous novel by Robert Louis Stevenson, a benevolent doctor and an aspiring scientist, Dr. Jekyll (John Barrymore) is tempted to explore the two sides of his personality—the good one and the evil one. He invents a concoction that turns him into a monster and an antidote that turns him back to his normal good self.

Dr. Jekyll is the official suitor of his friend's daughter Millicent (Martha Mansfield). She is eager to be with him, but his split personality obsession prevents him from dedicating enough time to her. Then the evil side, named Mr. Hyde, starts his own life, chasing other women and becoming more and more violent. Millicent's father gets in harm's way by confronting Jekyll, and she herself gets in trouble, too. In the end, Dr. Jekyll pays the ultimate price for not being able to control his evil alter ego.

Martha Mansfield played her most famous role in this film. She was a true rising star, only to die at 24 in a freak fire accident three years later.

“As You Like It” (1936)In this first film version of William Shakespeare's classic pastoral comedy, Sir Laurence Olivier stars as Orlando while Elisabeth Bergner is Rosalind, his secret admirer who disguises herself as a boy in order to stay near to him. Nearly all of the actors involved had performed the work on stage previously, adding to the stellar overall performance. A particular highlight is Olivier's magnificent delivery of the famous "All the world's a stage..." monologue.

“A Star Is Born” (1937)Esther Blodgett (Janet Gaynor) is just another starry-eyed farm kid trying to break into the movies. Waitressing at a Hollywood party, she catches the eye of alcoholic star Norman Maine (Fredric March), is given a test, and is caught up in the Hollywood glamor machine. She and her idol Norman marry, but his career abruptly dwindles to nothing. This was Lana Turner's film debut as an extra.

“Meet John Doe” (1941)As a parting shot, fired reporter Ann Mitchell prints a fake letter from unemployed "John Doe," who threatens suicide in protest of social ills. The paper is forced to rehire Ann and hires John Willoughby to impersonate "Doe." Ann and her bosses cynically milk the story for all its worth, until the made-up "John Doe" philosophy starts a whole political movement. At last everyone, even Ann, takes her creation seriously, but publisher D.B. Norton has a secret plan.

Three Stooges (4 Episodes)These four episodes of the Three Stooges include “Disorder in the Court,” “Brideless Groom,” “Sing a Song of Six Pants” and “Malice in the Palace.”
