MESSAGE FROM LITTLE SIR: Kevin Mahoney: (916)835-7855

The primary concern for the Branch membership this month is voting on where to hold our monthly luncheons in 2018: Timber Creek Ballroom at Sun City Roseville or Catta Verdera Country Club. The BEC took several weeks to carefully evaluate the best available location for Branch 98 to hold their luncheons. We determined that Timber Creek Ball-room (TBC) is the preferred venue for the following reasons: Location – TBC is closer for 2/3 of our membership

TCB has a larger and more convenient parking lot than Catta Verdera TCB has a covered drop off and large Atrium for payment, badge pick-up,

and activities and book exchange tables (important during inclement weather) – Catta Verdera has neither

TCB provides better facilities for branch operations Food quality and table services are comparable at both locations TCB’s Luncheon price is fixed through June 2108

It’s now up to the Membership to vote to approve the BEC’s recommendation to stay at TCB or vote to move to Catta Verdera . Each of you will receive an email from Survey Monkey inviting you to vote: “SIR's BRANCH 98 MEMBERS, IT’S TIME TO VOTE” Please respond to the survey as soon as you can. In other news: The Branch’s RAMP Committee is in full gear. Our Activities Chairman Brien Hensley is doing FANTASTIC job organizing and coordinating multiple opportunities for our members. And Steve Quiggle (Membership & Retention) is on a roll formulating a program to inte-grate out new members into the fold. Much more will follow about Ken Hansen (Recruiting) and Charlie Wells (Publicity) plans. Last: at the September luncheon I misspoke when I stated that the median age of our

membership is 78; the median age is actually 75.

MESSAGE FROM BIG SIR: Bob Gilson (916) 543-0447

I hope everyone experienced an enjoyable summer with family and friends. We are now officially in the Fall season where temperatures are more moderate and there are hopes for a good rainy season. During the October lunch we will be swearing in the 2018 Branch Executive Committee Officers and Directors. Additionally, we should have the results of the vote for the lunch lo-cation, Little SIR Kevin Mahoney with share those results with everyone.

We continue to add activities available to members of our Branch. Ken Hansen is staring a couples dine-out group where he is negotiating a three course meal at a special price or attendees are free to order from the menu. Member Status for September 2017 In September we inducted 3 new members bringing our total membership 276. According to our MSR (membership status report) for September, we have a total of 262 active members and inactive members. That includes 14 inactive members and 4 active which resigned, deceased or were terminated. We need to step up the recruiting for the rest of the year if we want to reach our goal.

Bob Fricke is The 2016 Winner of the Les Olsen Memorial

For the October 11th Branch 98 luncheon you will have the option to prepay your lunch and not stand in line before heading into our meeting room and/or the bar. This is being implemented on a trial basis and we hope to expand this program later when our new website is fully implemented. Use this streamlined process to enjoy more time socializing with friends and an extra beverage at the bar. Here is how it works: 1. Mail your check for $24 to our Assistant Treasurer (Steve Quiggle) no later than Friday, October 6

th. Make payable to SIR BRANCH 98

Mail check to: Steve Quiggle 3461 Black Oak Drive.

Rocklin, CA 95765 2. Go to the Express table outside our meeting room and pick up your badge, meal and raffle tickets and you are all set to go! 3. Payments received after October 7

th will be held at the normal check in line and you will wait

your turn as you would normally do. A list of prepaid members will be posted outside the Meeting room for you to verify that your payment was received so you can move on to the Express Lane. If you are not on the prepaid list, please go to the normal line. 4. Special vegetarian meal requests must be noted with your advance payment or you will dining on the normal menu. (see page #1 for selection) Free lunch drawing from the participants in each month’s prepaid program. Winner in Septem-ber was Hank Starr. Don’t miss your chance for a free meal!!!!!!!!! Note: If members prepay and don't notify us of non-attendance prior to the payment due date, as a result of a change in plans, their payments will be forfeited. If Steve receives advanced notice by the deadline, he will roll your payment into the following month. Logic: we don't want prepayments screwing up our headcount any more than it already is and we are matching payments to meeting attendance so don't deposit checks until the month of the lunch- matching revenue with the lunch bill.

We had a great turn out for our lunch at Islands restaurant in Roseville. Everyone felt that the staff (especially Mandi) were great, the food menu had a nice variety and done well. One of the only complaints was that the milk shakes did not use real ice cream. Everyone said that they would recom-mend Islands to family and friends and come back again. The rating was a 4.25 out of 5 second only to MooMoo’s. Our next months outing is at Skipolini’s in Rocklin October 24 at 11:30. They are located by the Blue Oaks Theater at 6600 Lonetree Blvd. Please RSVP to me or just show up. [email protected] (916) 813-0798

