Well, we seem to be getting through winter at an alarming rate July already and past the

shortest day. Theres no doubt weve had it pretty easy so far lets hope we dont get a

back-log of winter weather from now until summer.

Club activities have been pretty subdued lately, revolving mainly around the monthly

meetings and the new casual monthly runs that now regularly take place on the Sunday

following each months First Tuesday meeting. Dont forget we meet for the Sunday runsat 1.00pm opposite the BP station on the Oval, for an impromptu run to be finalised on the

day, and invariably involving an ice-cream, coffee stop or a pub stop, so feel free to come

along, even if you cant bring a Dubby with you.

One Sunday run which was a little out of the ordinary was the Nobes Navigational Rally a

great fun afternoon involving finding clues and answering questions and, in some cases,

getting properly lost (ahem). The post-event prizegiving at the Mosgiel RSA was a nice

social affair, with Club event newbies The George Family clearing up first prize and snaffling

the silverware, all done from the relative comfort of their Toyota hatchback. Hmm, I think

there ought to be rule about that Anyway, congratulations to them, and many thanks toJohn and Diane Noble for their time and effort in organising the run, and for donating the

prizes! Photos later in this issue.

What most of you wont have noticed, under the surface of the Clubs calm waters, is the

furious paddling being done by the sub-committee members organising the VW Nationals

that we are hosting over Easter next year. More and more details are being confirmed,

booked and announced, and its shaping up to be a cracker of an event. Details later on, but

to get the latest breaking news go to the official NZ VW Nationals website at

    www.vwnationals.co.nz

The sub-committee would like to express their gratitude to the Auckland club who hosted

the 2011 Nationals earlier in the year, and who have been a huge help in handing over the

reins to us, and giving some much appreciated help and advice. Thanks in particular to

    Terry Sawyer for his assistance.

    THE ALL NEW, NEW BEETLE

The new 2012 Beetle has been shown at both Shanghai and New York and is turning heads with a

break in its arguably familiar pedestrian disposition.

The new Beetle will come in standard and a new performance guise, the latter packing the new

261HP 2.0 litre inline four-cylinder turbo from the Sirocco R, with a rumoured 337HP inline five-

cylinder turbo called the W28 slated for 2014.

    Standard engines include a 2.5-litre five-cylinder oil burner, 2.0-litre TDI diesel, and a 200-hp 2.0-

    litre TFSI.

    What an improvement!

Dunedin, July 10th 2011 - Not content to sit back and relax after a full-on Beetle

restoration project, a certain local 6-Volt enthusiast has recently finished a painstakingly

thorough from-scratch build of a 1600cc single port vintage speed motor to give his

Beetle a bit more go to add to its show. Fed by single choke Webers and with a mild

street cam and vintage style stainless exhaust system, I can confirm that a successful fire-

up took place this very weekend. Wishing to remain anonymous in case of an embarrassingfirst-start-up catastrophe, I can confirm that this fledgling VeeDub engine builder is well

chuffed with the result. Details of this impressively engineered build to follow next time.

    VWs RAID ON RALLY

Volkswagen plans to run three factory Polo R WRCs when it enters the World Rally

Championship in 2013, according to UK publication Autosport.

The German manufacturer confirmed its WRC entry at a press conference prior to Rally

    d'Italia Sardegna last week.

Volkswagen Motorsport director Kris Nissen said: At the moment we do not have a

driver line-up. There is no reason to hurry because we are at a very early stage of our

rally commitment. We are taking the time to carefully look at the market.

"It would be great if we had a new Walter Rhrl in Germany. While that would no doubt

be helpful to us and to the WRC the drivers skills are more important to us than their

nationalities. In this area we will no doubt be taking a decision within the next 20

months as well - we will run three cars in the WRC.

The Polo R WRC will begin testing later this year and VW-contracted drivers

will compete in Skoda Fabia S2000s during this season's WRC. Nasser Al-Attiyah is

already confirmed to complete his S-WRC campaign in one of the Czech machines

    from Rally Finland onwards.
