a) Gandhara, 600-300 BC, Silver Shatamana, weight standard, 11.15g, Two symbol type. AA symbol Pattern. Geometrical mark. Bar type flan & Scyphate. The present coin, with a broad and medium flan, represents the early phase of this janapada. (Rajgor Dilip, Series 34, Type 540, pp.101). Extremely fine, rare.

Gandhara extended from Kabul in Afghanistan to Peshawar in Pakistan, with capital at Taxila. It was a very ancient janapada, finding multiple references in Mahabharata. Gandhari, the mother of Kauravas was a princess of Gandhara. Its territories included east Afghanistan and north-west of the Punjab (modern districts of Peshawar and Rawalpindi)

b) Vajji, 575-450 BC, Silver Double Karshapana, 7.02g, Single Symbol Coin. Extremely fine, rare.

Vajjis were the most important republic of Buddhist era, situated in modern Vaishali-Muzaffarpur districts of Bihar. Their references are replete in numerous chronicles. The Vajjis or Vrijjis included eight confederated clans of whom the Licchhavis were the most important. The mother of Bhagwan

Mahavira was a Licchavi princess. Vaishali (modern Basarh in the Vaishali District of North Bihar) was their capital. The Second Buddhist Council was held at Vaishali.

c) Vatsa, 500-410 BC, Silver Karshapana, 3.53g, Four Symbol Coin, ABCD pattern, Elephant, Bow/Arrow, Scorpion with sun above, Scorpion with fish above. (Rajgor Dilip, Series 78, pp.181-182). Extremely fine, rare.

Located near Allahabad district of UP, on northern bank of Yamuna river with capital at Kaushambi. The Puranas give a list of 27 kings of Kaushambi from Parikshit to Kshema. Udayana was its famous ruler, a contemporary of the Lord Buddha.

d) Magadha, 600-200 BC, Silver Karshapana, 3.45g, five Symbol Coin, ABCDE pattern. Six-armed symbol, Sun, Four squares with dots inside, Wheel within a square, elephant to right. (Gupta/Hardaker, Series-I, Var.-48; Rajgor Dilip, Series 12, var. 112, pp.43). Extremely fine+, extremely rare in this condition.

Magadha was one of the most prominent and prosperous of mahajanpadas. Profusely referred to in Rig Veda, Atharva Veda, Mahabharata, Puranas and Buddhist & Jain literature of the time, its territories corresponded to the modern districts of Patna and Gaya in southern Bihar and parts of Bengal in

the east. The capital city of Pataliputra (patna). Its earliest capital was Girivraja or Rajagriha (modern Rajgir). It was an active center of Jainism in ancient times. The first Buddhist Council was held in Rajagriha in the Vaibhara Hills.

1 The silver punch-marked coins, issued by various janapadas during the times of Lord Buddha

and Lord Mahavira are India's earliest coins ever. The term 'janapada' refers to ancient Indian kingdoms that existed between the sixth and third centuries BC. Although the names of one hundred and seventy five janapadas are listed in 'Bhuvankosha' chapters of the Puranas, ancient

Buddhist texts like Anguttara Nikaya make frequent references to sixteen great kingdoms and

republics (Solas Mahajanapadas) which had evolved and flourished in a belt stretching from Gandhara in the northwest to Anga in the eastern part of the Indian subcontinent and included parts of the trans-Vindhyan region; prior to the rise of Jainism and Buddhism in India. These Janapadas, rose to prominence in around 600 BC and except for Magadha, which subdued them all, retained their independence for very brief periods only. Most of the janapadas never issued coins. Only a handful of janapadas, major ones listed in Anguttara Nikaya (as sodasa mahajanapadas or 16 great kingdoms) of the times of Buddha (Jain literature also lists

Mahajanpadas with little change of names and some references in the Puranas also); were prominent enough to have issued punch-marked coins, also known as local type PMCs, because their find-spots are generally restricted to the geographical area of the respective janapada and also due to which factor, most of this series is extremely rare. This is a collection of historical importance, a great opportunity

to acquire the complete set of all the 16 mahajanpadas (as listed in Anguttara Nikaya) as a single lot. First ever appeared on a sale. Exceedingly rare.

e) Kashi, 600-465 BC, Silver Vimshatika, 4.60g, Four symbol Coin, ABCC pattern. Geometrical symbols. (Rajgor Dilip, Series 58, pp.138-148). Extremely fine, Very rare.

Kashi Janapada (with capital at Varanasi) comprised of modern day Varanasi, Jaunpur, Ghazipur & Mirzapur districts of eastern U.P. It was one of the most important janapadas of ancient India. Engaged in incessant battles with neighboring Kosala, it lost its independence rather early (at the hands of Ajatshatru of Magadha, who was a contemporary of Buddha). A short-lived independence makes its coinage extremely rare.

f) Chedi, 500-400 BC, Silver Karshapana, 3.43g, Four symbol Coin. ABCC pattern. Six-armed symbol and geometric symbols.