Financial Group 2 Continues to Grow

The 4th meeting of Finance/Investment Group 2 was held on August 29. Art Mallo hosted. Bob Wikse opened with a “masterful” presentation on measures of risk in a well-designed investment portfolio. In little more than an hour, “Professor” Wikse covered a full semester of information on Security Volatility and Modern Portfolio Theory (MPT). As timely follow ups, Tom Whalen and Art Mallo introduced investments to the group for analysis under the risk/reward measures discussed above. This segued perfectly into our 5

    th and most recent meeting

hosted on Tuesday, 9/19 by Bob Wikse. We welcomed Bob Sav-age and Paul McKenna as new members and benefited from their honest and knowledgeable critiques of individual fantasy portfolios developed and presented around the table by each earlier mem-ber. In a year’s long competition, every member – new, old or fu-ture - will build an individual $100,000 fantasy portfolio to go head to head in a fun and friendly manner to determine the winning per-formance. And during the year, the best performing investments from each member’s portfolio will be voted on to make up a Group fantasy portfolio, open to all outside competition. Let the fun begin! • ...I set the glasses back down on the counter, filled a container with water and suddenly I spot the TV remote someone left it on the kitchen table, I realize that tonight when we go to watch TV, I'll be looking for the remote, but I won't remember that it's on the kitchen table, so I decide to put it back in the den where it belongs, but first I'll water the flowers. I pour some water on the flowers, but quite a bit spills on the floor. So, I set the remote back on the table, get some towels and wipe up the spill. Then, I head down the hall trying to remember what I was planning to do. At the end of the day: the car isn't washed, the bills aren't paid, there is a warm can of Pepsi sitting on the counter the flowers don't have enough water, there is still only one check in my check book, O can't find the remote, I can't find my glasses, and I don't remember what I did with the car keys. Then, when I try to figure out why nothing got done today, I'm really baffled because I know I was busy all day, and I'm really tired. I realize this is a serious problem, and I'll try to get some help for it, but first I'll check my e-mail. Don’t laugh-if this isn't you yet, your day is coming! (Personally...I have arrived.) GUARD YOUR DIGITS

‘Social’ Smarts will help Protect Your Identity

By obtaining your Social Security number, identity thiefs have the easiest path to do the greatest damage: stealing your money, and government benefits. Getting medical services and other services in your name leaving you a real mess to clean up. In 2016 when 15 million people were victimized, 400 new number were issues says the Social Security Administration. So your best defense is to protect those 9 digits. Here is how. 1) LEAVE IT HOME. Never carry your Social Security card

with you. What if your wallet was stolen. The same goes for your Medicare Card which has your Social Security Number.

    2) WHEN ASK DON’T TELL. Only a few organizations have a legal right to your Social Security Number. Your employer, banks, and lenders. Also investment funds, the IRS, & gov-ernment-funded programs.

    3) GUARD THE FINAL FOUR. Although the most widely shared, the last 4 digits are in fact the most important to pro-tect. These are truly random numbers where as the first 5 numbers represent when and where your SS# was issued. Scammers can get these by knowing your birth date and hometown. So DON’T use those last 4 digits as a pin.

    4) Freeze ‘EM OUT. Even if a thief gets your ID information, if you put a freeze on your file they can’t use the information. Contact Equifax (800) 349-9960, Experian (888) 397-3742 & TransUnion (888) 909-8872. Freezes can be thawed as need by you.

    5) REPORT QUICKLY. If your number is used for ID theft, contact the FTC (877) 438-4338. File a police report and notify credit reporting bureaus and banks. Report Medicare fraud at (800) 447-8477 & call the IRS at (800) 772-1213

  • It is never too late to renovate

    By Jerry Foster

As we get older most of us are through moving in most cas-es, however, our home is not suiting our needs and it gets frustrating some times. We have a tendency to acquire more items or need more space due to our physical capabilities. Although there may be homes out there that have what we want or need, we should not take on more debt at our age. So make a wish list, prioritize, and budget the project. In a lot of projects, you maybe able to do some of the renovation pro-ject yourself. Myself, I have done all of the projects listed be-low and it has made a big difference in our quality and ease of life. Make a plan. Older eyes need better lighting so what ever your project include new lighting. Use LED lights where pos-sible. LED lights are more efficient and give you longer last-ing lights and they come in a large variety of configurations. Some of the most popular reno projects include: Kitchen renovation. Cost $20K—$50K This usually include New lighting New counter Tops Replacing or refinishing cabinets. New flooring Paint New more efficient appliances Bathroom Upgrade. $15K—$30K This can include Removing old fixtures, tile & faucets Relocate plumbing Choose the correct tub, shower, toilet, and sink. Think ahead and make the fixtures ADA compliant. Even though you may not need this today, as we get older we could need wheel chair accessibility. When you need it, you may not have time to make the improvement. Lighting Upgrade. With the new types of lights it is great To install NEW recessed lights in the Family Room, Kitchen, Living Room and Garage. Recessed LED light cost about $100 ea. installed (by an electrician), 4 foot Garage lights cost $45—$60 ea. plus installation. Laundry Room update. With all of the new appliances, it Is best to change your washer and dryer to a more up-to -date model. You will save money and your laundry will probably last longer. Cost will very a lot depending upon the appliance, flooring and finishes you choose $5K-$7K. Landscape Update. With the water restrictions we have just gone through and our ability to do the gardening most of us need to change our yards. One of the most pop ular is to install a drip system and that way you only put the water where it is needed and there are NO watering restrictions for drip systems. Another popular project is to install raised flower beds therefore no more getting down on our knees to garden.
