Megger’sOTS80PB/60PBOilTestSetsareportableliquiddielectricbreakdowntesters.Theyarefullyauto-matic,poweredbybattery/mainsandfacilitateaccuratebreakdownvoltagetestsonmineral,esterandsiliconinsulatingoils.Usedonsiteaswellasinthelaboratory,theprecisiontestvesselsetstheaccuracystandardfortheliquidinsulationtestindustry.Foreaseofusetheinstrumentscomespre-programmedwitha‘library’ofinternationalbreakdownteststandardsandtheabilitytocreatecustomtests.

TheOTS60PBweighslessthan17kgandtheOTS80PB21.5kgto23.5kgdependingonbatterychoice.Itcomescompletewithoptionalcarrybagandoptionalimpactresistanttransportcase.Thetransportcaseprovidesspacefortheunit,vesselandelectrodeset.

Theinstrumentishousedinametalcasewithmouldedendcapsthataccommodateconvenientcarryhandles.Thetestchamberisdesignedwithaneasy-cleansurfaceandprovidesadrainforspiltoilthroughaninternalpiperoutedtotherearoftheinstrument.Abeakerorsimilarcanbeusedforspillagecollection.Thetestareaiscoveredbyaplasticlidwithanelectricallyprotectiveinnerconductivelayerwhich,withthemetalcase,providesasafeequipotentialenclosureforhighvoltagetesting.

Thelidallowsinplentyofambientlightandusersareabletoviewthetestandwitnessstirringandthebreakdown.Thechamberlidisdualredundantsafetyprotectedwithmicro-switchestopreventaccidentalelectrification.

Theadvancedtestvesseldesignyieldshighlyaccurateandrepeatableresultspreviouslyonlyproducedbylaboratoryinstruments.Twostirringoptionsareavailable;aninternalmagneticbeanstirrerwhichisdroppedintotheoilandanoptionallidmountedimpellerthatconformstotheASTMD1816standard.Stirringduringbreakdowntestingisemployedtoproduceanhomogeneousdistributionofcontaminantswithintheoilandtofreeanycarbongeneratedbetweenelectrodesduringtesting.

Electrodegapissetbyprecisionadjustmentwheelsthatlockinpositionensuringthattheelectrodesdonotmoveduringabusydayinthefield.Itis,however,advisabletochecktheelectrodeconditionandgapdailybecauseitisacriticalparameterinbreakdownvoltagetesting.FlatanodisedAluminiumgapsettinggaugesaresuppliedinpopularsizestofacilitateelectrodegapsetting.Electrodesaredetachableandareavailableinshapesthatmeetallinternationalstandards,i.e.disk,sphericalandmushroom(VDE)electrodes.

TheOTS80PBislinepoweredwiththeoptionofinternalbatteries(eitherLeadAcid,NiMHornobattery)buttheOTS60PBonlyoffersNiMHbatteryornobatteryoption.Inadditiontolinepowercharging,a12VDCchargerfacilityisfactoryfittedwitheitherbatteryoption.Avehicle12VDCchargercableisprovidedtochargetheinstrument’sbatteries.Customerswhoorderoneofthebatterypackoptionsshouldbemindfuloftheneedtomaintainbatterycapacity.Asaminimum,leadacidbatteriesshouldbefullychargedevery3months.CustomerswhochosetheNiMHbatteryoptionareadvisedtooperatefrombatterywithoutlinepowerperiodicallytoensuremaximumbatterylife.

AselectionofinternationalbreakdowntestsarechosenfromalibraryofstandardsequencesandstartedfromtheuserfriendlymenuontheLCDdisplay.Thetopleveltestscreendisplaysallpertinenttestinformationtoensurethecorrectelectrodesareusedwiththespecifiedelectrodegapsetting.