Chedi Situated to the south of Vatsa (separated by Yamuna river), it was west of Kashi, east of Avanti and south-east of Shurasena and Matsya

janapadas (modern Bundelkhand area of UP and north MP areas). It is earlier capital was Shuktimati (later shifted to Tripuri). Its references are found in Chetiya Jataka and Janavasabha Sutta.

g) Kosala, 525-465 BC, Silver Karshapana, 2.47g, Four symbol Coin, ABCD pattern. 3 'S' symbol, Crescent and Circle with Arrows, Taurine in shield, Elephant to Right. Very fine+, rare.

Kosala was one of the strongest mahajanapadas of ancient India. Its earliest capital was Ayodhya and then Shravasti. It finds numerous references in Ramayan, Mahabharata and Jataka tales. In around 525 BC, its king Kamsa annexed Kashi and was titled Baranasiggaho (seizer of Banaras). It is another famous King; Prasenjit was a contemporary of Buddha. The country of Kosalas was located to the north-west of Magadha with its capital at Savatthi (Sravasti). It was located about 60 miles north of modern Ayodhya at the border of Gonda and Behraich districts in the Sahet-Mahet region. Its territory corresponding to the modern Awadh i.e Central and Eastern Uttar Pradesh.

h) Kamboja, 500-400 BC, Silver Karshapana, weight standard, 2.78g, single symbol type. Geometrical mark. (Hardaker T., Numismatic Digest, IIRNS Nasik, Vol.-29-30 (2005-2006). Extremely fine, extremely rare.

Ancient Kamboja is known to have comprised regions on either side of the Hindukush. The cis-Hindukush region from Nurestan up to Rajauri in southwest of Kashmir sharing borders with the Daradas and the Gandharas constituted the Kamboja country. The capital of Kamboja was probably

Rajapura (modern Rajori) in the south-west of Kashmir.

i) Anga, 550-500 BC, Copper Unit, 7.12g, Five symbol on obv. Four on rev. symbol Coin, Geometric symbols. Extremely fine, extremely rare.

Anga was an important janapada of pre-Buddhist era, situated in modern Bhagalpur-Munger districts of Bihar. One of the earliest janapadas to lose independence at the hands of Bimbisara of Magadha, with whom it shared boundary, demarcated by Champa (modern Chandan) river. Mentioned in Vinayak Pitaka and Mahabharata (Duryodhana made Karna, the king of Anga).

j) Ashmaka, 500-350 BC, Silver ½ Karshapana, 1.50g, Four Symbol Coin, ABCC pattern, Elephant to L., Tree, Fish with four taurines & dots around (x 2). (Rajgor Dilip, Series 26, pp.85-86). Extremely fine, extremely rare.

Located in present day districts of Nasik, Dhule, Jalgaon and Aurangabad of N. Maharashtra; Ashmak finds mention in Mahabharata, Vayu Purana and Asska Jataka, Chulla Kalinga Jataka and Mahagovinda Suttanta etc. It was founded by Ikshavaku dynasty and Mulka was its another name.

k) Panchala, 400-350 BC, Silver Karshapana, 1.81g, single symbol type. Geometrical mark. Very fine, rare (Rajgor Dilip, Series 73, Type 1145, pp.173). Very fine+, extremely rare.

Panchala was a very ancient janapada, finding multiple references in Mahabharata, Jatakas and Divyavadan. Draupadi, the wife of Pandavas was the princess of Panchala and hence, also known as 'Panchali'. It roughly corresponded to modern Budaun, Farrukhabad and the adjoining districts of Uttar

Pradesh. The country was divided into Uttara-Panchala and Dakshina-Panchala. The northern Panchala had its capital at Ahichhatra (modern

Ramnagar in the Bareilly District), while southern Panchala had it capital at Kampilya or Kampil in Farrukhabad District.

l) Kuru/ Pauravas, 450-335 BC, Silver Shatamana or 1½ Shana, 2.00g, two symbols, AB pattern. One of the rarest series having second official symbol, which could be same or different from the main symbol, but always smaller in size (this feature is shared by only the Mallas of Kusinagar and by the Vajjis in some recorded cases: both these people being contemporary to Buddha). (Mitchiner M., Ancient Trade and Early Coinage – Vol.-I, pp.810-813). Very fine+, extremely rare.

