days. Then he briefed us about the sexual harassment training and that all

families were briefed at COANG family day. Our new Wing Commander is Col

Dunston. The Greeley squadron 137 SWS is now the 233 Space Group with

There will be a 10 percent reduction in the manning of the COANG in FY 2014. The

Active Associate program with the USAF is on hold at this time. CW5 David Carter was me-

morialized at the Army Aviation Support Facility for his being shot down in Afghanistan while

flying a Chinook helicopter flying Seal Team Six. COANG participated in the NATO “Huddles”

program in Europe since the Guard is up to 46% of the total force because of the current “up

tempo” in the military with multiple fronts. Col Dan Wright is the new 460th Space Wing

Commander. ADF is currently expanding its building of new facilities. The old 120 TFS

building is the new COANG Security Police building.

Dewey briefed us about the progress of the calendar project and will have it ready some-

time in September with 18 months starting in January 2014. It should be 12” by 19” and sell

for $15.

Jan briefed us about COANG Family day August 4th. Dale Bristol and Susan and Mike

Schnurstein helped with the OSOTMG table.

If you are visiting the VA clinic at Fitzsimons, do not park in the Children’s Hospital lot or

you will be towed.

Jan Axton for Sick Call.

Dave Brubeck, who passed last December, will be memorialized at Ft. Logan Cemetery on 21

August.

Veteran’s Salute Luncheon at Wings Over The Rockies Museum is November 6, 2013. See

DO Neary for tickets by September 25th to receive the $18 price.

Joyce Saitti will be attending the EANGAUS conference in Sioux Falls South Dakota on the

17th of August. Next year, on the last weekend of April, NGACO will host a Military Ball in

Denver. West Virginia hosted the National Boy Scout Jamboree last month and performed

military environmental projects for the community.

Air Heritage Group will be hosting a display at the Rocky Mountain Airport from 16-18 Au-

gust. Decade panel is in the hands of Chief Greenwood.

Pete Triolo and Golden Sherman were present for the birthday celebration.

The next meeting will be OCTOBER 1ST, 2013.

NOTE: WE NEED HOWDY DUTY STORIES. AFTER THIS ISSUE, I DON’T HAVE ANY MORE STORIES TO PUBLISH. SEND YOUR EXPERIENCE ABOUT YOUR TIME IN THE MIL-ITARY OR INTERESTING EXPERIENCE WITH YOUR COM-RADES-IN–ARMS TO DEWEY HICKS OR PAUL TURNER.

SEPTEMBER 2013 MINUTES

Pledge of Allegiance to the U.S. flag was lead by DO Neary.

No 1st timers.

The next Retiree’s Day at Buckley AFB will be November 2 at the USAF Leadership

Development Center.

Dewey brief us about the calendar project and it should be ready for printing by the

end of September and available for $15. This project will have some corrections but ad-

ditional airplanes such as the C-131(Flintsone III), O-2, B-26, C-45 and T-6 will be

put in the next calendar project, not this one.

See DO Neary for payment for the Veterans Salute, November 6th. Payment is due

by 25th of September to receive the discount of $18. SEE ATTACHED SAMPLE. Joyce briefed us about the NGAUS conference in South Dakota. Sequestration is hurt-

ing this organization too and we need more members to support worthy causes such as

the scholarship program. There are possible Tricare changes and we need the members

to lobby and prevent increased medical premiums. Military ball will be the last weekend

of April 2014 in Denver.

HOWDY DUTY BY ART SHARPLEY

My name is Art Sharpley. I joined the Colorado Air Guard in May 1956. In November 1956, I hired

on the Air Tech Force as the tool room clerk/tire builder. Back then, the Colorado Guard had F-80s and

F-86F Redeye Birds. The unit transitioned to F-86Ds in 1958 and later F-86Ls and F-86F Redeye

Birds. After a year in the tool crib, Bill Haggerty put me to work on his dock. There, Doug Gill taught

me among other things, how to swim and do the back stroke in the drip pans. F-86 engine pulls and the

left main well were mine. The F-86 would drown you with fuel, hydraulic fluid, and oil. It would run down

your sleeve and out your pant legs. As Gill said to me one day when we were about to begin an engine

pull, “Stick it and bleed it Art”

In December of 1960 the unit transitioned to the F-100C and later that year the 1961 Berlin

Call Up. That shuffle put me on The Flight Line. In 1964 I became the crew chief of F-100C 54-2066

“known to most on the line as one of the Luke AFB Pigs”. Ugly looking ol’ bird.

