• In Othello by WS the central relationship between the eponymous hero and his wife Desdemona transforms completely. Their relationship is initially characterised by love and affection but Othello’s overpowering jealousy means it is destroyed by hatred and violence.
• The audience initially sees the strength of the couple’s love when they must defend their marriage before the Duke.
• Iago’s exploitation of Othello’s jealous nature completely transforms the nature of the relationship in the turning point of the play: Act 3 Scene 3.
• Shakespeare shows how jealousy has led to the marriage being ruined by suspicion and violence.
• “I had rather be a toad… and live upon the vapours of a dungeon”• In the climax the audience feels sympathy for the main characters
because Othello reminds us of their love.• So, the audience is affected by the tragic destruction of a
caring relationship which offered Othello freedom and happiness.
