The APWU Union Hall Officewill be closed for theThanksgiving Holiday,

Thursday, November 28, 2019 and

Friday, November 29, 2019.

Have a Happy Thanksgiving!

It’s that time again. We have a new Plant Manager, James Shaf-fer. I thought Terry Morrow would last a little longer. I haven’t heard anything bad about the new guy. I have heard he’s easy to talk to.

Open Season for the Health Plan starts on November 11 and runs through December 9. Informa-tion will be posted on the APWU Bulletin Boards about the APWU Health Plan.

Treniece Thompson is our Health Plan Representative. The Health Fair at City Gate will be held on November 7th from 6 - 10am and from 3 -7:30pm. Stop by the APWU table if you have any questions. The Health Fair will be held at Twin Rivers on November 8th from 9am - 3pm. There will be brochures to

compare the plans. If you miss the Health Fair, we will have additional brochures in the Union Cubicles and at the Union Hall.

The Union recently had a call from one of the PSE’s about an an-nual leave request. This lady put in a request and did not receive an an-swer back. She contacted the Union two months later. I am reminded by Steward Angie Lyshe that not all PSE’s know the rules. This lady did not know Management has 48 hours to give your 3971 back approved or denied. If you have a question about any leave requests, ask for a steward or call the Union Hall.

We have purchased a projector system for the Union Hall. It should be installed by the OSU/Michigan game. Come watch the game, eat some good food, win a door prize and have a great time. There is not a charge to come to the game. Ev-erything is free.

I just returned from the All Craft Conference in Las Vegas. Our Lo-cal sent fifteen officers and stewards to the Conference. This conference has some of the best training avail-able to our stewards. These confer-ences are good for the stewards in that we hear what problems other

Locals are facing and how they deal with them. We all face the same problems from abusive supervisors to crossing crafts.

The upcoming Election in 2020 is not too far away to start planning. Get registered to vote if you are not. APWU members should vote for politicians that support us. There are many ways to participate. Start-ing with registering people to vote, mailing out information, door to door canvassing and phone banking.

The AFL-CIO is always looking for volunteers.

I’ll close with an invitation to come out to a Union Meeting. We are averaging about 20-25 mem-bers a meeting. We will be giving out additional gift cards for the November Monthly Meeting due to Thanksgiving. Hope to see you there.

Kim Harrington-ferguson

Sadly, a few weeks ago we found out that we have lost our past President, William Mitchell. Bill was a wonder-ful leader of this Chapter. He was a dedicated Union man, supporting the Chapter, the Local and National. He will be sadly missed. Prayers to his family.

Fall is here, kind of. Waking up to a cool morning, only to be overdressed in the afternoon.

We have seen a nice increase in our membership in the Retirees Chapter. We have a good turn out at our monthly meetings. Next month our meeting is November 18, 2019. Anyone who was a member of the APWU and is retired can join the Retirees Chapter. By being a member of the Chapter, you can keep your APWU Health Insurance after retirement, you also get the opportunity to attend the functions of the Local.

On November 30, 2019 there is a big OSU/Michigan Party at the Union Hall 610 Lancaster Ave, Reynoldsburg. There will be lots of food, drinks and door prizes. The game starts at Noon. It is a free event. Hope to see you there.

Question from the floorI am a PSE. My bid is in Auto-

mation and I am senior to two other PSE’s why do I have to work outside of my unit and the junior employees stay to work in my unit, shouldn’t they be moved first since I am senior to them?ANSWER

As a PSE you do not hold a “bid” and as such you can be moved from one work area to another since you do not hold a “bid”. PSE seniority is im-portant only as it pertains to where on the “seniority list” you fall so that you can be converted to a full time regular employee. Once you are converted to a full time regular employee you then begin a new seniority date.Question from the floor

I am a PSE and I have been told by my Supervisor that I can only work 4 hours why a grievance can’t be filed I thought I was guaranteed 8 hours a day.

ANSWERAs a PSE you are only guaran-

teed 4 hours this became effective June 13, 2019, the previous guaran-tee was for only 2 hours. If you are a PSE working in the City Stations such as Short North, Oakland Park, Beechwold to name a few you are guaranteed to work 4 hours within 12 hours and it is not guaranteed that you will work these 4 hours consecutively you can be asked to work 2 hours from 8am to 10am and again noon to 2pm. If you work in an area office such as Sunbury or Reynoldsburg you are also only guaranteed to work 4 hours within 12 hours and these 4 hours can be split.Question from the floor

Why is it important to have an updated address with the post office or check and open any correspon-dence that I receive from the post office?

ANSWERAs an employee it is important

to have an updated address in case there are checks, newsletters or other communications that your employer needs to forward to you. For ex-ample, a national grievance was won and as such monetary checks are going too mailed to the address on file if your address is not up to date you will lose out on this money. It is also important in case there are time limits and a response needs to be provided within 14 days or less.Question from the floor

How will the new driverless robots affect the mail?ANSWER

The driverless robots will be used to dispatch mail from the bundle sorter and SPSS machines. The driverless robots have video cameras and as such they will record in a complete 360 degrees so please be aware of your surroundings.

PresiDeNts rePOrt R399 payments - If you are entitled to the payment and haven’t yet received it contact the last office that you worked at. There may be a check there waiting for you.

Labor Management Meeting- There has been a report of some water fountains at Citygate either not working properly or with damaged handles. If you know of any, please provide the union office with the location and we will relay that information to management. This includes stations as well.

The new automated machinery will be arriving at Citygate soon. Please keep a safe distance from them as they do not stop immediately. Do not in-terfere with their operation. They have video cameras on them and can record someone trying to impede them. This has happened in other locations. There has been some training about them. More may follow.

There are now directional arrows on the aisles at Citygate showing the direction of travel. Anyone operating machinery or bicycles needs to follow them. Also, even when pulling equipment you will need to follow the directional arrows.

Our contract is still in negotiations. The Postal Service is trying to push down wages and benefits. They are trying to compare us with similar oc-cupations and declaring that we do not require any training. A.P.W.U. National headquarters encourages us to wear something on the floor to show our support. We have stickers and also some wristbands to wear.

Station stewards - If you have any issues at stations please bring them up to your stewards so that we can address them. We cannot help if you do not make your steward aware of any problems.

Adult Party - We will be discussing the adult party and decide details later at tonights meeting.

We will be hosting a Buckeye football party at the end of November at the union hall. It is always a fun time and there will be door prizes available.