ResultsareviewedonscreenandprintedoneitheranexternalUSBprinterortheinternalprinterfollowingatestresult.Intheeventofabreakdownnotoccurringbeforereachingthemaximumvoltage,theinstrumentwillreturnmaximumvoltage.Thisisasafetymeasuretoensuretheinstrumentisnotdrivenoveritsdesignedmaximumvoltage.

Theinstrumentautomaticallyturnsoffthedisplay15minutesaftercompletionofatestsequenceorlastuse.

Safetyfeaturesincorporatedinthedesignincludedualsafetymicro-switchesandzerovolttouchbar,thescreenedchamberlidandconvienentpowersupplyOn/Offswitch.Pressinganybuttonduringatestwillimmediatelyremovethehighvoltageandterminatethetest.Itisimportanttoearththisinstrumentusingthegroundconnectionattherearoftheinstrumenttoensuresafeoperation.

Itismandatoryforsafeoperationthatanearthgroundcableisattachedtothisinstrumentbeforeperformingtests.Thegroundconnectionisidentifiedasitem1intheillustration.Attentionmustbepaidtoproductwarningsandmarkings.

LinepowerisappliedviaanIECsocket(2)andisfused(3).Theinternalbatteries,ifsupplied,canbechargedbyajacktypesocket(6)fromavehicleorcorrectlyratedwallplugtransformer.Ifbatteriesareorderedwiththisproductachargerandvehiclechargingcableissupplied.Notethattheinstrumentisnotdesignedtooperatefrom12VDC,onlytochargethebatteries.

ApplicationsTheOTS80PB/60PBisusedfordeterminingthedielectricstrengthofhighvoltageinsulatingliquids,suchastheinsulatingoilsusedintransformers,switchgearandotherelectricalapparatus.Thedielectricbreakdownvoltageisameasureoftheinsulatingabilityofaliquidtowithstandelectricalstress.Contaminantssuchascellulosicfibres,conductingparticles,dirt,andwaterreducebreakdownvoltageofaninsulatingliquid.Alowresultindicatesthepresenceofoneormoreofthesecontaminants.

Thetestsetisfullyautomatic.Theoperatorhassimplytopreparethetestvessel,loaditwithsampleoil,placeitinthetestchamber,selecttheappropriatespecificationforthetestsandthenstartthetestsequence.Thetestsetautomaticallycarriesoutthesequenceoftestsasdefinedbythepre-selectednationalspecifications.Oiltestingspecifications,forwhichthesetsarepre-programmed,areasfollows:

Supply voltageBeforeconnectinglinepowertotheinstrumentthegroundconnectorshouldbeconnectedtoasuitableearthpoint.

TheOTS80PB/60PBisdesignedtooperateon50/60HzAClinepowerintherange90to265VAC.A12VDCpowercircuitforbatterychargingisfittedwheneitherNiMHorleadacidbatterypacksareordered.Thebatterycanbeeitherchargedusingthesupply12Vvehiclechargercableorfrommainspower.

Assembly

n Unpackinstrumentandcontentsofthepackingbox.

n Ensurethattheinstrumentisplacedonasolidsurfaceortablewithsufficientworkingspace.

AVCM100Dvoltagecheckdevicecanbeusedtoconfirmtheoutputvoltageoftheinstrumentbyreadingthevoltagedirectlyattheelectrodebeforerunningtests.PeriodiccheckingofactualtestvoltageusingtheVCM100Disrecommended.ThevoltagechecktestisaccessedfromtheToolstabwindow.

Test vessel motorised stirrer Unpacktheoptionalmotorisedstirrerassemblyfromitsboxandfitthestirrershafttotheundersideofthestirrerassembly.Theunitisreadyforuse.Theoiltestvessellidisremovedandthestirrerassemblyusedasalidforteststhatrequirestirring.

Whennotinusecareshouldbetakentostorethestirrershaftandstirrerlidassemblyinthecarrybagprovidedwiththeinstrument.

