TRANSCRIPT
• A holistic form to health care based on manual manipulation. • Osteopathy is an effective therapy for the treatment of pain, e.g. back,
neck, head and foot pain and other complaints such as asthma, arthritis and digestive, postural and stress-related problems.
• Osteopaths deal regularly with patients who have been injured in the workplace, at home or while playing sport.
• Osteopaths do not simply concentrate on treating the problem area, but use gentle manual techniques to balance the systems of the whole body thus treating the underlying cause of the issue.
• Treatment involves carefully moving the patient's body about (articulation), gentle stretching and relaxation techniques on muscles and other soft tissues and occasionally a manipulation in the back or neck.
• For example, although a pain may be felt in the shoulder, the root cause of the pain may be an issue with the feet and that is where the treatment may be centred.
• If a patient does not want their back or neck 'clicked', the osteopath is able to use less vigorous techniques to achieve the same results.
OSTEOPATHY
Biodynamic Osteopathy
• Osteopaths believe that the body is capable of healing itself and
Biodynamic Osteopathy is an effective way to work towards this
goal.
• The term 'Thinking Fingers' is used to describe the light touching
used in Biodynamic Osteopathy to sense and deal with imbalances
and other issues within the body.
• The method requires rigorous training before the therapist can
become adept.
• Biodynamic Osteopathic methods can be applied in isolation but
are frequently incorporated within regular osteopathic treatments.
• A suitably trained therapist is able to determine what level of
Biodynamic Osteopathy might be suitable in a treatment.
FDM (fascial distortion model)
• A fascia is a band of connective tissue that encloses and
separates muscles and other internal organs.
• FDM is an anatomical model in which many muscle/skeletal injuries
are considered the result of alterations, or distortions, of the fascia.
• With FDM a very deep pressure is applied to relieve the distortion,
so it can be uncomfortable.
• Treatment can always be adjusted to make it both effective and
tolerable.
• Some acute and chronic injuries can respond more quickly to FDM
treatment than to other approaches, e.g. Sprained ankle, pulled
muscle, tendonitis and whiplash.
ATLASLOGY• The Atlas is the top vertebra of the spine • It is considered the most important bone of the spinal column as it supports
the head and, thus, plays a central role in maintaining the balance of the entire body.
• As a result, any misalignment of the Atlas bone can have significant implications elsewhere
• Treatment involves a very gentle pulsing touch with the two middle fingers • The Atlaslogy therapist feels it a barely detectable movement of the
Atlas. Sensitive clients can also feel this "vibrating“• During a rest after the treatment different processes are running in the body• In particular, the Atlas, as well as the entire spinal column, will tend to
rebalance naturally• Sensitive clients report a pleasant tingling at various parts of the body, warmth
or sometimes light passing pain • It is often reported that the client has fallen into a deep, relaxing sleep
Anatomy – 1st Cervical vertebra is the Atlas
- Important structures pass through the Atlas:
• Spinal cord goes through the big opening
• Lateral holes – Important blood vessels to the brain
Anatomy -
The autonomous
nervous system
Sympathetic/
Parasympathetic(Supply all organs)
The two systems suport each
other, one is more active during
the day, the other more during
the night. But mostly they are
not in balance.

Anatomy – 3 of 12 Cranial nerves
• N. Vagus
• auditory canal
• throat
• oesophagus
• heart
• lung
• Gastrointestinal

• N. Accessorius- Neck and ShoulderM. Trapezius
M. Sternocleidomastoideus
• N. GlossopharyngeusRear tongue
Mm. of the throat
Swallow, taste
Ear gland
• All three mentioned nerves leave the skull true a hole at the cranial base and pass the Atlas bone.
Effect of Atlas misalignment:
Latest scientific studies say that: compression or inflammation of the above mentioned structures by atlas misalignment can cause many chronic pains and symptoms for example: Muscle tension, migraine, dizziness, sciatica (Atlas shift-Lubal 5 shift parallel) high Blood Pressure, concentration, eyes, ears etc.
When can the Atlas dislocate?
Birth
Mental or physical trauma, eg. Whiplash
Sleeping on your stomach

Atlas shift and body posture
• Weight of head - 5-6 kg
• Skull outside the centre line
• Displacement of the body's midline
• The muscular-skeletal system out of balance
• Scoliosis
Effect of the treatment
• Atlas centering
• Best possible functioning nervous system
• Activation of the self-healing process
• Centering the 5th Lumbal vertebra
• Replacement of the pelvis rotation
• Best possible statics of the spine
• Spontaneous improvement
Reactions
• Possible first worsening of symptoms
because of:
• Improvement of Information-Flow both ways
• Vegetative reactions e.g. sweating
• pain in another areas
• Spontaneous improvement
WHO?Who do Osteopaths see?
Everyone! Our patients include: sportsmen, sportswomen, athletes, office workers, manual workers, singers, musicians, dancers, yogis, teenagers, adults and the elderly
WHY?
The combination of different kind of treatments enables me to accurately assess clients and to suggest treatments that are tailored to the particular needs of the individual
Some clients went already thru an odyssey: Doctor, medication, operation etc.Sometimes the problem can not be solved. Or some clients goes to an Osteopath because it was recommended.
WHAT?These are some of the most common conditions that osteopaths see: Aches and Pains Anterior Knee Pain (Patellofemoral Syndrome) Arthritic Pain Backache Back Pain Bursitis Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Circulatory Problems (local and minor) Cramp Digestion Problems Fibromyalgia (Fibrositis) Frozen Shoulder (Adhesive Capsulitis) Golfer's Elbow (Medial Epicondylitis) Headaches (Cervicogenic and Tension Type) Inability to Relax Joint Pains Low Back Pain (Lumbago) Lower Back Tension, Soreness and Stiffness
Muscular Aches and Spasms Muscle Tension Myofascial Pain Syndrome Nerve Pain (Neuralgia) Non-Specific Low Back Pain Plantar Fasciitis Repetitive Strain Injury (RSI) Rheumatic Pain Rheumatism Rotator Cuff Syndrome Runner's Knee (Iliotibial Band Syndrome) Sciatica (Nerve Root Irritation) Spasms Sports Injuries (minor) Tendonitis Tennis Elbow (Lateral Epicondylitis) Tenosynovitis Tension Thoracic Outlet Syndrome Trigger Point Pain
How many sessions are required?
• First Treatment: Information, patient history
• Follow-up: first 3 once a week, then once a month up to 6-10 sessions
• Depending on the individual progress
• Annual controls or
• When needed / after traumatic events
Limitations of Osteopathy/Atlaslogy
in Effectiveness:
• Diseases which cause defects on the CNS:
• multiple sclerosis
• Alzheimer
• Paralysis
• At the skeleton:
• M. Bechterew - ossification
• Broken vertebra bodies
• Discs no longer present
IMPORTANT!
• I do not take anyone away from the
doctor's visit
• I do not consider anyone from an
operation
• I always give my best
• I do not take prescribed medication
away or change the dosage
Recommendations to clients:
• Positive thinking and acting
• Never again sleep on your stomach
• Stretching and gym after getting up
• Daily walks on the fresh air
• 2-3 L Liquid per day
• No high-risk sports or hard work after a treatment