Along came 1968. The Pueblo Crisis and call to active duty and the Vietnam deployment. In Vi-

etnam, I became “B Flight” flight chief. 12 midnight to 12 noon. George Erickson and Glen Simpson be-

came the crew chiefs of 54-2066.

Jam Love recently asked about pictures and memorabilia of the 120th in Vietnam. Enclosed is the

one I’m most proud of: 54-2066 and George, Glen, and Bill Wilson, the assigned pilot. Taken on 3 or 4

June 1968, Bill had just returned from a mission. The sign says “1st 120th Aircraft To Fly 100 Mis-

sions”. The photo op was late. George has three fingers stuck in the air with a big grin. It was actually

103 missions. The sq started flying Nam missions on 4May1968 with 18 aircraft assigned and cranked

out 1000 missions by 13June1968. Those two hard working guys had done more than 10% of that total

in 30 days. I’m very proud of them. Two unsung heroes in my book.

We lived out our year in Vietnam with several mortar attacks. A couple sticks out in my memory.

26Jan1969 the longest and hardest day of my life. But I’ll reserve that story for another time.

Somewhere in the dark of the night in Vietnam, I told myself the next war I go to, that I’d be

better off in an air conditioned cockpit and be a moving target.

I always wanted to fly. My flying job came in 1972. I transferred to the Air Force Reserves and

became a C-141 Transport Flight Engineer with the A.L.S. at Travis AFB, CA. I flew with them until

March 1993 and was retired out with the Hi Year tenure program and then was transferred to the inac-

tive reserves until I was 60 years old. I had 41 years 7 months total service. I had flown all over the

world with several missions in Desert Storm 1990-1991 with 5000 + flying hours in that air conditioned

cockpit moving target I told you about.

15 years after I had left the Colorado Air Guard, I was being selected for some special missions

and I was introduced to a group of General Officers as “one of Joe Moffit’s Boys”. A real tribute to the

training and background reputation of the Colorado Air Guard.

One more thing. I too participated in lots of Bill Haggarty’s hanger sweeping details and I can al-

ways remember Bill pushing a broom along with the rest of us. Bill Haggerty, a real leader and teacher.

Thanks Bill.

I now live in Penrose Colorado and I know that the jet noise I hear over Fort Carson today indi-

cates that the Colorado Air Guard is still awake so I sleep well at nite.

Fly safe guys

Msgt Art Sharpley

History of the Other Side of the Mountain Gang

In the early sixties a half dozen of the Air National Guard Retiree’s met atthe old CAMANA Club for lunch and a beer or two around 1:30 p.m. After afew hours, (about 5p.m.) of war stories it was time to head home whensomeone suggested they should do this again and invite others to join. Theywanted to keep in touch with old friends and forgive those who have tickedthem off. Nothing fancy, jeans, sport shirts, and tennis shoes. No written rulesor regulations since they never followed them in the past and weren’t tochange. No rank in this group. They were on a first name basis – as it alwayshad been for years. General (that’s his first name) Joe Moffitt would forgetand raise his voice sometimes, but the group didn’t jump as fast or as theyused to.

Any Buckley retiree was welcome to join them, military or civilian, fromvarious military organizations on base. Meetings were held at the CAMANAClub the first Tuesday of the month and a poverty basket passed at meetingsand donations were received for a monthly newsletter; get well, sympathycards, postage and birthday cupcakes.

Like the organizations founding fathers (many have left us) we currentmembers like to keep informed with what’s happening with our currentguard members. A lot of us spent many years building and keeping astandard for the Colorado Air National Guard. We knew our guard unit couldperform and execute the mission required of us and largely due to ourexperience and skills. We did this with outdated airplanes and equipmentand for fewer dollars!!!

The“”Sounds of Freedom”“

This calendar is titled the “Sounds of Freedom” because each aircraft hasa distinct sound of its own. An aircraft mechanic can tell the different aircraftthat they worked on by their distinct sound. An A-7 “sounds” completelydifferent from an F-16, as a KC-135 “sounds” different than a T-43. The aircraftdepicted over the years represent the “Sounds of Freedom”