Navigation and Character EntryThekeypadconsistsofarrowkeyssurroundingan‘OK’buttonusedfornavigatingthescreensandselectingfunctionsandoptions.Thesesixbuttonsfullycontroltheinstrument.

Withineachuserinterfacewindowtheupanddownarrowbuttonsareusedtonavigateupanddownthefunctionslistedontheleftsideofthescreen.The‘OK’keyeitherscrollsthroughoptionsassociatedwitheachfunctionorentersalowerlevelwindowtoperformafunction.

Leftandrightarrowbuttonsnavigatebetweentabsonthetoplevelwindowforoptimumspeed.Individualtabwindowssavethehighlightfunctionandreturntothesamepositiononeachscreen.

Userscannavigateintolowerlevelwindowsusingtheup/downarrowbuttonsandthe‘OK’buttontoreach,forexample,the‘DisplaySetup’function.Pressingthe‘OK’buttonbringsupawindowthatenablesthebrightnesstobeadjusted.Thefollowingimagesillustratethisfunctionality.

Theusernavigatesto‘DisplaySetup’andpresses‘OK’togettothedisplaysetupwindow.Theup/downortheleft/rightbuttonsadjustbrightnesswithabarindicatorshowingbrightnesspercentage.The‘OK’buttonisusedtosetbrightnessafteradjustmentandsubsequentreturntothesettingswindow.

Numericentryisviaavirtualkeypadasshowntotheright.Digitentryisthesameasthefullvirtualkeypadwithakeypad‘OK’activatingareturntopreviouswindow.

Making a breakdown testSelectthe‘Home’tabwindowusingthearrowkeysand‘OK’button.Thiswindowoffersasummaryofinformationrequiredforameasurement.Thefollowingimageshowsatypicalsetupwiththeselectedstandardtest,thetestidenti-ficationorassetIDcomprisedofanassetnumberandtwodigitserialnumber,thetypeofoil,requiredelectrodegap,electrodeshapeandfinallythestirrer.

Whentheuserselectsaparticularstandardonlyvalidoptionsarepresentedwithrespecttogapsetting,electrodesandstirreroptions.

Navigationissimple;upanddownarrowbuttonsmoveupanddowntheleftsideofthewindowwhilstoptionsforeachlinecanbescrolledthroughusingthe‘OK’key,orinformationenteredinthecaseofTestID.

Test in progressDuringatestthescreenflashesredwarningHVsymbolstoremindtheuserthatahighvoltagetestisinprogress.Asasafetymeasure,anykeypresswillimmediatelyhaltthetest.

Theelectrodepotentialdifferenceisdisplayedasitrampsupinover-sizeddigitstoemphasisethepresenceofhighvoltage.

Betweenteststhereisadwelltimeandpossiblyastirringaction.Acountdowntimerindicatesperiodofdwellorstirringremaining.

Test resultsAttheendofanytestresultsareshownonthescreen.AtypicalexampleistheIEC60156test.Thisimageshowsthecompleteinformationpresentedtotheuserhoweverthescreensizeisnaturallysmallersoasliderfunctionenablestheusertonavigatethroughtheresultandprintitifrequired.

ThetestresultforIEC60156containsresultsofsixsequentialbreakdowntestswithteststatisticsofaveragebreakdownvoltage,datadispersionandstandarddeviation.

Theresultswindowfacilitatesadirectprintfunctionatthebottomoftheresultwindow.

Managing test standards

Customtestsareteststhatcanbedefinedbyauserbygivingtheusercontrolovertherangeofparameterssetinatest.Twocustomtestshavebeenpre-programmedforuserdefinition;

NavigatetotheToolstoplevelscreenasillustratedbelow.Select,“ManageTestStandards”bypressingtheOKbutton.Godownto,“EditCustomTestParameters”andpresstheOKbutton.Thecustomparametersscreenshowsasetofvariablesthatcontrolabreakdowntest.Eachvariableisusersettable,simplynavigatedowntotherequiredsetting,presstheOKbuttonandproceedtochangethevalueasrequired.FornumericentryontheOTSAFmodelsthedecimalpointcanbeenteredbyquicklypressingthedigit‘1’twice.Sotoenter2.5mmgapsettingtheuserentersthefollowingsequence:

Print quality and changing paperTheprintercoverisremovedbyturningthetwofastenersthroughaquarterturnandpullingthepaneloff.

