CFS Masset celebrates its 74th anniversary as a military station. Canadian Forces Station (CFS) Masset celebrated its 74th anniversary as a Canadian Armed Forces military station on 23 February 2017. The station is part of Canadian Forces Information Operations Group and its motto is SINE DUBIO SINE MORA – Without Doubt or Delay. CFS Masset (Old spelling Massett), started out as a Naval Wireless Station, call sign CZT, in the fall of 1942, at what is now called the “Old Site”, located about 3.2 km (2 miles) east of the village of Masset. The unit operated as a relay station for ship-to-shore communications, being a satellite to Montreal Circle in Prince Rupert. On 23 February 1943, the Navy officially opened Naval Radio Station (NRS) Masset. The original complement of eight (8) Royal Canadian Navy (RCN) personnel arrived on February 23, 1943 and the station went on the air four days later.

In 1945 after the war the station was closed and placed in caretaker status until 1949 when the site was reactivated. In 1966, a two-month Signals Intelligence collection trial between Vancouver Wireless station (VWS Ladner) and Masset was conducted which identified approximately 80 percent more usable material collected at Masset than VWS. As a result from 1967 to 1972, many of the facilities of Canadian Forces Station Masset were constructed. The survey for the PMQ’s and antenna farm sites was carried out in 1967 with work on the operations site beginning in 1968. The new Ops site was completed on 15 December 1969 and officially opened on 13 February 1970. CFS Masset operated until February 1997, when it was converted to remote operations and officially stood down on Apr 4, 1997. It was re-established as CFS Leitrim Detachment Masset. Since then, almost all the facilities have been turned over to the village of Masset and most PMQs sold privately. At one time, CFS Masset employed more than 300 military and civilian personnel, about 130 of these were communicator Research Operators. The remote operation continues to employees about 30 Military personnel, none of which are Comm Rsch.

Special thanks for this information goes to Robert Wortman and George Fraser who accumulated and published this information in the “History of Canadian Signals Intelligence & Direction Finding”
