Gosford Times 10

th September 1915

Narara to Cairo Private Austin O’Toole, son of Mr and Mrs J. O’Toole, of Narara, who

recently sailed for the Dardanelles, has written home from the Red

Sea, to say that all’s well. During the voyage, a number of flying fish,

porpoises and whales were sighted, but they had a run of three

weeks before seeing land. Two British, destroyers were passed, and

the transport was stopped by a French cruiser. The soldiers’ mas-

cot, a wallaby, was lost overboard a week after leaving Melbourne,

and a strange thing about it, remarks Austrin, was that two jack-

asses, that had remained as solemn as owls ever since leaving Syd-

ney broke out in loud laughter as they saw the wallaby go over the

side of the vessel. A postscript adds that the transport had reached

Port Suez, nd the soldiers immediately entrained for Cairo. The lat-

ter he describes as a beautiful city with better buildings than Sydney.

The weather was fearfully hot, yet the troops were in excellent spirits,

and were looking forward to the hour when they would be sent to the

front.

Gosford Times 22

nd October 1915

Mr J. O’Toole of Narara, on Wednesday received a wire from the

military authorities stating that his son, Private A.S. O’Toole, had

contracted sickness and disembarked at Malta on 18th September

from the hospital ship Dunhuche Castle.

Gosford Times 19

th November 1915

A PROUD RECORD. Mr J. O’Toole, of Narara, has received word, from the military authori-

ties that his son, Private A.S. O’toole, is now in one of the hospitals in

London suffering from dysentery. Mr O’Toole has two sons at the front

Austin and Lloyd. A third son, Cecil, is now in camp, and the fourth

boy, Percy, would also have been wearing khaki but that he developed

ptomaine poisoning while in camp, and had to return home. Four sons

in a family of six volunteer to serve King and country is a record that

should make any parent proud.

Gosford Times 10

th May 1917

O’TOOLE – In loving memory of our dear son and brother, Private Austin O’Toole, died of wounds in France, 12

th May, 1916.

Immaculate Heart of Mary your prayers for him extol, Oh Sacred Heart of Jesus, have mercy on his soul.