Theprinterribbonmayneedtobemovedontoimproveprintquality.Todothis,removetheprintercoverandturntherighthandrotarywinderindirectionindicatedontheribboncase.Tochangetheprinterribbon,simplypresstheribbonassemblywhereitsays,“PUSHEJECT,”toremovetheoldribbonandreplacewithanewone.ThepartisanEpsonERC-09,Meggerpartnumber25995-002.

Paperisfedintothehousingwiththelosepaperfacingtherearoftheinstrument.Ensurethatthepaperisneatlycutandnotcurledupattheend.

Holdingtheendofthepaperroll,insertthepaperunderthecrossbarandintotheprinterslotasshown(bluearrows)inthedrawingopposite.Presstheprintfeedkeyrepeatedlyuntilthepaperisjustvisiblefeedingthroughtheprintmechanism.

Replacetheprinterfrontcoverbyfirstlocatingitatthebaseofthepanelandsecureitwiththefastenerswhichareturnedbackaquarterturntosecurethepanelinplace.Finallypressthepaperfeedbuttontoadvancethepaperthroughthefrontcoverpaperslot.

Vessel and ElectrodesTheoiltestvesselandelectrodesrequirenomaintenanceotherthancleaning.Electrodescanbeunscrewedandreplacedwithanothershapeelectrode.Electrodesshouldbeexaminedregularlytoensurenopittinghasoccurredandtheelectrodesrenewedwherepittingisevident.

Theinstrumentincludesabuiltinelectrodecleaningfunctionwhichcanbeactivatedfromthetoolsmenu.Thisfunctionwillperform24sequentialbreakdownstoremovedepositsonelectrodesurfaces.

VCM100DTheVCM100DisnotauserserviceableitembutmayrequireperiodiccleaningusingacleanclothdampenedwithIsopropylAlcohol(IPA).

Test vessel motorised stirrerMegger’smotorisedstirrerisintegratedintoamodifiedlidassemblyandsimplyreplacesthevessellid.Powerisconnectedviaaflushmountedrearinsertandisdisconnectedasthestirrerassemblyislifted.Thisunitisnotuserserviceable.

GeneralTheOTS80PB/60PBisaHVinstrumentgeneratingupto80kVandisnotuserserviceable.Theusershouldensurethatthelidisnotcrackedordistortedbeforeuse.Theonlyinternalpartoftheinstrumentthatisaccessibletotheuseristheprinterpaperhousingallowingrenewalofpaperandribbonwhenrequired.OpeningtheOTS80PB/60PBisstrictlyforbiddenandwillconstituteabreachofwarrantee.Thereisnoneedforanytoolstobeusedwiththisinstrumentotherthanthesuppliedgaugesandmagneticbeanretriever.

CleaningTocleantheoutersurfacesoftheOTS80PB/60PB,firstdisconnectfromlinepowerandthenwipetheinstrumentusingacleanclothdampenedwithIsopropylAlcohol(IPA).

Theusermustensurethatthetestchamberisalwayskeptclean,particularlypriortoatest.Wipeawayanyspiltoilinthechamberorontheoutsideofthetestvesselwithalintfreecloth.

Tocleantheinsideofthetestvesselfollowtheinstructionsgivenintherelevanttestspecificationor,inthecaseofnoinstructions,cleanedwithasmallvolumeofthenextsampleofoiltobemeasured.

Whenalotofoilisspiltinthetestchambertheunitisdesignedwithadrainfacilityattherear.Simplyunclipthecleartubeanddrainoilintoabeakerorothersuitablecontainer.