The Puranas trace the origin of Kurus from the Puru-Bharata family. Aitareya Brahmana locates the Kurus in Madhyadesha. Their area roughly corresponded to the modern Thanesar, Delhi and Meerut district of U.P.

m) Malla, 550-320 BC, Silver Shatamana or 1½ Shana, 2.00g, Single symbol. Geometric design. (Rajgor Dilip, Series 72, pp.170). Extremely fine, extremely rare.

Mallas were a tribe of Buddha's times, having two branches (capitals at Pava and Kushinara, referred by Panini as 'Mallagramah'); situated to the west of Videha and to northwest of Magadha (modern Deoria and Gorakhpur districts of U.P.). Kusinâra and Pava are very important in the history of Buddhism and Jainism.

n) Shurasena, 400-350 BC, Silver ½ Karshapana, 1.58g, Single symbol. Lion to R. with a flying bird over it. (Rajgor Dilip, Series 76, pp.178). Extremely fine, extremely rare.

The country of the Surasenas lay to the east of Matsya and west of Yamuna. This corresponds roughly to the Brij region of Uttar Pradesh, Haryana and

Rajasthan, and Gwalior region of Madhya Pradesh. It had its capital at Mathura.

o) Avanti, 500-400 BC, Silver ¼ Karshapana, 1.00g, Single Symbol Coin. Geometric design. (Rajgor Dilip, Series 24, pp.80).

It was among the most prominent mahajanapadas of Buddha's times. Located in modern day Malwa, Nimar and adjoining parts in M.P. with capital at

Ujjaini. Profusely reffered in Mahabharata, the Matsya Purana, Majjhima Nikaya and other Buddhist chronicles. Its famous king Pradyota was a contemporary of Bimbisara, Ajatshatru, Prasenjit and the Lord Buddha himself.

p) Matsya, 400-350 BC, Silver Karshapana, weight standard, 3.17g, single symbol type. Geometrical mark. (Sharma Sharad, Numismatic Digest, IIRNS Nasik, Vol.-29-30 (2005-2006). Extremely fine, extremely rare.

The country of the Matsya or Machcha tribe lay to the south of the Kurus and west of the Yamuna, which separated them from the Panchalas. It roughly corresponded to the former state of Jaipur in Rajasthan, and included the whole of Alwar with portions of Bharatpur. The capital of Matsya was at

Viratanagara (modern Bairat) which is said to have been named after its founder king Virata.

The double karshapana weight standard coinage of Vajjis is known and their various varieties listed. However, mashaka weight standard coins, which are even otherwise extremely rare in local PMC series, are known for the first time of the Vajjis, who being the most important republican clan of Buddhist times, are profusely referred in chronicles viz. Mahavagga, Mahaparinibbanasutta, Atthakatha, Kalingar Sutta, Sutra Krutanga, Arthashastra etc. Their

capital was at Vaishali (modern Basarh in the Vaishali District of North Bihar). They lost their independence at the hand of Ajatasatru of Magadha.

3 Punch-marked Coin, Magadha Janapada, 500-450 BC, Silver Vimashatika, weight standard, 4.62g, four Symbol Coin, ABCD pattern. Six-armed symbol, Sun, Bull to L., Lion to L. An extremely important missing link Series '0' coin type, due to its weight linkage (with an earlier heavy weight standard to a later light weight standard coinage). This type belongs to Haryanka dynasty and is roughly contemporary to Buddha (Reference: Rajgor Dilip, Series 10, var. 46, pp.38). Extremely fine, extremely rare.

with noose and lotus). Obv: King without halo to right, bare bodied, bare headed but a crest on his forehead, wearing a waist cloth, earnings, necklace, wristlet etc. Discharging arrow against the lion. Circular Legend

'Narendrachandra' visiable on the coin flan from 1 o'clock. Weight 7.740 gm. In this variety die maker have desired to

show His Majesty as ambidextrous. Rev: Godess Laxmi with halo, a beautiful circular pearl ornament round the head is distinct. Seated facing on lion couchant to left. F. Pridmore in 'The Coins of the British Commonwealth of Nations. Part 4, Volume 1'. Has illustrated the larger token (No. 339. Page 179). He has, however, not elaborated the token but has made reference that in the Malabar Coast quote:-“Factories were on the western coast in the 17th century but the supply of specially minted or individually marked coins for local use,” unquote. (page 139).

The two tokens (the larger one meant for supervisors or maistries and the smaller one for workers) were issued at the end of the shift to the concerned and represent a day's wage. They could be redeemed for currency at any time. However, due to shortage of coinage, they were freely used as 'currency' in the local bazaars as the merchants accepted them since they knew the wage rates. It was more often that the merchants redeemed them with the company than the workers. These tokens were in use during the early part of 1900s.

These tokens are very rare to find. The fact that Pridmore has catalogued them make them unique.
